John Goering Mr. john Goering walks a precarious path in the diffe re nt channels of the high school. Kee ping his eye fixed on the goals of a well balanced high schoolprogram, he must hear and weigh honestly the ideas, problems, and com- plaints that originate from the students and the faculty. ' In the academic program of the high school Mr. Goering must uphold the quality of excel- lence. He is sensitive to the needs ofa growing and straining school, yet its pressures always leave him calmly collected. ' Mr. joe Rich Director ofActivities, Mr. joe Rich, brings a new perspective to McPherson High School for it was only afew years ago that he was a mem- ber ofthe faculty. He puts himself into the school and this effort will neverbe erased. By doing so, he has won the respect and admiration of the faculty as well as the students. ADMINISTRA T10 admimktmtors MR. S CH OLAR HIP WINNERS is title awarded tlziryz seniors EPI TAPH: 165-66 In the outside world, it was the year when The se Boo ts walked all ove r the Green Berets, and Lightning struck Michelle. It was the year the Hell's Angels swept the country and the surfer ' s cross became the national emblem. It was the year the Swim went out and the Monkey came in. Skirts became s ho rte r and boys' glance s became longer. The Mommas and Poppas, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and Paul Revere and the Raiders were all in, and the Everly Brothers were out. But over all, Batman reigned supreme. It was the year the U.S . laid a bomb in the Mediterranean and sent Gemini 6, 7, 8, and 9 into orbit. The Los Angeles Do dge r s won the World Series, and the Braves hopped merrily from M i lwa uke e to Atlanta, and maybe back again. It was the year President Johnson marked his second a nn ive r s a ry in office, and Barry Goldwater marked his first full year back at the department store. At MHS, it was the year the football Pups were picked Team of the Week and were never heard from again. It was also the year the basketball Pups s u rp r i s e d a lot of people by being heard from p le nty during the entire season. It was the year when the senior boys did their homewo rk with a map of Viet Nam somewhere in the room--just as a reminder of what happens to those who don't study. It was the year when the junior-Senior Prom became a glorified engagement party. David Stagg stunned the world by making his announcement that he wasn't going to K -State after all. lt was the year M'Liss sang The Sound of Music by The Babbling Brooks. The de- baters won ten trophies, and the tennis squad hasn't stopped winning yet. Ju dy Pe l tz m a n, Sydney Miller, Patsy Melland, Linda Jones, and Louise Krom all played Queen for aDay. It was the year the MHS student body finally got Mr. F inton down, and drove him back to Okla- homa. Skate-boarding was a passing fad, but beaver-shooting remained the main pastime. MHS moved to Kanopolis Senior Skip Day while the juniors slaved on Prom decorations in the gym. It was the year J.B's replaced the Men, and Mrs. Matson broke her own record by wasting a total of four minutes, two and two- tenths seconds of class time during the school year. Yes, it was quite a year. The seniors are leaving, and a new crop of s ophomo re s will soon be filing in to write new pages in MHS history. The Class of '66 is now history. Speaking of leaders, class officers were: Bob Grif- fith, presidentg Dick Thompson, Vice- presidentg Vickie K a is e r , secretaryg Dana Sammers, treasurer. Uniting together, the first major ac- complishment of the year was the class play. Exciting was the arrival of class rings, but the big momentwas the junior- Senior banquet and prom, held for the first time in the Roundhouse of the school. AFETT CL B promotes sajigfg plans jor consolidation Safety Club once again tried to promote the interests of vehicular safety in and around the town of McPherson. Early in the year, the club held a car -window wash on Main Street to en- courage community interest. Duringthewinter months, milk cartons were filled with sand and distributed to filling stations within the city. The filling stations in turn dispersed these to drivers who could use the contents in case they got stuck in the snow. These, and other projects the club carried out, helped to encourage safety in the school and in the community. Through the club efforts, the community became more aware of the importance traffic safety plays in their lives. Next year, Stu-Co and Safety Club will consolidate to form an organization designed to promote safety and represent the student body at the same time. School service and safety practices will continue to be the major princi- ples of Safety Club after this combination of two worthy and competent organizations .
