A native of Wharton, Tex., Rivera has been around baseball all his life and has come to believe that the best teams are those that play a sound defense and utilize speed on offense. “You've got to be strong up the middle on defense and then be willing to utilize your speed on offense,” he said. “Here in the Southland Conference you've also got to have good pitching depth. Year in and year out, you'll find that teams with the better pitching staffs will either win or be in the top two when it comes time to settling the conference championship.”

Cowgirl Softball The McNeese Cowgirl Softball team, under the direction of coach Jim Draudt, ended its 1982 season with a 26-15 overall record. Many records were broken by the Cowgirls this season, six of which were career records for Cherilyn Lantrip. Lantrip batted .313 for the Cowgirls and assumed the career lead in runs scored (113), hits (134), doubles (16), home runs (12), stolen bases (55) and runs batted in (75). There were five other records turned by the Cowgirls during the season. Jan O’Friel, the team’s leading batter with a .316 average, set a single season record for runs batted in with 29 while Pam Mayet set a mark for triples as she belted 8. In the career pitching statistics, Laura Grifka recorded her 39th victory and 130th strikeout. This season the Cowgirls compiled one of the best records in the state.
