A native of Wharton, Tex., Rivera has been around baseball all his life and has come to believe that the best teams are those that play a sound defense and utilize speed on offense. “You've got to be strong up the middle on defense and then be willing to utilize your speed on offense,” he said. “Here in the Southland Conference you've also got to have good pitching depth. Year in and year out, you'll find that teams with the better pitching staffs will either win or be in the top two when it comes time to settling the conference championship.”

He is a 1976 graduate of McNeese and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree. Simon was the McNeese MVP in 1975 when he batted .366 and was named to the all-Southland Conference team as an infielder.
