CONFERENCE TEAM INCLUDES DUMARS, AND CHAFFOULD McNeese State’s Joe Dumars and Fred Chaffould were named to the all-Southland Conference basketball team for the 1981-82 season. Dumars and Chaffould were among the five members selected to this year’s team. The others were Ralph McPherson and Albert Culton of Texas-Arlington and Alford Turner of Southwestern Louisiana. Dumars, who led the league in scoring with an 18.1 average, is a native of Natchitoches and a freshman. Chaffould, who led the SLC in re- bounding with an 11.4 average, is a junior from Monroe. COWBOYS DOWN LA. TECH (78-77) The McNeese Cowboys advanced to the semi- finals of the SLC tournament by virtue of defeating La. Tech 78-77. It took three overtimes and some hardnose defense by Chris Faggi but they did finally pull it out. The Pokes came out like a bullet in the first half as they quickly grabbed a 20-10 lead. That was short lived and La. Tech pulled to within two at the half. The second half was tightly contested. The Cowboys led 46-41 with 10:30 left in the second stanza. But the Bulldogs then took the lead. Later McNeese tied the contest when Chris Faggi hit a jumper to put the score at 61 all with 32 seconds left. Tech worked for the last shot but could not put it up as regulation play ended. In the third overtime with seconds remaining and the Cowboys with the lead. Tech’s Emerson Wafer came down with the rebound. Chris Faggi then proceeded to play one on one defense on Wafer. He passed the ball off to a teammate, but before he could throw up a shot the buzzer sounded giv- ing the Pokes the victory.
