Rick Barbier COWBOYS BEAT INDIANS (70-63) The McNeese Cowboys rolled past Arkansas State to open the conference with a 70-63 victory in the Civic Center. Chaffould opened the scoring with a short jumper, and after a steal by Chris Faggi, he jammed one home to open a 4-0 lead. Martinez Grimes added another two a few seconds later to make it 6-0, and the Cowboys never looked back in the first half as they rolled to a 39-23 lead by half. In the second period the Cowboys ran their lead up to twenty when Faggi put one in from off the glass to make it 47-27. But the Indians rallied to cut their deficit down to 7. The Pokes out-rebounded the Indians 36-29 as Chaf- fould picked the boards clean for 13 rebounds. The win lifted the Pokes over the .500 mark to 9-8 on the season. = Above: top, Chaffould puts it in for two. Bottom: Dumars in a scramble. ‘ 214 ¢ Sports ise «ities :

Chris Boyd COWBOYS NIP CARDINALS (51-49) Joe Dumars hit a 20 foot jumper at the buzzer to give the McNeese Cowboys an upset win over the Lamar Cardinals 51-49 in the Lake Charles Civic Center. The shot capped off one of the best efforts of the season for the Cowboys. After being down at halftime, McNeese pulled out in front of the Cardinals. The game then went to the Pokes advantage as they, supported by a very LOUD MSU crowd, controlled the momentum of the contest. McNeese called time out with 12 seconds left, Joe Dumars then calmly took a pass from David Green and hit the shot heard round the world or at least the con- ference anyway. The win brought McNeese’s season record to 12-11 and their conference tally to 3-3. Above: top, Barbier signals for the ball. Bottom: Chaffould goes for the shot. Sports 215
