Cowboy Basketball As a team the Cowboys produced a 14-15 overall record and finished fourth in the Southland Conference regular season, tying for third in the postseason SLC tournament. Considering the opposition, it was a good year for the Cowboys whose lineup was speckled by newcomers and freshmen. Five teams that McNeese faced during the season were selected to play in either the NCAA tournament or the NIT (NE Louisiana, SW Louisiana, Marquette and Ohio State tabbed for the NCAA and Lamar for the NIT) and two of those teams the Cowboys played twice and one, (USL) they played three times. Joe Dumars, David Green and Chris Faggi reached personal milestones during the past basketball season for the McNeese State Cowboys. Dumars, the talented rookie from Natchitoches, set a team scoring record for a freshman as he came up with 527 points to pace the Pokes with an 18.2 point per game average. In leading the Cowboys in scoring, Dumars was in the running for the SLC title all year long, being one of only two rookies to ever challenge for the league leadership. He was named to the all-SLC team and the league’s ‘Newcomer of the Year,’”” became only the 10th player in MSU history to score more than 500 points in a single season. Green picked up 110 assists this season to give him a total of 329 in his two year career, good enough to snap the career record of 321 that was held by Bertel Reder. He was also tops in steals for McNeese with 42. And, Faggi, playing his final season, moved into ninth place on the all-time scoring and rebounding chart at McNeese. He closed out his four-year career with 1,463 points and 609 rebounds.
