But as they have so many times before, McNeese totally dominated the rest of the fourth quarter to win by a score of 27-20. Tech had just scored a touchdown which was set up by a Buford Jordon fumble at the Cowboy 15 to take the 20-17 lead, and on the ensuing kickoff the Pokes got only to their own 16. McNeese 20 — Lamar 20 Don Stump collected his record while Stephen Starring and Mark Barousse came close in McNeese State’s 20-20 deadlock with Lamar University. Stump, who had been eyeing both the state and the Southland Conference record for points from placement all season long, chalked up the standard by booting two field goals and two PATs. Starring, who engineered the final quarter 17-point flurry, completed 10 of 25 passes in the game for 251 yards, only three short of the McNeese single game record. And, Barousse caught five of those passes for a total of 152 yards, this mark being only seven yards shy of the school single game record. In other statistical areas, sophomore tailback Buford Jordon rushed for more than 100 yards for the fifth time this season as he netted 114 yards on 14 carries and also scored two touchdowns. Those two six-pointers shoved his season total to 15, leaving him only two short of the Cowboy record. Senior tailback Theron McClendon continued banging toward the record of all-time McNeese leading rusher. He netted 59 yards on nine carries in the game to move his career total to 2,738 yards, only 24 yards from taking the record.
