McNeese 27 — Arkansas State 7 Buford Jordon cracked the 100-yard rushing mark for the fifth time this season and Rusty Guilbeau made four of his game high of nine tackles behind-the-line of scrimmage to pace McNeese State in its Southland Conference opening victory over Arkansas State. The 6-2, 222-pound Jordon was the workhorse of the Cowboy offensive attack during the game, carrying the football a season high 30 times for a net of 157 yards. He also scored the final touchdown of the night for the Cowboys, that coming on a 10-yard run. All told, McNeese collected 207 yards rushing in the contest and had a total offense of 307 yards. Quarterback Stephen Starring accounted for 108 of these total yards as he rushed for eight yards and completed four-of-seven passes for 100. One of those tosses was a 40-yard touchdown strike to split end Mark Barousse who led the game with two catches for 56 yards. Also offensively, fullback James Galloway had 22 yards on five carries while Theron McClendon moved another step closer toward becoming McNeese’s all-time leading rusher as he picked up 16 yards. In the place kicking department, senior Don Stump returned to duty and booted one of two PATs while also getting into the scoring act was Cowboy offensive tackle Lonnie Collins who pounced on a fumble in the end zone for McNeese’s first touchdown. Defensively, the 6-4, 261-pound Guilbeau was the leader as he collected a game high of nine tackles, four of them behind the line of scrimmage. Also high on the tackle chart were free safety Carlton Briscoe and linebacker Johnny Spano with eight stops and linebacker Joey Granger and cornerback Leonard Smith with seven. Free safety Derrick Batiste had six tackles on the game and also came up with two pass interceptions while strong safety Robert Davenport had a pass steal and six tackles. Derrick Batiste and Mark Barousse were selected “Players of the Game” for McNeese State in the Cowboys’ victory over Arkansas State. Batiste, a free safety, was selected for his defensive play in the game and Barousse, a split end, for his offensive play. The victory was the 12th Southland Conference win in a row for the Cowboys who now stand 1-0 in league play and 5-2 on the season. McNeese 20 — Lamar 20 Don Stump collected his record while Stephen Starring and Mark Barousse came close in McNeese State’s 20-20 deadlock with Lamar University. Stump, who had been eyeing both the state and the Southland Conference record for points from placement all season long, chalked up the standard by booting two field goals and two PATs. Starring, who engineered the final quarter 17-point flurry, completed 10 of 25 passes in the game for 251 yards, only three short of the McNeese single game record. And, Barousse caught five of those passes for a total of 152 yards, this mark being only seven yards shy of the school single game record. In other statistical areas, sophomore tailback Buford Jordon rushed for more than 100 yards for the fifth time this season as he netted 114 yards on 14 carries and also scored two touchdowns. Those two six-pointers shoved his season total to 15, leaving him only two short of the Cowboy record. Senior tailback Theron McClendon continued banging toward the record of all-time McNeese leading rusher. He netted 59 yards on nine carries in the game to move his career total to 2,738 yards, only 24 yards from taking the record. Sophomore Derrick Batiste return- ed two punts for 42 yards, his final punt return of the game covering 35 yards and setting up McNeese’s game-tying touchdown. On defense, Stump’s punting was a factor for the Cowboys as he averaged 46.2 yards on five punts while Joey Granger intercepted a pass, Leonard Smith blocked a field goal attempt and Leroy Gedward, Mark Helms, Richard Goerlich, Rusty Guilbeau and Carlos Trevino were leaders in tackles. Place kicker Don Stump and defensive end Mark Helms were selected the outstanding players of the game in McNeese State’s deadlock with Lamar. Stump was named the outstan- ding offensive player and Helms was a defenisve leader on the team, coming up with a total of 11 tackles. The tie for McNeese left the Pokes with a 1-0-1 league record.
