McNeese 47 Northeastern 25 “It’” was a goalline stand turned in by the McNeese State defense in a 41-25 Cowboy victory over North- east Louisiana. What the defense did was turn back the Indians on four consecutive plays from inside the 10 in the early minutes of the fourth period with the Cowboys only up by a 28-17 count. The four plays had Cowboy free safety Carlton Briscoe breaking up the first pass, the next two off target and the fourth play finding linebacker Joey Granger sacking Indian quarterback Bob Lane. Offensively for the Cowboys, it was another good night for the running game, the Pokes eclipsing the 400- yard mark. The big noise was lota sophomore Buford “Munchie” Jordon ripping off 208 yards, the sixth best single game total in McNeese history. Quarterback Stephen Starring followed with 92 yards and a total of- fense of 229 yards as he also completed nine of 15 passes for 137 yards and senior tailback Theron McClen- don getting 68 yards. In other areas, flanker Dwayne Dartez led in pass receiving with four catches for 55 yards and Jordon was tops in points as he scored four touchdowns. Defen- sively for the Pokes, Granger had a couple of sacks and five tackles while Robert Davenport, Leroy Gedward, Leonard Smith, Clay Rougeau and Bernard Bell had four tackles apiece. Flanker Dwayne Dartez and cornerback Bernard Bell were selected the outstanding players of the game. Above: Don Stump with the extra point. Left: Archie Moore (71), Buford Jordon (24). Sports ¢ 203

McNeese 27 — Arkansas State 7 Buford Jordon cracked the 100-yard rushing mark for the fifth time this season and Rusty Guilbeau made four of his game high of nine tackles behind-the-line of scrimmage to pace McNeese State in its Southland Conference opening victory over Arkansas State. The 6-2, 222-pound Jordon was the workhorse of the Cowboy offensive attack during the game, carrying the football a season high 30 times for a net of 157 yards. He also scored the final touchdown of the night for the Cowboys, that coming on a 10-yard run. All told, McNeese collected 207 yards rushing in the contest and had a total offense of 307 yards. Quarterback Stephen Starring accounted for 108 of these total yards as he rushed for eight yards and completed four-of-seven passes for 100. One of those tosses was a 40-yard touchdown strike to split end Mark Barousse who led the game with two catches for 56 yards. Also offensively, fullback James Galloway had 22 yards on five carries while Theron McClendon moved another step closer toward becoming McNeese’s all-time leading rusher as he picked up 16 yards. In the place kicking department, senior Don Stump returned to duty and booted one of two PATs while also getting into the scoring act was Cowboy offensive tackle Lonnie Collins who pounced on a fumble in the end zone for McNeese’s first touchdown. Defensively, the 6-4, 261-pound Guilbeau was the leader as he collected a game high of nine tackles, four of them behind the line of scrimmage. Also high on the tackle chart were free safety Carlton Briscoe and linebacker Johnny Spano with eight stops and linebacker Joey Granger and cornerback Leonard Smith with seven. Free safety Derrick Batiste had six tackles on the game and also came up with two pass interceptions while strong safety Robert Davenport had a pass steal and six tackles. Derrick Batiste and Mark Barousse were selected “Players of the Game” for McNeese State in the Cowboys’ victory over Arkansas State. Batiste, a free safety, was selected for his defensive play in the game and Barousse, a split end, for his offensive play. The victory was the 12th Southland Conference win in a row for the Cowboys who now stand 1-0 in league play and 5-2 on the season.
