McNeese 42 — Northwestern 27 The Northwestern Demons watched the roof cave in under an awesome Cowboy rushing attack and crumbled to a 42-21 defeat. The Cowboys rushed for 381 yards and added 93 more in the air en route to their third victory in five games this year. On the offense Buford Jordon rolled up 141 yards on 28 carries, while Theron McClendon rambled for an even 100 on 14. Quarterback Stephen Starring passed for 93 yards, hitting seven of 12 passes, and ran for 41 more. Fullback Ronnie Landry added 59 yards on 10 carries and run- ning mate James Galloway 24 on six. All total, McNeese had 474 offensive yards, the fourth straight time the Cowboys have surpassed the 400-yard mark this season. Defensively, the Cowboys dominated the game, holding the Demons to only 45 yards rushing and to 259 yards passing, most of this total offense of 304 yards coming after the Pokes had taken a 35-7 lead. The Pokes intercepted five passes in the game, the sec- ond time the Poke second Cowboy secondary pulled off such a feat this season. Robert Daven- «| port, Derrick Batiste, Leonard Smith, Carlton i Briscoe, and Todd McArthur made off with pass steals during the game. West Texas State 37 ea McNeese 24 A near Fecha EasNS pass performance by quarterback Stephen Starring and outstanding kicking by Tony Whit- tington and Brian Blanco highlighted McNeese State’s football game with West Texas State. Starring had the best single game passing performance of his career as he hit on 15-of-22 passes for 249 yards and one touchdown. And, he also scrambled his way for 38 yards rushing, giving him a grand total of 287 yards in the game. Whittington, a rookie from Baytown, Tex., and Blanco, a sophomore from Morgan City, were pressed into service as kickers for the Cowboys when Don Stump was out with an injury. Whittington, a bare-foot soccer style kicker, took over the placekicking duties and on his first collegiate field goal attempt, he tallied a 48-yarder, the sixth longest in McNeese history. He also nailed three straight PATs and consistently booted the football into the end zones on his kickoffs. Blanco, who also serves as a tight end, took over the punting ; chores and averaged 41.6 yards on three punts. In other areas, Buford Jordon and Dwayne Dartez led the team in pass receptions with four apiece, while Rus- ty Guilbeau and Johnny Spano were the leaders in tackles with 13 and 12, respectively. Guilbeau also had three behind the line of scrimmage stops. Quarterback Stephen Starring and defensive tackle Bill Kingrey were named the outstanding players for the game. McNeese 47 Northeastern 25 “It’” was a goalline stand turned in by the McNeese State defense in a 41-25 Cowboy victory over North- east Louisiana. What the defense did was turn back the Indians on four consecutive plays from inside the 10 in the early minutes of the fourth period with the Cowboys only up by a 28-17 count. The four plays had Cowboy free safety Carlton Briscoe breaking up the first pass, the next two off target and the fourth play finding linebacker Joey Granger sacking Indian quarterback Bob Lane. Offensively for the Cowboys, it was another good night for the running game, the Pokes eclipsing the 400- yard mark. The big noise was lota sophomore Buford “Munchie” Jordon ripping off 208 yards, the sixth best single game total in McNeese history. Quarterback Stephen Starring followed with 92 yards and a total of- fense of 229 yards as he also completed nine of 15 passes for 137 yards and senior tailback Theron McClen- don getting 68 yards. In other areas, flanker Dwayne Dartez led in pass receiving with four catches for 55 yards and Jordon was tops in points as he scored four touchdowns. Defen- sively for the Pokes, Granger had a couple of sacks and five tackles while Robert Davenport, Leroy Gedward, Leonard Smith, Clay Rougeau and Bernard Bell had four tackles apiece.
