Methods and techniques of writing, and preparing a news- paper for publication were two of the topics discussed at the high school newspaper semi- nar hosted by the ‘‘Contra- band”’ staff. Several speakers addressed the group and pre- sented demonstrations and activities for the students They included Les DeVall, Gary Snyder, Kevin Troutman and Don Kingery of the Amer = can Press. A senate bill for a SUB assessment increase was passed in the fall semester allowing three dollars more per person to be available to SUB for top mov- les and entertainment for the students. Charles H. “Charlie Goens. a veteran of 18 years of law enforcement experience. was named director of Campus police at MSU. Dr. Benjamin Ruhl. professor of Health and Physical education retired after 26 years of teaching. He joined the faculty in 1965. 5 An organized booster club for the purpose of pro- viding financial assistance to the women’s athletic program was formed. Thirty-six young ladies were nominated for fresh- man court and eight were elected by the student body on Sept. 8. They include Phyllis Breeden. Laura David. Maret Lester, Eva Preyean. and Jeanette Stafford. The court was presented at the McNeese vs. Nicholls foot- ball game on Oct. 7. Mariet Lester was elected Fresh- man Queen. Freshman senators elected for the 1978-79 year were Pam Anderson, Laura David, Danny Gothreaux. Cindy Lincoln. and Chris Masse.

Area merchants cooperated with SUB by furnishing clothes and accessories for one of the finest, most contemporary fashion shows at McNeese. Coordinator of the show was Franet Meyer who began plan- ning the show early in the fall semester. Six MSU students repre- sented McNeese publications at the annual National Council of College Publications Advi- sors Seminar in Houston. On the weekend of Oct. 24, Kappa Alpha celebrated its ninth birthday with “Grande Manger.” Plans for a 3.7 million dollar physical education facility were released by Paul Ritter, director of Planning and Facili- ties. They included renovation of the arena, addition of three - basketball courts, four rac- quetball courts, storage, weight lifting equipment, offices, and dressing rooms. To be a part of the new facili- ties will be an olympic-sized swimming pool. 5 ROTC held the annual Tur- key Shoot Nov. 17-18 for the Thanksgiving contest, and Dec. 15-16 for the Christmas contest. According to Dr. Thomas Leary, a 40-ft. rappelling tower for military science students would be built through dona- tions from several community- minded firms and organiza- tions.
