A senate bill for a SUB assessment increase was passed in the fall semester allowing three dollars more per person to be available to SUB for top mov- les and entertainment for the students. Charles H. “Charlie Goens. a veteran of 18 years of law enforcement experience. was named director of Campus police at MSU. Dr. Benjamin Ruhl. professor of Health and Physical education retired after 26 years of teaching. He joined the faculty in 1965. 5 An organized booster club for the purpose of pro- viding financial assistance to the women’s athletic program was formed. Thirty-six young ladies were nominated for fresh- man court and eight were elected by the student body on Sept. 8. They include Phyllis Breeden. Laura David. Maret Lester, Eva Preyean. and Jeanette Stafford. The court was presented at the McNeese vs. Nicholls foot- ball game on Oct. 7. Mariet Lester was elected Fresh- man Queen. Freshman senators elected for the 1978-79 year were Pam Anderson, Laura David, Danny Gothreaux. Cindy Lincoln. and Chris Masse.

An early highlight for the semester was the ‘‘Meet the Candidates” Forum sponsored by the Contraband in cooperation with SGA and SUB. This activity was held eight days before the election. According to several students and administrators, this activity improved the image of McNeese for the eyes of the community. It also attracted favorable attention from students attending the forum. All five candidates for the post of District Attorney were present at the forum — Fred Book, Lenn Knapp, Raleigh Newman, Larry Roach, and Frank Salter. = Bryan Gill, Dale Martin, Paul Miller, and David O’Bryan were the four students on the questioning panel for the forum. ; GPR ie er aa aaa Approximately five-hundred individuals attended the forum held in the Leland Parra Ballroom of the Stu- dent Union Annex. a NN ARR The straw vote conducted after the for by Lenn Knapp and Knapp emerged as the winner of the DA election. :

Methods and techniques of writing, and preparing a news- paper for publication were two of the topics discussed at the high school newspaper semi- nar hosted by the ‘‘Contra- band”’ staff. Several speakers addressed the group and pre- sented demonstrations and activities for the students They included Les DeVall, Gary Snyder, Kevin Troutman and Don Kingery of the Amer = can Press.
