Arkansas State 6, McNeese 3 A last second field goal by the Indi- ans Doug Dobbs provided the winning margin for Arkansas State as the Pokes fell in their second SLC tilt. It was truly a defensive battle, and was probably the best defensive perform- ance by McNeese all year. Doug Fruge, who was named conference Defensive Player of the Week, was everywhere, collecting 21 tackles. Don Stump accounted for the only Poke score, on a 31-yard field goal. The Port Arthur, Texas native was most impressive as a punter, averaging 46.6 yards on eight kicks. The loss virtually ended any chances of an Independ- ence Bowl bid for the Cowboys. It was a game of shattered records, as Richard Ellender ran a punt back for 84 yards and a touchdown, and Don Stump ran his consecutive PAT skein to 23.
