INVOlV at McNe Jack Doland heads up one of the most successful athletic programs in the South, one that participates in 11 varsity sports, the men in seven and the women in four. Since 1970 Doland has held the dual role of athletic director and head football coach and he’s one of only two head football coaches in the nation to also possess a Ph.D. degree. While here at McNeese he gathered together a most outstanding coaching Staff. Doland’s football coaching staff includes one that is not only versatile but also well experienced. His first assistant is defensive back field coach Ernie Duplechin (23 years experience) while Hubert Boales (23 years experi- ence) serves as the linebacker coach and Tucker Debetaz (15 years experi- ence) serves as defensive line coach. Handling the offensive phase of the coaching are backfield coach Ted Brevelle (14 years experience), line coach John McCann (6 years experi- ence) and receiver coach Johnny Suy- dam (6 years experience). Other members of the McNeese coaching staff are 15 year veteran Bob Hayes who has guided the Cowboy track program for the past 11 seasons, former Cowboy letterman Glenn Duhon who directs the basketball pro- gram that includes Denny Wright and George Murphy as assistants on his coaching staff and led his team to the league championship in his first sea- son; and Margie Hinton, who is the women’s sports coordinator. ] a | | | : ee

Coaches eese Cowboy assistant football coaches have the dual responsibility of also coaching spring sports, as Brevelle doubles with tennis, Boales doubles with golf and Suydam takes care of baseball. The University’s athletic trainer and now in his fourth year is Jim Murphy, a registered physical therapist. The McNeese Faculty Athletic Council consists of the following: Dr. Charles Sparks (Chairman), Clet Gary, Dr. Michael Connella, Bill Gossett, David Rigney,-Dr. Hugh McFatter, Dr. Colleen O’Neal and Dr. William Ber- geron. Louis Bonnett serves as the Athletic Business Manager and Sports Inform- ation Director. The McNeese athletic facilities have been on the grow since 1970 and the Cowboys play their football games in | the 20,000 seat Cowboy Stadium. Basketball is played in the 6,500 capacity Lake Charles Civic Center while track is run on a Chevron 440 track (one of the fastest in the South). Just recently they added under- ground watering and reworked the baseball field and also added eight | brand new Plexi-pave tennis courts. Since the turn of the decade athlet- ics at McNeese have grown to such a state that the Cowboys are not just contenders in each conference spon- sored sport, they are the team oppo- nents have to beat for championship.
