Basketball at McNeese during the 1968-69 season was an ominous beginning, a promise of another great season, disappointment, a skunk in the Arena during a game, and hope for next year. Traveling to East Texas State, the Cowboys dropped the game 75-69 and closed out the season with a 54-43 loss to Nicholls State in Thibodaux. lt closed out the most frustrating season for the Cowboys in their road tilts as they lost every one. After the opener, the Pokes perked up and reeled off five straight wins to get hopes up and then faded to close the season with a 9-12 sheet. Two Georges provided some light during the dim season, those being Boyd and Murphy. Boyd, a 6-9 senior from Farmington, Mo., was the Cowboys' leading scorer and rebounder during the season. He tallied a 16.0 overage on 335 points and hauled down 239 rebounds for 11.4 per game. Only a freshman, the 6-2 Murphy came on strong at the end of the season to fulfill a pre-season prediction of athletic director A. I. Ratcliff. During November, Ratcliff said that the Brooklyn native would be in the Cow- boy's starting lineup before the season was over. In his last five games, he averaged 16 points a contest and 12 rebounds to give promise of things to come. His late performance enabled him to become only the fifth freshman in Cowboy history to tally over 100 points dur- ing a season.
