5fie Reward Mc ary 5akes State l l The 1968 lVlcNary basketball team vvas, without a doubt, the greatest basketball team in the state, and the finest group of athletes ever to don the royal blue and white jerseys. The Celtic rooters were also unparalleled in their unquenchable spirit and im- peccable conduct. The state tournament provided the crowning glory for a fine Celtic season. The Celts dominated Valley League with 22 wins and 5 losses. They started their season by beating first-ranked Klamath Falls twice and third-ranked Jefferson once. During the climb to the championship, the mighty Celts defeated six of the eight district champions. ln the first game of the tournament, Hank DeHaan collected four fouls in the first half and went on to contain big man Bob Thomas and the rest of the Wy East team. The Celts started poorly in their second game against David Douglas, but came back to a resounding 54 to 45 overtime victory. The game against Jefferson was a reenactment of the preseason stomp with Rob Cameron scoring 14 points to make the tally 77 to 68. The pressure of the championship game obviously affected both teams. Finer games had been played on the Celtic and the Laker courts, but never had there been more at stake. The cool precision that had carried the Celts throughout the season prevailed in the end so that the Lakers joined the ranks of the many fine teams that had fallen before the unbeatable Celtics.
