Monk is honored as the 1086 87 TOTEM DEDICATEE. Dr Monk has been a Professor of Religion and Chairperson to the Division of Humanities for several years He has earned the respect of faculty and students alike with the caring manner by which he instructs his classes. Before arriving at McMurry. Dr. Monk received a BA in Sociology from Texas Tech University, a BD in Religion from Southern Methodist University, and MA and PhD in Religion from Princeton University. His honors include the Danforth Campus Ministry Grant, the Lilly Foundation Junior Fellowship award, and the Outstanding h.ducators of America Honor for three years. Dr Monk s fields of specialization include Church History and the History of Christian Thought. Dr. Thomas K. Kim. is known to all students. He interacts with them anywhere from his office to picnics in Wah Wahtaysee Park. He cares about each and every stu dent and demonstrates this through his willingness to talk with them. Dr Kim is similar to the students in some ways. In addition to being President of the College, he is a person with a sense of humor, a man with the youth of a teen- ager. and yet a father-figure to all stu- dents. This event pro- vides a rare chance for Dr. Kim to speak to the student body as a whole, and he takes full advan- tage of this opportunity to give advice and wel- come the students to school. In his address. Dr Kim stressed the importance of a liberal arts education and a core curriculum, but mainly pointed out how special the chance for higher education and the friendships developed at college could be to students long after graduation. SS Convocation College Series College Series - dreaded words by full-time students, but a necessary and often fun part of life at McMurry This year was filled with numerous opportuni ties for students to obtain their required College Series credits. College Senes - 89 Slime Olympics 90 Slime Olympics Sliming”, the age-old MeMurry tradition, took on a new look this year as the freshmen wore Slime Shirts Instead of the familiar Slime Caps”, or beanies. Some things, however, haven't changed, and one of those things is Slime Olympics, a competition between the freshmen and upperclasmen held In Woh Wahtaysee Park. Some new games were introduced this year, such as LifeSavers and orange passes, but, as usual, the day ended with the tug-o-war. Sponsored by the cheerleaders. Slime Olympics helps the fresh men get acquainted with other students and gets them involved early in MeMurry activities. Slitne Olympics - 9 Studio McM, disguised as the Snack Bar during the week, provides a great place to get away from It all on the weekends. Hardly a week goes by when a club or organization doesn't sponsor a dance. McMurry students, and sometimes students from other schools, gather in Studio McM to meet other students, so- cialize, dance, and just to have a good time. Stude McM 93 HO «mu Spring Thing is a week full of free ac- tivities for McMurry students sponsored every spring by MSG. There is a little something for everyone. This year the week began with a dance in Old Indian Gym. Next came a day at Putt Putt Golf and Games. Fun Night was held at the First Baptist Church and a school-wide Scavenger Hunt ended the week For souvenlers. MSG gave students Spring Thing mugs. Spring Thing - 95 Rush Women students are allowed to pledge in the fall and spring semesters at McMurry. Both semesters, pledging begins with a Rush Tea, where pro- spective pledges meet with represen- tatives from each social dub. Next comes Coke parties and In the spring. Rush parties also follow. Both of these events give prospective pledges a chance to meet with each club and meet all of Its members. When this Is over, preference cards arc signed, bids given, and pledging begins. After weeks, (which seem like an eternity), most. The Indians, led by RICKY CULLUM with 118 yards rushing, outscored Kanas Wesleyan 1715 The home opener ted to a second Indian victory over Lambuth College. The Indian defense held Lambuth to minus yards rushing and 124 yards passing The Indians opened conference play October 4 against number nine ranked Austin College with an upset victory. 206 The Indians stuck to their strong ground game and pounded out 218 yards The Brave defense was very strong again They held the Kangaroos to only 72 yards on the ground and 169 yards in the air. The defense sacked the quarterback seven times, including one interception by JACK WHITELEY that he carried 68 yards for an Indian touchdown. The Indians finished the season in 3rd place behind Tarelton State and Austin College. McMurray ranked 2nd in conference in rushing with 1.446 yards VINCE McDANIEL finished 3rd in conference rushing with 667 yards; and RICKY CULLUM finishing fourth with 471 yards, paced the Indians throughout the season. The Indian defense rounded the season off ranking first in total team defense, allowing only 3,011 yards all season They were also first in rushing defense with 1250 yards. BOBBY WALKER finished the season with four interceptions to place second in conference and JACK WHITELEY followed close behind with three CHRIS JOSEPH ended the year with 158 tackles, only eight from the single season confer ence record. Working together with these qualities, the Indians won their eighth TIAA conference championship in nine years. TANICE MASON was the leading scorer for the Indians with 344 points and a 14.3 average per game. TINA BROWN had 159 rebounds averaging 6.6 per game. Despite the win-loss record. Tarle ton placed first with 84 points. Austin College was second with 52. Me Murry third with 33. and Sul Ross trailed behind in fourth with 15 points McMurry's TODD CRAWFORD won the 400 meter hur dies with a time of 55.4 while the Indians captured the 1,600 meter relay with a time of 3:21.5. The relay team consisted of STEVE DAVIS. BENJAMIN BEAVER. JO STEWART, and JIM BOB JACOBS. DIANN RIFFE was the only Lady Indian to place. She took sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 17'7 . But when the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association track meet rolled around these ladies took second. The Indians scored 61 points only behind Tarleton’s 83. DIANN RIFFE scored 33.75 points, winning four events while competing in nine others. She was also named the outstanding women's track performer. RIFFE took first In the 100 and 200 meter dashes, the 400 meter hurdles and the javelin. In addition to Rifle's perfor- mances, MARSHA MOORELAND won the 1500 meter with a time of 5:16.1 LANA L YKINS won the 800 meter with a time of 2:32.9. Going Into the conference tournament the men's tennis team looked promising. Following wins over Trinity University's junior varsity and Texas Lutheran, the McMurry men s team defeated Weatherford Junior College, 4-3. McMurry finished second out of seven teams In the Texas Small College tournament. McMurry had a good shot at winning the first place men s title. In the end, however. Trinity came out on top with 75 points and McMurry second with 64 points. Trinity and McMurry s men's teams had head to head battles throughout the tournament. McMurry had five of six players advance past first round and three advance to the quarter finals. The tournament proved to be a good warm up for TIAA conference meet Again the men took the conference crown with 30 points over Austin College with 22. BO BURTON, GARRET PITTENGER. JIMMY BLANTON.
