Dr Downs has been involved in many areas of the college since joining the faculty in 1970. and has been an inspiration to all of the students. During her years at McMurry. Dr Downs has served as chairwoman of the McMurry Planning Task Force on curriculum and organization, was chairwoman of the history department until she decided to devote more time to research, and has served as a member of the College Council of faculty members who advise the college president She was instrumental in getting the Senior Colloquium program started here at McMurry, and re- established Phi Alpha Theta, an honorary history fraternity, on the campus. In 1979. Dr Downs was named to an associateship by the Danforth Foundation Danforth associates work to keep meaning and ethical values in education. Dr Downs is the first faculty member to receive an associateship while at McMurry Dr. Downs is also active outside of the college She has spent many years working with the Girl Scouts, and has served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church Presently a member of the Abilene Centennial Committee. Dr. Downs also worked with Abilene's Bi-Centennial Celebration in 1976 Dr. Downs specializes in history of the Southwest, and is presently serving on the Executive Committee of the West Texas Historical Society Those of us who have had Dr Downs as a professor know that there is never a dull moment in her class. From eating Texas-shaped cookies in Texas History, to looking down the barrel of her Colt 45. her classes are designed to keep the student awake and paying attention! Both of their losses were by less than 5 points. IN the TIAA conference tournament. McMurry met Sul Ross ond won 87-82. Austin College competed against the Indians for the second game, where the Indians won by 11 points. Sports — 109 Shoot The Hoop The 1980-81 McMurry Maidens began the season with a slow start, but their momentum soon began to build At the beginning of the season they played many tough teams like San Angelo. Howard County, and Odessa They also came up agamst quite a bit of com- petition in the San Angelo tournament All the McMurry Maidens' hard work ad- vanced them to the playoffs. On March 14th the teom of 12 women met at Hunt PE Center to face the Tarteton Texons. The game began well and at halftime McMurry led by 9 points. It was a close game until the final 45 seconds, when the Maidens began to foul. Tarleton won on free throws. 41-31. It was a fair season for the Mighty Maidens, but they believe things are looking up for the coming season.
