The sunset ceremony signified the start of the building of the Authentic Indian tepees by the social clubs on campus. The tepees were erected in Wah Wahtaysee Park. Tours were held for Abilene school children and interested visitors. There was a special opening of Art Across the Plains in the Ryan Fine Arts Center. These were artworks done by living American Indians. A torchlight pep rally was held and and all-night guard was kept bv the tepee building Indians. There were a schedule of events including the Homecoming Show, a intra-squad basketball game. Road Race, dub reunions, and the traditional “paint- ing of the Braves before the big game with Austin College. Homecoming came to a close with an alumni and student gathering and a dance. 10 McMurry - The Place That n Shares The Continued Tradition 12 Of Tepee Village 13 McMurry - The Place That Is 14 The Place To Be 1980 Totem Dedication The TOTEM this year is dedicated to a very spe- cial person known all around the McMurry cam- pus. .James Robert Allen, known to his friends around campus as .Jim. has lived in Abilene since he was three years of age. Just ask the players. Their season lasts the year round because to play this sport is an all -consuming passion, a love-hate relationship, if you will, and the range of emotions one must endure are astounding. Just what motivates these people? What makes them suffer through two arduous workouts a day in stifling August? What makes them subject themselves to the mental anquish of sitting on the bench when they’re just sure that the guy playing in front of then isn’t half the player they are? Why do they risk crippling injury? Why? Surprisingly, the answer is fairly simple. They do it for these brief moments of extreme exhilaration that seen to come so rarely when compared to all the drudgery. One who has never played could never understand the feeling the offensive lineman has when he puts the man across from him flat on his back; the defensive back when he times his hit on the receiver so perfectly with the arrival of the ball as to cause an incompletion in a key third- down dituation; the quarterback and receiver when they make connection in full stride; the players will tell you that there's simply nothing like it. Football coaches: Coach Rates. Coach Findley, Coach Aldridge McMurry 35; Lubbock Christian 6 History was made back on September 1 in Lubbock as the Lubbock Christioan Chaparrals played their first-ever intercollegiate football game. 6000 fans gathered to welcome the Chaps, but what they saw wasn’t quite the overwhelming rout that everyone was expecting. The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie. but after that the Indians’ began to roll. Before it was over the Tribe would accumulate 418 yards total offense with scores coming from a run by Dudley Woodard. Brett Lang to Ricki Williams pass. Lang to Keith Gipson pass, a punt return by Glen Coles and another plunge by Woodard. The tribe defense was awesome holding the Chaps to a minus five yards rushing. 45 ?£ -rlkftftjTlY Captam Quarterback Bret I.ang Off Back-Charlie Meurer Off Line-Don Hay i Captain -Def Line Bruce Lacefield 46 Captain-Receiver Rickie Williams Line-Johnny Burleaon Def. Charles Johnson sparked the Tribe with a 163 yard rushing effort while Brett Lang was passing for 163 more. A three-man Tribe pass rush, manned at various times by Mark Behrens. Bruce Lacefield, Leroy Duncan, and Keith Ernst tortured the Tigers’ offensive line and Sacked Meisenback five times. Panhandle State 16 McMurry 3 Disaster! Everything that could possibly go wrong did. and the heavily-favored Indians were slapped with their first loss of the sea- son by a fired-up bunch of Aggies from Good- well. Oklahoma. An omen of things to come happened in the first quarter when the cen- ter snap sailed over the head of punter Rob- ert Pittard and into the end zone for a safety. It was then downhill all the way as the Tribe’s offense was slowly but surely taken apart. 48 McMurry 16 Austin College 6 OFFENSIVE BACKS Still reeling from the previous week's debacle against Panhandle State, the Indians came back from smarting criticism and played serious ball against Austin College. They built a solid 16-0 halftime lead under the talent of coaches Aldridge. Estes, and Finley. The Tribe took matters into their own hands and were sim- ply marvelous. McMurry 37 Sul Ross 11 The smallest man on the field turned out to be the largest on this day in Indian Stadium. Keith Gipson, all 5-4 and 135 pounds set a school record by catching 3 touchdown passes. An of- fensive line blew the Lobos off the line of scri- mage and the Tribe performed another amazing defense. The Indians now stood at 3-0 in confer- ence play. Tarleton 20 McMurry 14 The ball hung in the air for what seemed like an eternity as tiny Keith Gipson, who was wide open behind Tarleton’s secondary, awaited its descent. A routine catch and uncotested jaunt to the end zone would cap a furious and successful second half rally by McMurry. Indian fans were already celebrating as the ball began its downward flight. But Gipson dropped the ball. That long-waited win over Tarleton. which most everyone assumed would finally come on this day, would have to wait......again. 50 McMurry 45 Trinity 0 A lot of people were very worried about this game, due to their emotional draining loss to Tarleton. The Tigers were out for revenge also, but FORGET IT! The tribe was hot. An offen- sive explosion of 500 yards and a defense that inflicted cruel and unusual punishment cause an outright blowout for the Indians. Everyone got into the act. 5! LINEBACKERS DEFENSIVE LINEMEN Austin College 19 McMurry 0 This wasn’t to be the typical homecoming game. Aus- tin College came into the game ranked 9th and the Tribe ranked 19th. They were tied for the conference lead at 4-1 so T1AA supremacy was on the line. They fought and Austin came out on top. Coach Aldridge summed it up best when he said. They just lined up and whipped us. We whipped them down at their place and they whipped us here. We just happened to lose one in between.” Mc MURRY wmurRY M'MURRY' WMURRY DEFENSIVE BACKS McMurry 43 Sul Ross 14 TRAINERS AND MANAGERS McMurry 14 Tarleton 10 It was a long time coming, but it just made it that much sweeter when the Indians finally handed arch-rival Tarleton a TIAA conference loss. As always it was a bruising affair with McMurry grinding out two touchdowns. The Indian defense did a number on the Texans and finally beat the hated Tarleton Texans. Though the Tribe offense put on another show with 461 total yards, the spotlight was on the record- setting defense. The tribe secon- dary intercepted five Lobo passes to set a new school record for in- terceptions in a season with 26. Brett Lang was sharp connecting on 13 of 24 passes for 212 yards. McMurry 41; Colorado College 24 The setting couldn’t have been more beautiful for the Indians' last non conference game of the year. The leaves were bright yellow, the field a deep green and Pike's Peek loomed in the background on this day in Colorado Springs. The game lived up to the setting as the homecoming crowd saw a see saw battle with plenty of explosive offense. With but four minutes remaining the Indians were leading by only 28-24 and the outcome was in doubt. But Dudley Woodard, who gained 193 yards on the day. took over and scored on touchdown runs of 47 and 30 yards to give the Tribe a hard-earned 41-24 win. For the day. the Indians gained 449 yards on the ground establishing a new school record. McMurry Men’s Basketball Men's Ki-kethall Team: (hack Coach Rate . Chris McNair. Ruhen Steinbraun. Coach Larry Gibson en- tered the season never having coached a volleyball game in his life, but he was enthusiastic and instilled a spirited, competitive attitude in his young team. When the dust had cleared the team had posted the first ever winning record by a McMurry volleyball team, remarkable im- provement over the previous two seasons. The future looks bright in- deed as the 1979 team was loaded with youth, most of whom will be at it again in 1980. From the looks of things that sweet taste of success the team enjoyed will be experienced with even more regularity next year. sport — 69 (bark) Margaret Jackson. Jennifer Wood. A team with no seniors and only one junior earning a spot among the final 16 teams in the nation in AIAW Div. III. The first spot in a national playoff in any sport by a women’s team at McMurry Col- lege. As successful as it was, it was also, in a sense, a strange season. The Maidens were able to knock off several opponents from a higher division, but lost four straight times to confer- ence rival Tarleton State. Then in the fifth meeting, it was the Maidens who came away victorious, and the win earned them the region- al AIAW Div. Ill championship. Another giant stride toward respectability took place at season’s end when the All-America teams were announced McMurry's Tammy Clober was a first-team selection for that honor, thus becoming the first female athlete ever to earn All-America at McMurry. First-year head coach Renee Hicks was on cloud nine at season’s end. but she must be wondering what she can do for an encore. She must be feeling pretty good about her chances though. A Fierce rivalry has developed between the two teams, but the Tarleton team had always managed to come out on top simply by having more people entered in more events. In the conference meet Rickie Williams won the discus, Byron Sawyer won the shot, Wayne Cobb ran off with the 400 meters; the Indian’s 400 and 1600 meter relay teams came away win- ners. and Art Pertile was named the confer- ence’s Outstanding Freshman for 1980. Secretary To The Development Office 202 - Staff “The Road Not Taken” Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads onto way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverge in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. — Robert Frost Senior Recognition The Senior of 1980 were recognized by the Alumni Association at the Annual Senior Recognition Dinner.
