The final record was 2-8, but look at what the opposition did. Texas Lutheran went on to its second straight NAIA Division II championship, Ouachita Baptist made Division II semi-finals. Mill- saps College was in the NCAA Div. Ill playoffs and East Central State finished 8th in the final NAIA Div. I standings. ”We weren't hurting for competition this past season, quipped head coach, Don Newsom, who had led the Indians to their first winning season (6-4) since 1968 a year earlier. Our young quarterbacks were really thrown into the frying pan, yet they gained some experience, even though it was the hard, rough way. The Indians managed victories over Pan- handle State (16-7) and Monterrey Tec (14-13) during the first month of play. Three rookie quarterbacks tried their hands at directing the attack--Frank Andrews (pictured below and at right), Jody Bennett and Kevin Abel. Freshman Frank Andrews of Celina is shown leading the Indians to 18 second-half points against powerful jachita Baptist at Arkedelphia, Ark. He passed for two TDs and rushed for a third. 74--Sports Andrews is shown scoring on a short run against Ouachita Bap tist. A Rebuilding Year Youth and inexperience spelled the first losing season in four years for the Indians during the 1975-76 campaign. The Tribesmen went 8-and-18 in regular season action and 5-5 in the South Zone of the Texoma Athletic Conference. As- sistant Tommy Estes, a veteran on the Indian coaching staff, acted as head coach until Hershel Kimbrell was able to join the team on the bench in late January, following brain surgery. Larry Gibson, a junior college transfer, led the Inidans with a 20.4 game scoring average, second in the TAC, while sophomore postman David Nelson of Odessa was the league's No. 5 rebounder with 9.9 per game. The Indians managed upsets over eventual TAC champion Midwestern State and Lone Star Conference champion Howard Payne University. The 5-5 finish in the South Zone gave the Indians a respectable third place. While the Indians hit only 44. 8 per cent from the field, they made a sizzling 75.4 per cent from the foul line to finish 10th in the NAIA, and crack the school and conference records. Senior Cliff Stephens hit 83 per cent at the foul line. Gibson made first team All- TAC and the All-District 8 team and honorable mention NAIA All-American.
