From the addition of the new science center to the laying of new floor tile in Old Main, it can easily be said that things are hap- peningn. The computerized systems, new this year, have certainly cut down on the time necessary for ever so many campus calcula- tions. .tv , f N XXfe have tried to improve this past yearg and so doing we can not help but improve the college in every facet of college development. All things considered, we can still see room for improvementg but no one can say that nothing is being done, for McMurry College is striving to ready its campus complex for the stu- dents of the future. vw hQ .Q The a e of the com uter is reall here as shown b ii eraznr A is s P Y ' ' Y P Bill Goosby. ,....-- ' W D Dr. Bennett shows pleasure during the ceremony dedicating the Science Center. ORTO JONES As McMurry College celebrated its Golden Anniversary during the 1973-74 academic year, the Totem staff took on the awesome task of selecting a dedicatee who exemplified the hard work and total dedi- cation it has taken for this Methodist college to become one of the finest Christian liberal arts col- leges in the nation today. Dr. Norton Jones, a member of the faculty since 1948, is a classic example of the hard work and dedi- cation. The 1974 Totem staff proudly dedicates the yearbook to Dr. Jones. Born in Augusta, Arkansas on Nov. 16, 1908, Dr. Jones attended Little Rock High School. He gradu- ated magna cum laude from Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., in 1928, then received his M.A. and Ph.D. from John Hopkins University in 1930 and 1932 respectively. Dr. Jones served his Assistantship at Johns Hopkins, obtained the Ford Foundation Fellowship at the University of California and Stanford University. He was a member ofGamma Alpha, Alpha Chi and the Society of Sigma Xi. Before coming to McMurry in 1948, Dr. Jones was professor and head of Chemistry Department at Ft. Lewis Branch ofColorado A8L1Vl College from 1933-48. The Many Faces of McMurry was staged twice, during the 1973 Northwest Texas Annual Conference and capping Founders' Day in April of 1974. Muriel Burress, of the speech department, and Miss Jewell Posey, retired faculty member, directed and wrote the script for the play. It was one of several events to help McM urry celebrate its Golden Anniversary. Through use of color slide projectors and live drama on the stage of Radford Auditorium the first 50 years of McMurry were relived in living color. 66 97 we started with one building gg 79 and now welcome t0j.w. huntphysical education center 'UQIQ 5 In K. gi 1 b 'ff W g Ayn' 6 ,.'l A 1 . , . rfyfrlk, Wx V, ', ,Jig - Q wk Wm-is V ii 1Aw'v ',Lg1.4s,. 523 1,1 v -vf.....-, V: ... 1 P . That is, one more play, baby, and keep it on the ground. The date was Sept. 15, 1973, and the score was McMurry IO, Panhandle State 6, with just 0:17 left on the clock at Shotwell Sta- dium. The Indians scored late in the game on a 16-yard pass play from Hobbs to wingback James Page. Aggressive defense in the form of gang tackling pavedthe way to a hard-fought '16-13 victory over Western New Mexico in a much-publicized game as Don Newsom and his brother, Ron, squared off against each other as oppos- ing coaches. In the picture above Gary Rayburn 4445 wraps up a Mustang quarterback while Jerry Arnold 1833, Gaylon Doan C783 and Mike ,Simpson 1791 close in to make the kill. The victory improved the season record to 2-and-l. Again, the clinching score came on a Lonnie Hobbs-to-James Page pass. SAL ANDRADE ON THE LGGSE Richard Smajstrla 1825 hauls in 12-yard pass from Lonnie Hobbs in Panhandle State game. Smajstrla caught six passes for a 16.3 yard game average. Jerry Arnold C833 is shown re- turning a pass interception against Panhandle State in a 10-6 victory. The Seymour sen- ior led the Indians in punt re- turns with l0 for 7l yards and was second in kickoff returns with an average of 19.4 yards per return. Arnold played the rover on defense and was cred- ited with 58 tackles in nine games. McMurry College football has always been noted for its aggressive defense, which has won national recognition over the years. The action above is an example. Kim is serving as McMurry College's eighth president during the school's Golden Anniversary. He has worked day and night, with the assistance of a capable de- velopment office, to balance a budget which has run in the red as have most small private institu- tions. His education reads a B.A. in Economics, M.B.A in General Business and Ph.D. in Econom- ics. When he accepted the presidency on June l, 1970, Dr. Kim said: I believe that the very funda- mental reason for the existence of McMurry College as a church-related institution is to serve not only the intellectual, physical, cultural, and vocational needs of the student body but also-very vitally--the spiritual development.
