ACTIVITIES TERRI HOWELL SECTION EDITOR Lines, Lines and More Lines at Registration Any visitor on McMurry’s campus could tell when registration started by the long lines and bewildered stu- dents. Since there was no pre-regis- tration for the fall semester, even the upper classmen had to go through the process of filling out forms, get- ting schedules arranged, and finally paying the bill. After registration, everyone could finally begin to unpack, organize their room, and meet some new friends. Soon the dorm room felt more like home and the days developed into a routine. Also during this time, the freshmen learned what the word slime meant. They began to experience odd re- quests from upper classmen such as carrying out McMurry’s traditions and the proper way to wear the maroon and white beannie. 16 17 4 Students Meet New Friends in Cafeteria and Dorms 18 19 22 A torchlight pep rally began the 1972 Homecoming ac- tivities. Early the next morning the opening ceremony and erection of Teepee Village occurred. Tours given to area school children added to the excitement of Homecoming. The musical variety production. A Night in Vaudeville , took the audience through the decades of the twenties to the sixties. During the coronation ceremonies following the musical. Peggy Johnson was named Reservation Princess and Barry Hoefer was named Chief McMurry The 1972 especially honored past members of the Chanters and past director Gypsy Ted Sullivan Wylie. Special guest of honor was Miss Janet Yazzie, reigning Miss Navajo The weekend was climaxed by the football victory over Austin College 23 26 4 Indian Traditions Displayed During Homecoming 28 For the second year in a row Theta Chi Lambda. McMurry women's social club, won the over all rat- ing at the annual sing-song. Sing-song is sponsored each year by T.I.P. women’s social club This year's theme. Love Makes the World Go Round gave the nine clubs entered and the freshmen a large selec- tion of songs from which to choose. Kiva social club won the men's division trophy for best choreogra phy. costumes and song. HEI and Pi Delta Phi |oined together and won the mixed division trophy. Delta Beta Epsilon won the girl's division trophy. 29 The play. Jabberwock . was inspired from “Jabber- wocky by Lewis Carroll and My Life and Hard Times by James Thurber. The play told the story of the James Thurber family. The role of Mary Agnes Thurber was double - cast with Susan Hackney and Terry Shambrook The set was designed by Don Hutchinson and Oran Shel- ley. 30 31 Holidays at McMurry MB 34 35 January Term Classes pro- vided an excellent opportunity for uniqueness. Some students learned techniques in playing chess while others visited a Navajo Reservation in New Mexi- co. Many students stayed on campus for their classes while some journeyed to Europe. One class that remained on campus was the study of the Irish novel- ist. James Joyce. The 1972-1973 College Series pro- grams brought many new faces to the McMurry campus. In February actress Paulene Myers presented a one-woman dramatization of 300 years of Black History. Also in Febru- ary Astronaut James Irwin told Mc- Murry students and faculty about his trip to the moon and its religious significance to him. The annual Wah Wahtaysee style show was presented as a spring college series program. The theme of the program was Those Were The Days.” Slides ac- companied the modeling of fashions from the 20's through the 1970's. Coach Hershel Kimbrell. head basketball coach at McMurry College since 1959. is the dedicatee of the 1973 TOTEM In his fourteen seasons here, he has won 181 games which makes him the winmngest coach in the school’s history He coached the wmningest team in the school s history in 1961-2 to a 24 5 record which gave them a berth at the Kansas City NAIA tournament Coach Kimbrell has been Athletic Director at McMurry since June 1. 1968 He was honored as runner-up Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year for the 1968-69 season and runner-up for District IV NAIA Coach of the Year for the 1972-73 season Before coming to McMurry College. Coach Kimbrell coached nine years at Garland High School as head basketball and assist ant coach in football. He won eight district titles in nine years Coach Kimbrell is a former cage star at McMurry from 1945 49 He set the school record with thirty-nine points against South western University in 1949. Coach Kimbrell received a Bachelor of Science degree in Phys- ical Education from McMurry in 1949 in 1949 and a masters from McMurry in 1960 He served two years in the Navy during World War II. He is married to he former Georgia Hams and has two children. Page s story is truly a remarkable one He came to McMurry as a quarterback. As a freshman he was a backup and as a sopho- more he directed the wishbone attack. Penny, a fluid motion 6-3 guard from Richardson did what no other sophomore had ever done at McMurry. He scored a record 590 points during the season, breaking the school mark of 588 set back in 1969-70 by another great guard. Randall Caussey. Penny, a sharpshooter who Coach Hershel Kim- brell calls the greatest shooter he has ever been associated with in 23 years of coaching, set two other school re- cords. for most field goals. He made 254 field goals out of 501 attempts He made second team all-Lone Star Con- ference with a 21.1 point per game av- erage and hit 50.7 per cent from the field. Penny made first team district IV of the NAIA and honorable mention all-American. Penny's top game came against Lubbock Christian College when he poured in a career high 35 points. Indians Fastbreak Through Tough Season The Indians enjoyed their first winning season m four years with a 15 and 13 record. Starting ex- tremely fast, the Tribe won their first five games, before falling to rugged Idaho State University in the first round of the Cowboy Classic in early De- cember The fifteen victories were the most by McMurry since the 1968-69 club went 18 and 9. The Indians set a new team record for most field goals made in one season with 906 and averaged 79.9 points per game. Defensively, the Indians had one of their finest campaigns with a 78.8 defensive average. The Indians went on another five-game winning streak in the Lone Star Confer- ence play by downing Angelo State twice. Tarle- ton State. East Texas State and Sul Ross. 105 The end of intercollegiate basketball in historic Indian Gym came on the night of February 26, 1973. Over the years, since its founding in 1927. Indian Gym has provided some exciting and rewarding moments for Indian cage fans. The biggest moment may have come some four years ago in February 1969. when the Indians upset No. 1 ranked Stephen F. Austin. 75-72. Known as 'Astrodome of West Texas or The Tenth Wonder of the World. Indian Gym will be put to rest, so to speak, with the Health and Physical Education Center ready for the 1973- 74 season. Two young athletes who played exciting ball for the Indians during their college careers were Joe Bob Brewster (No. 31) and Roger Case (No. 23). Both finished their careers in Indian Gym against East Texas State. 107 Indians Fare Well in Tough LSC In the Lone Star Conference, it has been the Sam Houston State-Stephen F. Austin league for some time now. In 1972-73 it was no 1 ranked Sam Houston roaring unde- feated into the national tournament. The Indians played with the best on occasions, as indicative of the narrow 68-66 loss to Sam Houston at Huntsville in the late stages of the Conference race. The Indians finished 8 and 10 and a new team record for most league wins in a row with five The Indians finished eight years of competition in the Lone Star Conference and will join the Tex- oma Athletic Conference next season. The Indians finished third in the Lone Star Con- ference field goal percentage at 48 1 Rick Penny made second team all-Lone Star Conference while Marc Case and Keith Sul- livan were honorable mention. Coach Hershel Kimbrell was runner-up in the balloting for NAIA District IV Coach of the year 108 110 Whitaker Leads in Rebounds in Keith Whitaker (No. 51) a 6-5 junior college transfer from Cisco and Cooper High finished as the Tribe's number three scorer with a 14.0 point game scoring average. Whitaker made second team All-City, as named by the Abilene Re- porter News. Whitaker led the Indians in rebounds with 241 and an 8.6 game average. Whitaker set a new school record with 25 re- bounds against Texas A l. Whitaker also was the teams’s top fieldgoal shooter with 52.3 per cent. Seniors Robinson and Hamilton Lead the Way for Indian T rack men Seniors Doug Robinson and Ricky Hamilton were the mainstays of the Indian track team for 1973 Robinson, a slender 5 - 10. 150 - pounder was one of 'he nation’s top milers. turning in a best time of 4 13.4 at the Border Olym- pics in Laredo in early March. Doug set a school record of 4 11.0 at the Border Olympics as a junior. Hamilton, a mus- cular 6-2. 185-pounder from Munday. ran a career best of 48.9 as a sophomore in the 440-yard dash. Hamilton also ran the 880 and a leg on the mile relay for four years. Both he and Robinson earned four letters. Robinson was hon- ored as Outstanding Track Athlete at the May AM-Sports Banquet. A promising rookie pro- spect. Kenneth Rose, broke a bone in his foot, and the mile relay had to regroup. Hamil- ton joined Jerry Arnold. Jerry Boles and Richard Smajstrla on the mile unit Robinson al- so ran when Coach Christo- pher wanted a lineup change. Top Weightman was senior Jerry Kunkel. a three - year letterman from Lamesa who threw the shot. Randy Roe- misch. a sophomore football star, also threw the shot and discus. Tommy Varner was the long and triple jump spe- cialist for the Indians His jumps improved with every meet Another rookie. Charles Allison, ran the 440 and also helped with depth on the mile relay. 112 TrackTeam Under Capable Coaching of James Christopher Over the years. McMurry has developed class track performers. Since the early 1960 s. the Indians have seen four athletes dominate their specialty at the NAIA indoor and outdoor meets. First there was Bill Miller, a long jumper from Wingate, who nearly made the 1964 Olympics with a brilliant leap of 26 6 3 4. He is presently track coach at the University of Texas. Then came David Bonds, a hurdler from Hamlin, and the 1966 NAIA intermediate title Another long jumper hit the scene in Freddie Fox of Colorado City, who won the 1967 outdoor championship The latest champion was Rickey Parris, a phenominal athlete who twice won the NAIA indoor and outdoor pole vaulting titles and still owns the meet records. Ark. 114 lib 116 Golf Team Hosts Intercollegiate Meet Golf returned to the intercollegiate level at Me Murry when Tommy Estes was hired in the summer of 1970 Estes quickly assembled a team, with the backbone being hefty Larry McNeely. probably the city's top golfer McNeely. a bruising 6-3. 245- pounder from Abilene Cooper, was twice named the school's Outstanding Golfer and averaged 73.5 strokes per round during his career at Mc- Murry. The 1972-73 club was young to say the least, with four freshmen joining McNeely Brother David came from Abilene High, while Bobby Gage and Don Hothan were recruited from Cooper Another freshman on the club was Ronnie Peoples, who played his high school golf a Abilne High and then went on a stint with Uncle Sam. The Indians com- peted for the District VIII championship of the NAIA at a meet in Houston on April 26-27 Rookie Don Hothan (ABOVE and Bobby Gage learned what college golf is about with a busy schedule dur mg their first season at McMurry Hothan averaged 79 8 per round and Gage 74 5 1 17 Intramurals— Important Part of College Life James Christopher. McMurry's head track coach and assistant in football, directed the 1972-73 boys' intramural program and Mrs. Betty Wilson directed the girls' program Boys and girls engaged in the busiest sched- ule ever with several sports being added to the agenda for the first time Alpha Sigma Chi demonstrated versatility by copping titles in football and basketball The staff- faculty assembled a representative squad in basketball and played Alpha Sig for the championship, but lost as Stan Coffman and Johnny Bailey led the way The boys par- ticipated in such sports as football, basket- ball. softball, volleyball and track Delta Beta won the girls' basketball title with Robbie Swenson and Vicki Varner lead- ing the way. Theta Chi's tennis team proved too strong for the rest of the field. Karen McCarson Volleyball Team Travels Extensively 1 Cheerleaders Work Hard for Athletes This year s cheerleaders worked hard in backing ihe McMurry Indians. They began the year by attending cheerleading school at SMU where they won numerous awards. They were responsible for Sliming as well as pep rallies for football and bas- ketball games. The six cheerleaders spent many hours each week preparing for games by planning the pep rallies, painting signs, and practicing their yells. This year the cheerleaders prepared the decorations for the Annual All-Sports Banquet, which were the best ever for the event. The McMur- ry cheerleaders for 1972-73 were Kent Young. Peggy Johnson. Pi Kappa Delta went o Texas Tech. North Texas State. Southwest Texas State and Topeka Kansas for tournaments this year. The trip to Kansas was earned by winning a number of points through participa tion in other tournaments. This was an honor to be invited to the Pi Kappa Delta Convention, for McMurry earned the trip by entering many different areas with only a minimal number of students. The interclubs set rush procedures for both women and men.
