On the Mc- Murry College campus it started as an ordinary windy fall day, but at noon it became a day we would never forget—our president was shot. We put our flag at half mast and then tried to comprehend the fact that our president was no longer named Kennedy. We now had President Johnson, who took the oath of office in a plane parked on a runway at Love Field in Dallas as he stood between Lady Bird Johnson and Jackie Kennedy, who wore a pink suit covered with blood stains from the assassinated president. Probably the only bright spot in that black day was the fact that our government is stable and we would go on being governed by the same laws, a fact that as Americans we were too shocked and too grieved to appreciate fully. Most of us lived through that historic weekend watch- ing live television coverage of scenes in Washington, D.C. and scenes from Dallas of a bereaved family of a Dallas ‘policeman who was killed as he looked for the assassin, and the murder of the accused assassin. Television coverage of John F. Kennedy's funeral brought the tragedy right into our living rooms. Prob- ably no family in history had so many people praying for its strength and comfort. For her courage and grace a first lady named Jackie” won a lasting first place in our hearts. 27 Exposure io Jine Z 'lrls In September Sherwood Suter's Art Department exposed us to an exhibition by Cyril, New York Artist. The widely- known bandmaster is listed in Who's Who in the Southwest and is a member of American Bandmasters Association. Under his direction the Indian musicians have become known for their showmanship and their specialty numbers. The band has entertained audiences in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Old Mexico, and Europe. On the Me- Murry campus the band nurtures school spirit and fosters a love for good music in the student body. Although members of the band are versatile musicians who play for football games, assemblies, and concerts, the most distinguished achieve- ment of this organization is that of being able to present a complete worship service in churches built around the theme Let Us Worship Through Music. dlCdJICarry Go Iecje Indian 3ancf OUT IN FRONT of the Indian Band this year arc drum major Jerry Lane of Panhandle and seven maidenettes. The choir has traveled thousands of miles, giving concerts to audiences in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Each year the Chanters take two tours—in the fall and in the spring. In addition to appearing as a group before churches and high schools throughout the area, separate sections and individual members often appear before service clubs and organizations in the Abilene area. They perform a complete church worship service through song. Another of the Chanters’ specialties is a program of secular and folk music, designed to appeal to school and civic audiences. Their concerts include numerous vocal solos and ensemble numbers. SECTION LEADERS Bob Winn, tenor; Regie Brown, Heasley, soprano; Karen Stricbel, alto. 1963-64 GAan ers Paul J. A. DcPaul University also conferred a master of music degree upon him in 1953 and he has since studied conducting in Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and has been a member of Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Choral Directors Association. He has been associated with summer theatre in Northshore Theatre near Chicago, church soloist and choir director of Grace Lutheran Church in Chicago, music director of St. Martin Church in Austin, music director of First Methodist Church in Galveston and choir director of Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. That smile is for real.” This first lady loves to get the mail, and she checks it first for a letter from daughter Pat. Like her husband, she has given most of her time to McMurry and the Methodist Church. She is a gracious hostess, a whiz at or- ganizing, and a homemaker that knows how to do those old- fashioned things like cook and sew and knit. Like her husband, she is extremely quick-witted, and like most wives she worries that he doesn't have more time for leisure. This couple is great in public life, but would never have trouble filling the hours if they ha'd more time for private life. Dr. Gordon R. Bennett, President of McMurry College Excerpt from an address delivered by Dr. Bennett to members of the Houston Chapter of the Ameri- can Institute of Banking and guests at a dinner meeting held in Houston this year: The hope of all mankind, whether he works behind an iron curtain, in a fishing boat off the coast of Japan, in a teller’s booth or behind a desk, rests in some type of dedication that is strictly his own spiritual interpretation of hope. Any one of us could have been born in different circumstances subjected to different influence, been heirs to misfortune and as a consequence enjoy none of the privileges that are ours in this luxurious setting tonight. Surely along with our time and our work some divine spirit has watched over us and guided us for some responsibility of destiny. Christians call him God. Black, red, white, yellow', whatever the color of skin, there was an origin, a beginning and some divine spirit created it, prepared it, timed it and placed it in space and said, 'These are my children, my sons and my daughters. Look after each other and care for each other and be ready when I come again for you.' As a layman, there is much I don’t understand but I find contentment in the thought that through the proper and unselfish use of my time and my talents in serving man, I will also serve God.” 136 dr. w. b. Early in the morning of Saturday, November 23, 1963, an honored and beloved member of the McMurry family laid down his work here with us that he might resume it on a higher plane. Bishop Angie Smith was right when he said that there is no such thing as a pessimistic Christian; and I think the thing that we most admired and remember about Dr. Hicks, was his vigorous optimism. With Teddy Roose- velt, he believed that fighting for the right is the greatest sport in the world. The old copybook maxim, death doth hide, but not divide, reminds us that our permanent residence is not here but that we are pilgrims looking for a city.” Thanks be to our Heavenly Father for the life of this great man who has been with us and for the assurance that reminds us that we shall have the opportunity to see again the teacher and friend who has gone on. —Lloyd D. Huff T)afler 7iacAanan “CBucA” Buck started to work for the McMurry Maintenance Department as the electrician shortly after moving here from Lampasscs in 1961. His employers have all had the utmost confidence in his ability as an outstanding worker, and elec- trician. He prided himself on a job well done and was willing to stay up all night when ever the need arose to finish his job well. In Lampasses Buck served as a deacon of the First Baptist Church. This was one man who would truly do anything for a friend. On Thursday, December 19, 1963, he died of a heart attack while doing his job. 147 —Laural Ann Dobbins 148 Representative U ice-CPresicfen t Secretary..... fPresicfent.... .....ffrecf Sfray .....Qoyie Qifes SAiriey Ricftey .
