The big story of the game was the awesome defensive struggle between two giant lines. The Indian defensive stars allowed the visiting Bulldogs only 51 yards rushing the entire game and only three first downs. Scoring for McMurry came from three touchdowns by quarterback Lee King, one by fullback Austin and four points after touchdown by Doug James. 74 GERVIS GALBRAITH DELBERT WYLIE ERNEST PARK GAYLON WOODARD LEE KING McMurry 28 Howard Payne 8 McMurry found revenge for last year's loss to Howard Payne by defeating the Yellow Jackets 28-8. Fullback Fred Austin gained 115 yards rushing—more than the entire Howard Payne backfield accumulated. JIM FITZGERALD FRED KIDWELL. JR. RAY CRUMPLER McMurry 0 Trinity 19 History almost repeated itself in San Antonio as the Trinity Tigers downed McMurry College by a 19-0 score. Trinity found McMurry's defensive weak spot early in the game and took full advantage. The Tribe's lack of pass defense was the big story as the hosts kept the air full of aerials, hitting on 14 of 32 for 217 yards and three touchdowns. 76 WINFRED SHIPP PAT KELLER WACO REYNOLDS McMurry 7 McMurry 13 New Mexico 35 Southwest Texas State 28 The New Mexico Aggies hammered home the point that the Aggies are ready to go big time as they plastered McMurry 35-7 behind the superb running of Preacher Pilot. McMurry's Indians drew first blood but it was short lived as the Aggies began their drive and accumulated an impressive 35 points. The Tribe's losing streak grew to three as the Indians watched its narrow first half lead, 13-7, destroyed in the opening seconds of the third quarter. In short order the Bobcats scored three touch- downs and three extra points. 77 BILLY WEST CLOVIS HALE RONNIE GREEN DON E. DAVIS LARRY MORRISON JAMES PRUETT McMurry 16 Texas Western 20 Victory eluded McMurry College's Indians as Lee King's would-be touchdown pass slipped through the fingers of Halfback Billy West in the closing seconds of a hard fought gome against the Texas Western Miners by a score of 20-16. The Tribe held a 13-7 lead at the intermission as halfbacks Donald Davis and Jim Densman sparked a two touchdown second qaurter. The Miners had taken a first quarter 7-0 lead. 78 JOHN THOMAS McMurry 23 Arlington State 22 Lee King and Donald Davis put together two sensational plays of 94 and 93 yards in the fourth quarter to power the McMurry Indians past Arlington State 23-22. Quarterback Lee King intercepted a Rebel pass on the Braves’ own six-yard line and raced 94 yards to send the Indians into a tie with the visiting Rebels. Doug James split the uprights in the try for extra points sending McMurry ahead for the first time in the game 15-14. Halfback Donald Davis' dazzling kickoff return late in the final period of play was good for 93 yards and another Tribe touchdown. King passed complete to Billy West in the end zone for the winning two points giving the Tribe 23 points for the afternoon. 79 BILL BAILEY DON MRAZ DOUG JAMES R. E. DUGAN LARRY MORRISON JIM DENSMAN McMurry 42 Tarleton State 8 McMurry ran wild against Tarleton State, whipping the Texans 42-8. It was McMurry's game all the way as Jim Densman, Lee King, Billy West and Fred Austin added points on the ground while the passing combinations of King to Davis and Mraz to Harrington clicked for 12 additional points. The running play of the game was the opening kickoff return of 90 yards by the Indians’ Jim Densman. WILLIAM GRISSOM THOMAS CASEY WAYNE GARNER McMurry 27 Hardin-Simmons 14 McMurry's Indians toppled the Hardin-Simmons' Cowboys 27-14 boosting the Warriors’ winning streak to three straight. The Warriors never trailed throughout the Cowboy-lndian battle and controlled the action except for two Cowboy touchdowns. The contest turned out to be a battle between McMurry's hard running ball carriers and the Cowboy's aerial attack, with the Tribe coming out on top. DURWOOD BOYD JERRY McLEOD DON W. DAVIS McMurry 33 ACC 28 MANLEY DENTON McMurry College’s Indians came out fighting in the battle for the collegiate championship of Abilene as the Warriors tamed Abilene Christian's Wildcats. 33-28, to spoil the Cats Homecoming. Quarterback Lee King sparked the Indians offensive efforts as he passed for 103 yards and toted the ball for another 75 yards. Fred Austin, who blasted his way for 75 yards in 22 carries, scored three times for the Indians—twice from one yard out and once from three yards away. King scored once on a 29-yard run and Densman. who had 46 yards on eight carries, hit pay dirt on a 14 yard scamper. Th? victory over ACC climaxed a succesful season for the Warriors in which they chalke-J up a 6-4 record.
