The words scholar and schol- arship have come to be not too well thought of on the campuses of many American colleges. A scholar in the true sense of the word is a ‘ man of letters. or a person of much learning, and scholarship is high attainment in literature or science or some other field of study. To be a student earnestly seeking to become a scholar, or striving to achieve scholarship is not altogether too rare, but by many, such an one is considered peculiar, and out of line. We recognize that there are other values of college experience and life beside intellectual pur- suit and do not think that they should be excluded from the cur- riculum. College students must live as well as learn to live. Yet in an institution of higher learn- ing. study, thought, the gathering of a large reservoir of information and distilling out of it judg- ments. and convictions, under- standing and wisdom is the par- ticular business of the college student. Every campus should have a definite atmosphere of studious- ness. of seeking for truth, and of becoming proficient in mental action. All students cannot be- come great scholars, but all can adopt and develop scholarly habits, and come to have a true appreciation of learning and erudition. It is not enough to become acquainted with what others have done and thought and perceived, but with this acquirement as a base, to blaze some new trail, to arrive at some new conclusion, to grasp some new truths, should be the determined ambition and purpose of every college student Emerson in his essay The American Scholar says of the scholar: He is the world's eye. He is the world s heart. He is - - - to communicate heroic sentiments, noble biographies, melodious verse, and the conclusions of history. Whatever oracles the human heart, in all emergencies, in all solemn hours has uttered - - - these he shall receive and impart. Whatsoever new verdict Reason pronounces - - - this he shall hear and promulgate.” What the world most needs today is trained men and women who can both see and feel the needs of humanity, and supply it with wisdom for the directing of its future course. Let us develop at McMurry College those attitudes and practices that will result in a sincere appreciation of scholarship and make of us all potential scholars. President's Message: DR. HAROLD G. COOKE, President.
