Dr. Harold G. Cooke, sixth president of McMurry College, first came to this institu- tion in January, 1943, and was formally in- augurated in September of that year. Sim- ultaneous with that inauguration. McMurry celebrated its twenty-first birthday, and launched out on a $1,750,000 building and endowment campaign. That project, which was conceived and planned entirely by Dr. Cooke, has already made vast progress. The beautiful Iris Graham Memorial Dining Hall was com- pleted in February. 1947, and the attractive President Hall for women was completed in the summer of that year. The Gold Star Memorial dormitory for men is rapidly near- ing completion, and numerous government buildings have been brought to the campus to accommodate the postwar influx of stu- dents. The student life center is now in process of reality, and shortly thereafter a fine arts DR. AND MRS. HAROLD G. COOKE . .. .. , , n building and a science hall are projected. In addition to initiating the building program, Dr. Cooke has secured several hundred thousand dollars in endowment, and has placed the college on a sound financial foun- dation. Through his untiring efforts the college has been able to not only launch whole- heartedly into a gigantic building program, but also to anchor its pecuniary affairs solidly, and plan for the future. During the five years that Dr. Cooke has presided at McMurry College, the institution has grown more than it had in the first twenty-one. Not only were the building and en- dowment programs successfully initiated, but numerous instructors were added to the faculty, and much needed equipment has been procured. Under the able guidance of Dr. Cooke, McMurry College is taking its place among the best colleges in the state.
