Hectic Holly-Days Third Street decorations are a familiar sight during the holiday season. The decorations, put up by the McMinnville Fire Department annually, are a welcome sign that the new year is approaching. MHS kept very busy this Christmas season. Even though there was no snow for the season, holiday spirits were still high. On Friday, December 20th, we celebrated with the traditional holiday assembly. The bands played and a special version of The Little Drummer Boy was performed by the newly formed percussion ensemble. The Twilighters and other choirs entertained us with several songs (even the student body chimed in for Frosty the Snowman). With sentiment and a little sadness, we bid farewell to Justin Sanson, an exchange student from Australia completing his year in the U.S. Saturday, the 21st, holiday celebrations continued as the girl-ask-boy Christmas Dance. “Hypertension”, a Portland-based band, played for the group during the 8:00 to 11:30 event. This year, the court was chosen by secret ballot as the couples entered the dance. Selected for this year’s Christmas court was: Freshmen, Tara Macy and Corey Rich, Sophomores, Carrie Irwin and Brett Kron, Juniors, Lisa Langsdorf and Brian Burdett, Seniors Karen Goodrich, Lorin Jones, Becky John- Terry Kester Santa inspects a photo of himself with a small child. Junior Class members spent vacation taking Polaroid snapshots of the Jolly Old Fellow. son, Scott Jackman, Queen Molly Hay and escort Willy Hughes. Most agreed that the dance was a success despite the lack of snow on the ground. Prior to the celebrations at Mac High, we took part in our annual canned food drive. Although this year’s drive wasn’t as successful as in past years, the high school still did its part in contributing to the needy. The Junior class was victorious in class competition during the drive with the Seniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen following respectively. Over 1,000 cans were collected for donation to charity. The Junior Class also kept quite busy during the holiday season. Many students passed time during their vacation sitting in the old Sears building on 3rd Street taking polaroid pictures of children on Santa’s lap. From 10:00 to 4:00 for about ten days, patient Juniors took turns sitting and waiting for children to come sit with Santa and parents anxious to have their adorable childs’ picture taken on the lap of the bearded stranger. Almost $350.00 was raised to help put on the Junior-Senior Prom in May. The FFA was just down the street from the Santa booth with their new live nativity scene at the U.S. National Bank parking lot. Live animals were on hand for the children to pet and mannequinns decorated the area dressed up as Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus. Music programs, canned food drives, tree sales, fund raisers, dances and general excitement make the Christmas season hectic at Mac High. But the two week break helps students to rejuvenate and prepare for the next 10 weeks before spring vacation. Tom Mallard
