Filled with excitement and fun things to do. Spirit Week was a tremendous success. The kick-off for the week was a Monday evening poster party at which each class entered a poster representing the motto, “Grizzlies Roar When They Smell Something Fishy.” Tuesday was declared “Hat Day.” and Wednesday was named ‘Ked and White Day.” At the evening noise parade a carefree crowd noisily marched through the streets of McMinnville to the downtown parking lot where the royal court was introduced. The day’s excitement ended with a sock hop. Following Thursday’s “Button Day,” a top-off for the lively week was Friday’s “Jersey Day,” when Queen Diane was presented to the student body. Humorous class skits and the knighting of team captains, Craig Winkler and Terry Otte, were highlights of the assembly. A win over Astoria Friday evening drew Grizzly roars which didn’t subside until after the traditional dance which honored this year the Class of 1966. nonoi Football players compete in turkey bump for the homecoming assembly in class competition. Learning at McMinnville High School takes place in many different settings with many different activities. The traditional lecture hall has given way to an informal atmosphere where discussion and research can take place. Many different laboratories provide the chance for students to test theories and carry out projects. Some classrooms provide the opportunity for students to practice—to develop the skills necessary for the upcoming game or concert, or to produce a newspaper or yearbook. Still other learning experiences take students out of the classroom to businesses in the community, to Trestle Glen. Yearbook photographers have roamed the halls of McMinnville High School in an attempt to capture the variety of settings and activities which contributed to the learning process in 1975. Their record serves in part as an answer to the question: What is a classroom ? 29 Discussion plays important role Whether in History or Communications Seminar, Anthropology, Ag Skills, or in foreign language classes, discussion was an important learning activity. This year students in Poetry I and II, Creative Writing, and Humanities had a special opportunity to discuss poetry with Poet-in-Residence Ralph Salisbury. In a new course. Stage II, students read and discussed plays and then traveled to Ashland where they attended performances of each of the plays. Psychology and Sociology students conducted interesting experiments which served as the basis for group discussions. Seniors Wendy Shirley, Bruce Schuchardt, James Mueller and Danae Yurgel presented paper at the Oregon Junior Academy of Science. These papers were the result of research conducted in Senior Science Seminar. Tim Craig used a research project in French IV as the topic for an original play, a year-long project for Communications Seminar. Two other Mac High students, Karen Rasmussen and Denise Fidel, received Associated Press coverage in local papers when they testified at the Oregon legislature. Their research contradicted the bill sponsored by Representative Stan Bunn who had invited them to research the measure and present their findings at the committee hearings. Making posters, movies, and slide shows, students in media classes practiced communications skills. Music students experienced the satisfaction of long hours of practice in many performances. 34 •practice ♦ (top left) Barbara Duddingand Nancy Gormley practice surveying in Ag. Productions class. The popular plant sale just in time for Mother’s Day attested to the year-long efforts of horticulture students in the greenhouse. Laboratories provided McMinnville students with innumerable experiences in auto mechanics, welding, electronics, chemistry, biology, physics, and agriculture. Journalists face realities of rising costs Financial difficulties plagued MHS’s publications which were faced this year with revenues which did not keep pace with rapidly rising costs. In an effort to keep within the limits of their budget, the Bruin staff cancelled five issues of the paper and stepped up their advertising campaign within the community. Mr. Boersma’s business classes, who undertook the project of selling yearbooks and obtaining advertisements, also were forced to extend the yearbook’s advertising campaign in order to obtain a minimum order of yearbooks. These students received credit for employment in many different areas within the community. The Work Experience program provided students with a chance to experiment with the world of work and gain experiences not available within the school building. This year, as always, students whose applications were accepted began preparation as counselors at the McMinnville Outdoor School with evening training sessions. Then, armed with camp gear, Mac High students boarded buses for Trestle Glen and returned a week later in a state of exhaustion. It was hard to tell who was more excited about the reunion held several weeks later—the counselors or their sixth grade friends. (top) Sixth graders look on as Danae Yurgel instructs on water flow. They ended the season, however, with a disappointing 2-3 league record and a 5-4 season record. Coach Don Mabee said. “We lost three games in the last minute and that’s the difference between a championship and a losing season.” For example. Forest Grove in the last few minutes pulled out a victory, costing Mac their first loss of the season. “This was the worst year for injuries I’ve had in my entire career,” continued Mr. Mabee. Of the original eleven offensive starters, nine missed one game or more, and half of the roster of 43 players missed one or more games due to injuries. Line Coach Perry Stubherfield summed up the season, “frustration—injuries-big plays. Unfortunately, this year most of the big plays came from the opposition.” Many of the Grizzlies put in outstanding performances this season. Ross Rutschman was named to the First Team All-State Defensive Squad, and he, along with Defensive Half-Back Craig Casteel, made First Team All-League Roster. Offensive Tackle Dick Oliver and Defensive Players John Abrams. Alan Sektnan, Steve Rissberger, and Craig Winkler made Second Team All-League Roster. Gaining All-League Honorable Mention was Quarterback Mike Mabee. In response to student interest, tryouts for a drill team were held in the spring of 1974. Many of those selected attended a drill team workshop in July in order to prepare for their halftime performances at football and basketball games. Adviser Nancy Miller commented that the Honey Bears “did really well in their first year.” The 1974-75 Varsity Rally was expanded from six to eight members. This larger squad— divided into two rotating squads —allowed the members to attend more athletic events than was previously possible. In addition to winning a spirit stick at Lewis and Clark Rally School, the squad members planned pep assemblies, made treats for the players, and sponsored a rummage sale to raise money for their uniforms. Senior Class Vice President Miss Kopf retires Miss Margrett Kopf, a coach and physical education teacher, retired at the close of the 1974-75 school year after forty years of service. A founder of the State Girls’ Athletic Association, Miss Kopf was instrumental in establishing a GAA handbook which has been used as a model throughout the nation. In 1969 she was honored by Oregon sportscasters with a merit award for outstanding service in girls’ athletics at the Hayward Awards Banquet. She is one of five women to have been honored with this Hayward Award. In addition to receiving awards from the Oregon Coaches Association and the Coast Valley League commemorating over 40 years in the coaching profession, Miss Kopf was honored by McMinnville High School with the establishment of The Margrett Kopf Award for Outstanding Girl Athlete. State GAA President Jenny Wiser, Mac High junior, presented the award to Miss Kopf at the awards assembly.
