Wth ANNIVERSARY ’62 McMINNVILLAN PUBLISHED BY YEARBOOK STAFF OF ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY McMinnville high school McMinnville, Oregon EDITOR — CHERYL SHU MW AY BUSINESS MGR. —AMBER MOSS' PHOTOGRAPHER — DALE EBELING ADVISOR —MR. Chris Gorlitz, our foreign exchange student from Germany, came to Mac High and fell in love with school life and the saxophone. Chris fitted in easily with the American way of life, but he still noticed differences in customs of our two countries. Chris, along with other foreign exchange students of this area, had a chance to describe differences in the school life in America with that of their native countries. Chris was surprised to find American students often relax; that they are not always on the go, as is the belief of many foreign peoples. Football was new to Chris, and so was the concession stand with its crowding, pushing customers. 5 50 YEARS OF PROGRESS Fifty years ago, the newly-formed Lincoln High School yearbook staff published the first record of school life, the Lincolnian. This year, 1962, we celebrate our fiftieth anniversary with a new yearbook name, the McMinnyillan. The first yearbook was quite different from the modern yearbook in the way it was published. The same general subjects were covered, but the presentation of them has been changed. The yearbook of 1912 was characterized by a great deal of literary content and few pictures. The modern yearbook tells a story in pictures, with few wordy explanations. The printing process of the book has also been revolutionized. The old way of half-tone zinc etching was complicated and costly. Lithography has now taken its place. To celebrate the fifty years of progress, the design and arrangement of the book have also been improved. Events ore arranged in the order they occurred through the year. The cover is designed with the first full-color picture ever used on a McMinnville High School yearbook. Of course, the greatest change of all since 1912 is in the school itself. Trends in educational philosophy and activities have changed nearly as much as the clothing styles have in fifty years. May we present our record of this fiftieth year. 6 A TABLE OF CONTENTS STUDENT LIFE..... 8 ADMINISTRATION .... 18 HIGHLIGHTS........30 ATHLETICS.........46 ORGANIZATIONS.....66 CLASSES...........98 ADVERTISING.........128 STUDENT LIFE 19X2 Chemistry — a world of test tubes, sparkling mixtures, and complicated symbols. Fifty years ago, few high schools offered adequate chemistry facilities for experimentation and research. Today, our laboratories are complete with modern supplies and chemicals. But chemistry isn't the only science that has advanced. Biology, a course required of all sophomores, is being modernized by an experimental nation-wide program. The regular senior college preparatory English course is being taught to a specially-selected group of juniors. Also, a special math analysis program is being taken by junior and senior students. These are only a few of the reasons for which McMinnville High School is praised for its academic program, and it seems fitting that these new programs were started fifty years after the first record was printed of our school. As President of the Associated Student Body, John Fuller must preside at all Student Body meetings, all assemblies and other various activities. He does an excellent job. The Student Body Officers have the responsibility of running the school. The faculty guides and directs school activities as well as the academic program. The teachers also help students choose courses and careers best suited to their abilities and interests. Through the years, new techniques have been developed to improve instruction. Rapid advances have been made in the fields of counseling and languages. Today every school has a modern counseling center with increased guidance services. For the first time, our school's language students can benefit by a new language laboratory. Our administration continually works for improvement as advances are made and strives to incorporate them into our system. I jUVU !«««' SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOL DISTRICT 40 Mr. Fred J. All events other than the regular academic program and athletics are remembered as the highlights of a year. Fifty years ago, school life was usually connected either directly or indirectly with the learning process. Activities were often organized to supplement school courses. Today we realize that a change from the daily routine is beneficial and necessary. Much effort is given to bringing distinguished speakers who often tell of ways of life or thinking that we are not familiar with. Fine music adds to the cultural education of the students. Of course, the annual school dances ore anticipated and attended with great enthusiasm, and are considered big events of the year. One begins to realize as he reflects over highlights that school life is the whole life for many students. Queen Patty Hay with her flower girl, Marsha Colvin; crown bearer, Wayne Huston. For the third year in a row the TYV Jamboree was held here. THESE VARIED ACTIVITIES KEEP STUDENT The Old Man and The Sea was the book reviewed by Dr. Hoyle. Seniors have been the best since the beginning of time. Doug's always on hand when needed . . . for fighting fires? The delightful operetta, Hansel and Gretel, starring Pam Patrick, Dennis Saunders, Judy Harry, was presented by the choir. INTEREST CENTERED AROUND SCHOOL LIFE Colorful mou-mous were shown and modeled by the Sophomore Home Ec. class. Marilyn Berry is pictured above. Raincoats for Rain-dears was the theme used by the Senior Home Ec. class. Mary McKay models her raincoat. A talent show was sponsored by the M Club to collect canned foods for Christmas baskets, which were distributed to underprivileged citizens in our community. Among the many students participating in the talent show were these Juniors, presenting an Oakie skit. The girls league added many Christmas decorations to brighten the school during the holiday season. c- • fe. m Mistletoe Magic was headed by General Chairmen Shirley Hermans, Sally Granger, John Buller, and Gary Brooks. A kiss following her coronation at the Christmas dance was given to Miss Holiday by — you know who. John Keen and Nancy Leonard were among the many couples who attended the spring dance. Its clever Parisian decorations created a light and gay atmosphere. LA PETITE PARIS” Delicate petite fours with punch were enjoyed by Mark Temple, Linda Hantze, Denny Wortman and Noreen Davis. As the two old ladies who lived upstairs, they added spice and humor. Denny Wortman and Kay Johnson, playing the leading parts, practice their lines in rehearsals for the play. But Frank won't be home until next summer, cried Polly (Vici Bergreen) to her parents during the performance of this pre-Christmas play. Mr. Baxter, the Scrooge of the play, finally gained the spirit of Christmas in the end. 40 The cast for the senior play included, left to right: Fuller, Len Lundgren, Cheryl Shumway, Susan Vickye Walker, Linda Earl, Kitty O'Malley, Bruce Helser, Dale Ebling, Ann Warmington, Lana La- Burcham, Weston Heringer, Kent Savage, John Voie, and Judi Harry, and Cecil Staats, seated. ! LIFE WITH FATHER Oooooh, that gooey grease paint! All the characters in the play received this same treatment. 41 The Roseburg Choir, in a exchange assembly, were the talk of the school for weeks after their tremendous performance. What's the center of attraction of these natives? Why, they are brewing their supper — juicy sophomores and tasty juniors. A new asset was added to the Spring Style Show — boys! Although a little bashful, the boys made terrific models. The Style Show was a big success this year. Joanne Sondenaa is shown modeling a casual outfit. All clothing was loaned to the models by downtown stores. 42 Bye Bye Blackbird was among the many songs sung by the choir at the annual Spring Concert. General chairmen pictured below with their dates were Jan Whitney and Tom Shipley. The beautiful decorations created a misty Hawaiian atmosphere. This prom was truly a credit to the Junior Class. MOON- LIGHT OVER HAWAII Miss Kathy Dillin, pictured with her date, was selected as queen of the Junior-Senior prom by the Junior Class. Happily smiling, Kathy made a lovely queen. Where would you like to travel this summer? was the question asked Mary Mead, Neal Huston, and Doug Cushing. They were the final candidates for the American Field'Service summer program abroad. Chris Gorlitz, exchange student from Germany, mastered the saxophone during his stay at Mac Hi. He lived with the Bennett family. Chris and his American brother, Milt, are both very musical. AFS STUDENTS EXCHANGE CULTURES Pam Bladine, foreign exchange student to Brazil last summer, is showing her souvenirs which she collected during her visit. She is about to play one of the albums she brought home with her. Lands from afar are represented by these students in the A.F.S. program of this district. Pam Bladine at the far right was narrator for an interesting assembly in which each student told about his country. Athletics 1912 Athletics brings to mind pep assemblies, state tournaments, and lots of school spirit. But it is actually a wide term covering football, swimming, basketball, wrestling, tennis, golf, track, and baseball. Mac High students had reason to be proud of their athletic teams this year. For instance, McMinnville cdme in second in the TYV League in football, and the basketball team was first in the league. At the state A-l Basketball Tournament, McMinnville gained seventh place, losing to South Salem in the final contest for fourth. Winning teams come and go, and we feel fortunate to have had them this year; however, we know that we gain much in inter-school competition besides the recognition of first or second place. The athletic program tends to draw a school closer together in the competitive spirit. Also, valuable lessons in sportsmanship are learned by all students. ROW ONE: E. Mondigo, S. Holmes, S. The 1961 Grizzly football season was a year of glory for the players and coaches. The Grizzlies placed second, a half game behind Tillamook, that they beat 20 to 0. The Grizzlies lost two games in a row to Newberg and Tigard. After that they never regained first place. Among other honors John Buller and Cliff Probasco received honorable mention on the N.H.S. Despite this record, the Mermaids displayed promising talent in Sophomores Francis Dulaney, and Anna Kay Anderson who finished 1-2 in the individual scoring race this season. Furthermore, Kopf will have three-year letterman Amber Moss, and a good representation from the Sophomore and Ninth Grade classes to help out next year. Although there are only three seniors on the team this year, Coach Kopf will regret losing them, especially Judy McKenzie, who garnered her fourth varsity letter this year. As a climax to the season, backstroker, Francis Dulaney, and the relay team composed of: Judy McKenzie, Anna Kay Anderson, Gail Martin, Luana Graham, placed as finalists in the 1962 Girls' State Swim Meet. They captured 2nd in District Two with a 7-1 record. Also, they had a 3-0 non-district record. Their only loss coming at the hands of the powerful Beaverton team which went on to take the State crown. Anderson expects a good coming year, although he will lose Copt. Jerry Larson, a back-stroke specialist who was undefeated in his first seven races in the 100 yard backstroke. Also he will lose Mike Cellers in the sprints and all around Carl (handy man) Anderson, who can swim any race. TOM SHIPLEY takes final breath before winning in the individual medley. BEST EVER” CAMPAIGN A new star was discovered this year in Daryl McKenzie, who came on strong late in the season to set school records in the 50 and 100 yard backstroke. This year, for the first time, a diving team was formed. The team consisted of Jim Cline, Jerry Burgess and Bob Barton, all but the latter will be returning next year. Steve Holmes, Tom Shipley, and John Troian always proved their worth in the meets they participated in and will be counted on greatly next year. Mac High, as can be shown at home meets, is very proud of its outstanding swimming program. DIVER JIM CLINE shows winning form at his speciality, the jack-knife. Three sport star John Buller shows his spring, speed, and coordination that helped the Bruins defeat Newberg. John was given an honorable mention rating for his fine performance in the T.Y.V. league. Mgr. John Fuller, Mark Temple, Randy Kline, Gary Parnell, Stan Van- Arsdale, Jack Morrison. Terry Durham scores on an easy lay-in to put the Bruins ahead for good in the Dallas game. GRIZZLY BEARS WIN TYV The McMinnville Grizzlies saw one of the best basketball teams ever produced here. This year the Grizzlies had everything that any coach could ask for. They were willing to and always played aggressive ball besides having a complete reserve team sitting on the bench. In the last game of the first half round, the Grizzlies met their arch rivals, Newberg, both having 9-0 records, and arose victorious. The second game against Newberg saw McMinnville win to force Newberg into a second place play-off with Tillamook for a berth in the State Tournament. TITLE WITH 16-2 RECORD Jack Moorison, 3rd in T.Y.V. scoring race, gives Tillamook fits with his scoring ability. Here, Moorison uses his height to his advantage in grabbing this rebound. A midseason let-down saw the Grizzlies lose to Forest Grove. They came back in championship form to beat West Linn in the next game. The Bears were stopped for the second and last time by a fired-up Tigard outfit, 56-55, in a game that was not decided until the last shot. With the State Tournament in sight the Grizzlies caught fire and could not be stopped. The bears wrapped up the T.Y.V. title in the last five games, and a first place berth to the State Tournament. SENDS DELEGATES TO KANSAS CITY The purpose of the Future Farmers of America is to promote and satisfy interest in agriculture. The Mac High Chapter was very active this year, participating in many activities. These activities included co-sponsoring the Spring Dance with the Future Homemakers of America, planning the annual F.F.A. Banquet, the F.H.A.-F.F.A. initiation, the F.F.A.-F.H.A. annual picnic, and many special individual projects. Mr. Patrick is the advisor of this group of boys. 90 Andrea Bristol and Jeff Juenemann were co-chairmen of the Spring Dance held in March. Nancy Crossgrove and Shirley Hermans lead Vickie House through a pathway of worms at the annual F.H.A., F.F.A. initiation. John Rossner, Jeff Juenemann, and Tim Engle traveled to Kansas City, Missouri to attend the National F.F.A. convention. The Future Homemakers of America face the future with warm courage and high hope. The purpose of the Future Homemakers of America is to develop homemaking interests and abilities in our high school girls. It guides each girl as she works toward the goal of improved personal, family and community living. The F.H.A. also serves as service club to the school and community. Throughout the year the F.H.A., is frequently called upon to provide refreshments for and serve at various teas. They also have several traditional activities throughout the year which include: serving at the F.F.A. banquet in the fall, preparing a style show and tea, putting on the spring dance with the F.F.A., and finally, taking a part in the Mothers' tea and installation in May. The F.H.A. this year was an extremely active and enthusiastic group that was continually involved in some kind of activity within the school. 91 ROW ONE: Mrs. Wode, advisor; M. McKoy L. Earl, A. BOYS' FEDERATION HOSTS GOV. MARK HATFIELD One of their b.est meetings of the year was when Governor Mark Hatfield spoke to the student body in the fall. The Boys' Federation, with Mr. Baisch at the head, carried out several worthwhile projects this year. Among the most successful was the Toy Drive for needy children at Christmas. This was co-sponsored with the Girls' League. The annual Senior Boys vs. Faculty basketball game was again a big success. In the spring, the Dad-Son Night affair brought out a huge crowd. Nine boys were selected, as Boys of the Month and a Boy of the Year was again the climax of the year. Service is the feature of the Boys' Federation and many boys served various organizations and the school throughout the year. MANY SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Jan Whitney polishes Ron Sterrett's shoes as Rich Sterrett looks on during the annual Twirp week activities. The Girls league, advised by Mrs. Gertrude Buller, is on organization of all the girls in school. Its purpose is to offer girls a means of fostering and promoting the activities which mean the most to them in their school life; to promote friendship among the girls of all classes; and to develop leaders as well as followers. Some of the Girls' Leogue assemblies in the past year included a visit from the Runner-up to Miss Oregon, Miss Julie Parker; also the Girls' League and Boys' Federation were privileged enough to hove as a guest speaker. Governor Mark Hatfield. Linda Carlson, a McMinnville High School student, who traveled through Europe lost summer, showed her slides and related her experiences ot one Girls' League assembly. At another of the Girls' League assemblies Pam Bladine, the American Foreign Exchange student to Brazil from Mac High School presented an interesting account of her experiences. The girls entertoined their fathers ot the annual Dad-Daughter Date Night. The fathers were guests at a ham dinner and then they, along with their daughters, attended the basketball game. Thirty girls and ten boys took part in the annual spring style show. The theme of the style show was Fascinating Fashions. Some of the highlights of the twirp week held in Morch, included a clash day, blue day, and a bow day. Each class sits in a certain section at assemblies, and they compete with each other in pep assemblies for the best skit. At the end of the year, a trophy is awarded to the class winning the most-pep assemblies. It has been found that a project will be best carried out if there is class competition connected with it. This idea is used for toy drives, clothing drives, and selling tickets for various functions. There are many times, though, when school feeling is stronger than class loyalty, and the students in all classes work together well. They are always willing to help each other out if necessary. When graduation night, the culmination of four activity-packed memorable school years, is finally reached by the senior class, the other classes move a step closer to their goal. V The combined efforts of the Grizzly team, the Rally Squad, and the student support made possible an exciting and profitable trip to the State Tournament. The pensive faces of the members of the student body show their concern in the forthcoming elections of the '62-'63 Rally Squad.
