THE Karen Nickell, Editor Dennis Crow, Business Mgr. I960 LINCOLNIAN Published by the Associated Student Body Jim Goff, Photographer Mr. Harry Dawson, Advis TVTrlVTinnville 1-Ticrh Sri. McMinnville, Oregon Lincoln High School Was Built in 1910 . . . The original high school building was a frame structure located near the present Cook elementary school. Four floors of this building have seen extensive use during the past 50 years. The top floor was condemned by the fire marshal in 1948; the third floor received fire warnings in 1955 and again in 1958. It has been used during the past two years because of increased enrollment. and Grew . . . The gymnasium-auditorium building was added in the 1920’s. This building was used for all basketball games from 1928 until 1948 when the McMinnville Armory was rented for games. The Armory was used until 1956 when the new Junior High School gym was finished. This gym has been used for games ever since. The stage has been the setting for many fine dramatic and musical productions over the years. The rooms on the right were added in 1954 and include a chorus room, bandroom, and two classrooms. District Plans Move of High School and Grew . . . The vocational building was built in 1939 and included ag. shops, an industrial arts shop, home economics, business education, and a science lab. The four rooms on the right of the entrance were added in 1948. With an ever increasing enrollment, the once-adequate facilities of McMinnville High became inadequate, overcrowded, and outmoded. The picture above, left, shows the crowded conditions of the hallways as the students change classes. Another hindrance is the lack of facilities in many classes. Kay Benedict, above, right, is shown using the one sink that has to accommodate the entire biology department. Because of too few classrooms to accommodate Mac Hi’s many students, many classrooms must be used for several classes. This creates a problem of storage for the supplies and equipment that are used in these classes. Below, left, Larry Welch is working on his science fair project for advanced biology. This particular classroom is used for advanced biology, all art courses, and algebra. Another disadvantage of the present school is the inadequate space for lunchroom facilities. Below, right, is an example of the lunch line which forms each day, filling the hallway and blocking the stairs. 3 r ma, i Mr. Bob Church, Dad s Club treasurer, and Mr. Sid Huwaldt, president, listen as Mr. Morgan carries on a discussion of the proposals of the Citizens’ Advisory Committee at the regular Dad’s Club breakfast meeting. The high school’s Dad's Club undertook a study of the district’s educational program. The outcome of this study was the Citizens Advisory Committee, composed of Dad’s Club members and other school patrons. This committee, headed by Mr. Robert Morgan as chairman, made recommendations to the board of education for a building program to meet the needs of our schools. The official action of the board was to present to the voters of the district a bond issue which would: move the high school to Consideration by the Board of Education of the recommendations of the committee became the order of business at this luncheon meeting of the board. The school clerks of the election are shown at the Ar- Im mory where the school patrons approved the bond issue. K the present junior high school, with the addition of classrooms, science wing, shops and music rooms; renew the old part of the high school building and convert it to junior high use; build a multi-purpose room at Adams elementary school and build a new elementary school. The new school will be ready for use in the fall. The long history of the present building as a high school ended with the graduation of the class of 1960, but the history of the new “Mac Hi” is just beginning. 4 Table of Contents Administration........................................6 Classes..............................................22 Organizations........................................46 Highlights...........................................72 School Sports........................................84 Index...............................................103 Advertizing . .106 Mr. Fred Patton, superintendent of School District No. 40, has been with McMinnville Public Schools since 1950. He came from the city of La Grande. Through his nine years of administration our school system has increased its educational program for our expanding community. Mrs. Helen Green, clerk for District No. 40, keeps the records in top shape. 8 Our board of education is composed of five members who are elected by the voters of School District No. 40. They have been extremely busy this year making many important decisions. Besides determining school policies, choosing our educational staff, and determining what our educational program should be, they had the very important task this year of expanding the building program. This will include the addition of two classroom wings and music and shop facilities to the present junior high to meet the needs of a growing high school, the remodeling of the present high school building to meet the needs of a junior high and the construction of a multi-purpose room at Adams elementary school besides the erecting of a new elementary school. Seniors Finish Year in Old Building The Senior class of 1960 has proven to be an outstanding class during their four years of high school. This class had many exceptional students that will be leaders in the future. Included in their class were some of the most outstanding students in scholarship, athletics, and leadership that have graduated from McMinnville. The students of 1960 will be the last to finish their senior year in the old high school building. Next year will mark the opening of a new high school. The Seniors chose as their colors Silver and Blue and for their flower the Rose. The class gift was a painting of a grizzly bear on the wall of the new high school gym. The class motto was “Those who don’t advance fall behind.” RICHARD ADAMS LAWRENCE ANDERSON SANDY BALLARD RUTH BARKER MARY BARRETT ELDON BEASLEY WILLIAM BERNARDS BOB BJERKE CAROL BOERSMA BARBARA BOWERS SALLY BROTHERTON JOY BURCHAM JACK BUSHNELL REX CATT AGNES CHEGWYN DENIS CROW WANDA DANIELS CAROL DANLEY JOHN DASHNEY DON DAVIS RON DAVISON DARLENE DICKINSON ED DOLAN JOHN DULANEY JAMES EARL LAVERNE EGGERT SONDRA LEE ELLER ARTHUR ENGEN LIONEL ENGLE BILL EVERS PHYLLIS FISHER SANDY FLANIGAN MILTON FORELL THOMAS GALLAGHER JAMES GOFF BILL GOOD JOY GOSS PETER GRANGER DORTHIE GRAVES KENNETH GROVES LARRY HALVORSON PETIE JO HAMILTON JUANITA HAY GARY HERING JANICE HERRING LARRY HERRON ALVIN HIEB JOHN HINRICHS DON HOLMES PENNY HONN RICHARD HORNER TERRY HORTON JUDY HOWARD JAMES HUBER CYNTHIA HUSTON DAVID JACKSON KURT JEDAN MARLENE JOHNSON CAROL JONES RICHARD KAISER NAOMI KESTER JEFF KIZER SARA KROFIN LYNDEN LAIRD GLENDA LANDAUER FRED LARSON MARY KUKURAL LARRY LAVOIE MARGERY LEDGERWOOD GARY LEWIS VERONAS LINDEROTH RICHARD LOFTON KEN LUSE DOROTHY MANNING RICHARD MENEFEE CARL MENKEL NAOMI MICHAEL JULIANN MOCK CLAIRE MILLER DAVID MORRIS EMILY MILLER BETTY MOSIMAN JERRY MILTON PETE McGILLIVRAY NANCY McKIMENS GWEN NETHERDA KAREN NEUSCHWANGER KAREN NICKELL KAYNICCOLLS ROGER NIEHUS BENNY OLERUD SHIRLEY OLSON PATTY O’MALLY TOM OTTINGER MARSHA PARKS HAROLD PATTON LESLIE PAYNE WILMA POAGE BONNIE PODLECK DOUG RASMUSSEN SUE RASMUSSEN NORMAN RUSSELL SUE SAVAGE JIMMIE SCHMAUDER PHILLIP SCHMIEDEL JUDY SCHMITZ RICHARD SHROEDER ROBERT SHAKLEE ROBERTA SHAKLEE JOAN SHAW GARY SIPP MICHAEL SKELLEY MIKE SMITH MELANIE SPONSEL DON STRAYER JON SEWARD DICK TRUDO RON TRUDO BILL VANDEHEY JANE VANECEK ALICE VINTON FRANK WEBSTER LARRY WELCH ROBERTA WHEAT JOHNWILGERS JERRY WILKISON RONALD WOLF LINDA YORK Outstanding Seniors Win Awards GOLD SEAL WINNERS.
