Although Mr. Conaway is always busy, he finds time to know each student individually and to discuss their personal problems with them. Vocal Music. 11 The Associated Student Body Officers THE ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY OFFICERS of McMinnville High School are: Secretary, Diana Dawson; President, Gordon Hall; Treasurer, Mattie Granger; Activities Chairman, Tom Worell; Vice President Mike Mattecheck. 12 THE GOVERNING ORGANIZATION of McMinnville High School is the Student Council, which convenes every two weeks to decide upon important student body business. The members include, ROW ONE: Mike Mattecheck, Mattie Granger, Diana Dawson, Gordon Hall. ROW TWO: Roy Gill, Linda Sauter, Amy Schroeder, Mary Lou Krieger. ROW THREE: Norma Christenson, Steve Spiller, Jim Hay, Nancy McKimens, Sandra Flanigan, Juanita Hay, Dorothy Neuschwanger. ROW FOUR: Larry Peterson, Tom Gallagher, Don Strayer, Mike Powell, Vinnie Mekkers, Mitchel Rhose, John Dulaney, Jeannie Fryer, Arlene Heringer. PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENT BODY, Gordon Hall, Introduces the A.S.B. presidential candidates for next year. 13 RELIABLE BUS DRIVERS moke the doily routes transporting students to and from school. THE CAFETERIA COOKS, Mrs. Goldie Collins, Mrs. Mabel Swanson, and Mrs. Carol Hartzell, prepare and serve hot lunches for the students each doy. THE CUSTODIAN STAFF, Mr. Albert Nelson, Mr. Ernest Johnson, Mr. Arlo Oleson, and Mr. Milo Oowlthorp keep the school neat and clean throughout the school year. 14 Students spend at least six hours a day in classrooms at Mac High. Above, the cameraman snapped the shutter as one lafe-comer tried to slip info the class unnoticed. Seniors THE SENIOR CLASS of 1958 has proven itself to be an outstanding class during the past four years in high school. This class had many exceptional students that will be the leaders of the future. Twelve students were chosen by the senior class for their service and activities in their four years of high school. These students are pictured on the following pages. The seniors have proved their ability as a team, and won second place in the March of Dimes competition. There were many seniors who won scholarships this year. Top athletic students on the football and basketball teams helped get our team into state play-offs. Mr. Greiner and Mrs. Six, the class advisors, did an outstanding job by encouraging and guiding the senior class to work as a body. The class officers were Charlotte Miller, Treasurer, Scott Compton, President, Yvonne Lofton, Secretary, Gary Kin-ion, Sergeant-at-Arms, and Mike Flanigan, vice President. As their flower the seniors chose the white orchid. Their motto was, We have crossed the bay; the ocean lies ahead. As their gift, the seniors left a lighted flagpole for the football field. 16 GORDON HALL Gordon served os A.S.B. president and was recognized os one of the top FFA boys in the state. He has won many honors for his school through FFA. MIKE MATTECHECK As A.S.B. vice-president, Mike brought many interesting assemblies to Mac High. Whenever there was work to be done, Mike was ready to give able assistance. She will always be remembered for the honor she brought to her school as Miss Yamhill County. CONNIE HOWARD Whenever there was a Queen, Connie was chosen. Her poise and personality have won her a place in the hearts of Mac Hiers. DIANA DAWSON A quiet girl with lots of charm served on many committees and spent many hours working on the student body minutes. Di was chosen as our D.A.R. representative. He received the coveted Robbin's Memorial for his good sportsmanship. LARRY PETERSON Larry was noted for his outstanding athletic ability. He was elected on the T.Y.V. all-star football, basketball, ond baseball teams. JEFF DURHAM Athletically, Jeff was tops. He was outstanding in any athletic activity that he undertook. His cheerful smile made friends for him wherever he went. AMY SCHROEDER Amy was always a reliable member of the senior class. She served on the Rally Squad and handled any job given her quietly and efficiently. The theme of the Prom this year was Under the Sea. Mr. Lee and Mr. Mabee, class advisors contributed a great deal to the success of the Prom and all the other junior activities. The juniors also sponsored the Homecom- ing dance and conducted the student body elections, which were run very efficiently by the juniors. The Freshman class started the year off by winning first place in the March of Dimes competition, and then first place in the Pep Rally competition. Many new classes were also added, one of which was the second year biology course. In the picture, Joan Hight and Joan Strayer are shown in the process of disecting a cat. 41 MISS ETHEL HAMBLIN admired a birthday cake presented to her by her English class. After many years on the faculty at Mac High, Miss Hamblin looks forward to retirement and leisure activities. MARJORIE LEDGERWOOD conferred with Miss Hamblin about an English composition she had written. Sophomore English has been the major teaching assignment of Miss Hamblin for a number of years. FRENCH STUDENTS worked on translations as Miss Hamblin gave approval. This was the first class of French at Mac High for several years, but Spanish has been taught each year. 42 HIGH SCHOOL MATH begins with Algebra for many Mac High students. Here Mike Keller, Jim Church, and Sid Huwaldt seemed to be enjoying their work in Algebra. MISS SHOWALTER'S LATIN students were engaged in Latin grammar exercises as this photo was snapped. Latin has always been a popular language course at Mac High. SPEECH TRAINING is an integral part of the language arts program at Mac High. Here Lanny Phelps is giving an explanatory talk as part of his Public Speaking work. 43 BUSINESS EDUCATION prepares graduates of Mac High to accept positions in the community where their skill in typing, shorthand, business machines, and bookkeeping enable them to perform valuable services for their employers. Bob Laune worked on an assignment in letter-writing. THE LANGUAGE ARTS program at Mac High offers four years of English, Public Speaking, Journalism, Latin, Spanish, and French. Students become well-grounded in English composition, as well as acquainted with American and English literature. Students here read and evaluated a literature assignment. FIRST YEAR ENGLISH stresses grammar, sentence structure, paragraph writing, as well as reading and appreciation of Literature. Miss Gill worked with Mike Keller diagramming a sentence to find its grammatical structure. 44 THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT at McMinnville High School is designed to prepare those students who are going on to college with a strong background of grammar and composition and those going into business and trades with English usage, spelling, and vocabulary. Cliff Brotherton worked on a grammar exercise in Junior English. PUBLICATION of the McMinnvillan, the high school paper, gives students an opportunity to get journalistic experience in actural news writing and publishing. Mr. Lewis, paper advisor, conferred with JoAnn Kerr concerning a news story as Dorothy Niccolls looked up a word in the dictionary. THE LINCOLNIAN, McMinnville High School yearbook, is a pictoral record of the year of school and all its students, their class work, organizations, social events, and athletic contests. The job of compiling and editing the yearbook falls on the staff, shown here working on layout, caption-writing and identification. 45 HOMEMAKING COURSES are popular with Mac High girls. Many and varied sports are offered to the athletes of Mac High in both the major and minor divisions. Above, ball players watch tensely as a McMinnville player trys for the hoop. TOM MILLER, scrappy senior quarterback, was named most inspirational player by a vote of his teammates and was awarded the Robbin's Memorial Trophy. COACH DON MABEE'S McMinnville high school football squad marched to its third successive T.Y.V. league grid crown last fall, and in doing so, set a new loop record for consecutive wins. The Grizzlies posted an unblemished 7—0 league record and ran their winning streak to 25 straight. During the season the Bruins racked up nine players on the annual T.Y.V. League all-star squad, which announced at a league banquet held at Memorial grade school. Jeff Durham, Gary Ritchie, Don Carlson, Larry Petersen, Roy Gill draw first-team berths, while Gary Bracelin, Mike Flanigan, Wally Mek-kers, and Tom Buckley received honorable mention selections. Ritchie and Gill were both repeaters from the 1956 season. Three players gained mention on the all-state teams. Along with classwork and homework, the students and faculty devote their time to dances, parties, drives, elections, and all the other activities which make up the high school year. The picture was taken at the Spring Dance, one of the important spring functions, which was sponsored this year by the FHA and the FFA. HREE anxiously watched the homecom-They are: assistant coach Mr. Bender, i Mr. Baisch, and head coach Mr. QUEEN CONNIE I reigned over the 1957 homecoming activities. The homecoming court was introduced and the queen was crowned during the dance, following the game. THE 1957 HOMECOMING COURT was presented to the crowd at halftime during the McMinnville and Oregon City game. Amy Schroeder was holding a geiger counter, while she participated in an experiment with Mr. Allen. JERRY WAYNE, A Hollywood entertainer, congratulated Sandy Ballard after the honor of Miss Valentine was bestowed upon her. SIG UNANDER, state treasurer, spoke to Mac High students Sandy was elected by public ballot. at the February National Honor Society assembly. 88 THE CHRISTMAS TEA, sponsored by the FHA, wos a get-together for the teachers during December. Entertainment was presented by the Charms, girls' trio, and the Brass Quartet. Mrs. Cowlthorpe, Mrs. Six, Miss Crosby and Miss Gill were served coffee and cookies by the girls. CONNIE HOWARD was selected as Miss Holiday to usher in the whirl of Christmas activities at Mac High. MARY JEANNE GAMROTH was pictured with the sugar-candy house that she constructed for the Christmas dance. 89 FRESHMAN CLASS yell leaders imitated Negro mammies for their class competition yell. RALLY SQUAD Grizzlies sang 'There Is Nothing Like a Game during the skit in which South Pacific was the theme. PAJAMA GAME, in skit form, was featured at a pep assembly with Rally Squad members making up the chorus. 1 THE BRAIN sang the lyrics, I Figured It Out, from Pajama Game. Connie Howard figured that 26 baskets every game, two games every week, were enough baskets to go to state. TWO MAC HIGH STUDENTS conversed with Mr. Bender while relaxing at a sock dance. WRAPS and SHOES were left in bleachers while students enjoyed themselves dancing and visiting. STUDENTS VISITED with friends while waiting for music to begin. BARNEY KEEP from KEX was the celebrity disc-jockey for Mac High this year. He was pictured chatting with two students while Glenda McAnally looked on. THE RECREATION ROOM was used for many activities, from play practice (shown here) to informal group meetings, or just plain relaxing. 92 MAC HIGH STUDENTS visited with one another while attending the Spring Dance. THE DINNER DANCE, an ASB money-raising project, was attended by many Mac High students. AMY SCHROEDER and JEFF DURHAM obviously enjoyed Hermie Greenlund's music at the Spring Dance. 93 ILSE THIEMANN, Elliott Cummins, and Diana Dawson were McMinnville American Field Service students. They were glancing through a book sent by Leena Saarinen, while Diana and Use informed Elliott of their traveling experiences. ILSE THIEMANN, who came to the United States from Bremen, Germany, was enjoying the sunny weather while attending Mac High. DIANA DAWSON, Mac High exchange student, who spent last summer in Berlin is shown as she arrived in Portland after her trip. 94 PROM COURT and their escorts were: lise Thiemann, Allan Larsen, Diana Dawson, Eldon Thompson, Queen Connie Howard, Hunt Compton, Amy Schroeder, Tom Worrell, Marleah Compton, and Tom Buckley. UNDER THE SEA was the theme of the prom, over which Connie Howard reigned as queen.
