They have learned through these organizations that cooperation is necessary in upholding a strong class. They have found the importance of taking part in extra-curricular activities as well as the regular program. In November the class sponsored a Sadie Hawkins dance. This is the second year the sophomores have sponsored such a dance. They hope that it will become a tradition among the sophomore class. Several members of the class had parts in the student body play, “Ring Around Elizabeth. They also did very well in both inter-scholastic and intramural sports. The class advisors were Mrs. Virgina Klein and Mr. Loyal Rich. Headed by president, Jack Nicholls and supervisors, Mr. Fryer and Miss Harstad, the freshmen carried out the traditional duties for the school. They all survived the customary initiation with the best of sportsmanship and proved themselves a fun-loving class. Through the year many students received excellent grades and proved themselves future honor students. Douglas Blensley lead the way with straight honor grades for two terms. Athletically, approximately fifteen freshman boys were on the football “B” squad. There was also a basketball team that included twenty freshman boys with ten to travel. In girl’s sports, the freshman girls proved themselves among the best both in skill and sportsmanship. The following freshmen were on the student council: Ed Beeler, Doug Blensley. Cliff Engel, Lelaine Weiss, Pat McClain, and Donna Barner. ACTIVITIES Engel, Johnson, Rutherford, LeRoy. A. S. B. History Student Body elections were held last May for the purpose of choosing the officers to guide the Associated Students of McMinnville High School. Those elected were: Eugene Johnson, president; Betty Engel, vice-president; Janet Rutherford, secretary; and Vernon LeRoy, sergeant-at-arms. Student Boby tickets were sold in September for $2.50. This admitted students to all school-sponsored activities such as basketball and football games, student body plays, and the four National School Assembly programs during the year. This year a new plan was adapted whereby the vice-president and a committee of students planned the assembly programs. Much credit is due Betty Engel and her assembly committee for their fine job which did much to make the year 1947-48 a success. . . . . big-little sister party first event of year • • • • Seastrand, Welch, Blenkinsop First row—Loibie, Dies, Harshitian, Seastrand, Welch, Corner, Quilliam, Rutherford. It was presented Friday, March 12, 1948, in the Senior High School gym to a capacity audience. This play, a Broadway hit many years ago, is a character comedy centering around the trials of Peg, a lovable Irish lass who comes to live with her snobbish English relatives, the Chichesters. Her Irish sense of humor carries her through, however, and she proves herself a real asset to her relatives, financially, spiritually, and socially. The splendid work of the production and stage crews in providing an unusually fine Tudor setting, and the cooperation of the cast with the very able director, Miss Ruth Lathrop, made Peg O’ My Heart” a huge success. . . . junior-senior prom was held april 24 ... . There are no dues, but money-making projects supply necessary funds for the many activities. The preparation and sale of hot dogs at football games and sponsorship of a show at a local theater were the sources of income for 1947-48. Those who had charge of activities were: Joan Rianda, president; Rena Toliver, vice-president; Ruby Kreder, secretary; and Mary Bennette, treasurer. Constance Olson and Donna Barner were freshman representatives to the Girl’s League Council. Advisors were Miss Lathrop and Mrs. Lapham. Representatives of the McMinnville group participated in a two-county Girl’s Club Conference in Hillsboro. December 13; and a State Girl’s League Convention in Salem, April 17. Interesting and varied programs were presented at the meetings held the fourth Tuesday of each month. These included a talent show, square and modern dancing; a style show, tumbling exhibition, and guest speakers. The League sponsored “Big Sisters” for freshman girls and new students to help them become better acquainted. Other major projects were the collection and mailing of 400 pounds of clothing to the Jesse Lee Home for Orphans in Seward, Alaska, and the decoration of the halls and rooms of the school for the Christmas season. McMinnville girls were hostesses to seven neighboring schools for a Girl’s League Jamboree whose theme was. “Have fun with your neighbor.” Twerp Week was a complete success with the girls making the dates and paying the bills. It began with a theater party and ended with a dance. The all-girl slumber party held in the gym was a riot of fun. On the program was food, a carnival, vaudeville, pajama parade, singing, dancing, and very little slumber. Among other things, the Grizzlies set a new T.Y.V. League scoring record against Tigard with a 72-63 point victory near the last of the season. During the season, the Grizzlies won eight games and lost six. Graduating lettermen are Bob Collins, Jim Meyerink, Dick Clark, Dick Windishar, Jack McPhillips, Eugene Johnson and Gordon Sully. Bob Collins, this year’s captain, won a place on the League All-Star second string. Bob also received the player of the week award for his outstanding work in the first Newberg game. Jim Meyerink received honorable mention on the League team. For the first time the annual TYV Jamboree was held in McMinnville. It was held in the newly completed McMinnville Armory, which now handles all the high school games. In spite of the losses, the team did an outstanding job and deserve much praise for their efforts. Although almost all of the boys in the club are occupied with their studies and athletic activities most of the year, they find time to meet at the first of the year and elect officers and carry on business and social plans throughout the year. This organization was headed by Jim Meyerink, a letter winner in all four major sports. Athletic letters at Mac Hi are given for varsity competition in any of the four recognized sports. These include basketball, baseball, football and track. In order to win an athletic letter,. a boy must have a certain amount of skill, but the real qualifications consist of willingness, faithfulness, and cooperation.
