TAKE OFF ON THE FACULTY Above our door is a huge sign that reads McLean Independent Prison That is just what it is too, a.nd the people who run 1t I don t see how they ever got their positions Head of this brutal, cruel, unhealthful home is aman of strong ormcloal and high ideals He goes under the head of title of W arden Logan Curnrrmgs Warden Cummings is one of the good points and good men of our school He makes us want to do r1ght But he means business and you had better be good to him Chlefguard Wilson Is the one who enforces law and order lIl our orgaru zation He is hardest of all on us We get no privileges no holldays, and no exceptions are made Chlefguard Wilson 1S shrewd, cruel, and on the slightest suspicion he turns us over to Slave dr1ver Sande s lashes With a tough, hard face he tells us to call agam Broken m solrlt and with a badly beaten back we trudge toward the lt ess Isall that offers swivled turnips a.nd hard black bread that Cook Coleman prepares Thinking we will gain some kind of favor we promptly offer to wash the dishes We splash them into the pan and what do we get? an eating out because we had put them in the soup We had complimented the cook on her simply delicious dishwater and hadwashed dishes ln the soup Well, how were we to know? It tasted alike to us Ifheaven won t help us, what will happen? Don't judge Cook Coleman too harshly because Farmer Magee is the one who furnishes the food with which she is to cook You d think he would know something about the conservation of soil and the rotation of crops, but he doesn t I don t think he even learned anythmg about agrlculture in school You should see some of the animals he calls his beef cattle They look like walking skeletons and it is no wonder t.hat the meat is tough His horses are just as bad You can't tell whether it is a pre historic animal or a walking turnip with crooked tree limb legs or a badly broken bird that can t fly l!
