Since our Junior year, we gained Alice Bowman from Clinton, but later in the year we lost Roscoe Edwards. We also lost Mlxine Girdler, who has been ill and unable to attend school, but she has been faith- fully studying at home and will graduate with us anyway. To lead us through the many activities of the year, we chose Harold Westerfield as president, Richard Gale as vice- president, and Betty Charles as secretary-treasurer. We then elected Mrs. Hall as our class adviser. This year the responsibility of the uHubn fell to us, and we elected as our editor-in-chiei John Wilcox, with Betty Charles, assistant editor. After a year of hard work under Mrs. Hall's excellent supervision, we hope our book will be a success. On October 25, we presented our play UShirt Sleevesn under the direction of Miss Jeanne Kendall. The play was a great success. Several members of our class are taking music and have entered the different contests and music festivals. In the contest at Peoria, Harold Lynch, Bill Buck, and Betty Curtis placed first, and John Wilcox, Sage Steffens, and Bonita Jordan placed second. In the fall, we sponsored an all-school party at 'the high school. Toward the end of the year we went to Chicagoin Brandt's bus for our Piker's Day. we visited museu s and other places of interest and also attended a movie and stage show. On May 8 we were the guests of the Juniors at the Junior -Senior Banquet held at the Hotel Rogers in Bloomington. Afterwards, we attended a theatre party. ?'LY'1'v' .'..': 11513 JI 1 :Nj , J . :f.Z'.1'CTT'1- V ,WJ FLM. , Class Night was May 20, at the Community Hnll. Paul McGuire- f President, Betty Charles - Vice President, Carol Hildebrandt ll - Secretary'Treasurer, our Class Adviser was Miss Rose Ambross :Q - these our officers of the year. E, . 'I The events of our first year were as a whole rather . uneventful, except for our class night stunt. Since our 3, Vlyl clws was definitely musical, we chose as our act nGuest Night if :if on the Hit Paraden. So ended our freshmen year. QI fiffl il . iii, Again we assembled. This time to take up our duties as - agen sophomores. Our officers were Paul McGuire - President, John , lggfi Wilcox - Vice President, and Bill Buck - Secretary-Treasurer. ' LEESW Our class adviser was Wiss Gecrgine Hess. This year passed swiftly and we were again faced with the problem of a class night program. Another musical was presented entitled uThe Cork Club.n Thus, we completed our second high school year. September, 1945: We again met in the halls of M.C.H.S. Some of the names and faces had changed, but our class still had twenty-one members. We appointed as our guides, Harold Lynch - President, John Wilcox - Vice President, Richard Gale Secretary-Treasurer. Our class adviser was lbs. Roberta Knirsch. This year was very eventful and the high spot was our play nDon't Take My Pennyn, under the direction of Mrs. Edna Baker and Mrs. Helen Hall. The play was a great success, and with the funds secured from it and from various other sources such as paper drives and parties we financed the Jun- ior-Senior Banquet, which was held at Hotel Tilden Hall in Bloomington. The thought of class night again came to our attention and we gave the musical play nShowboatU. These pagvg were to be filled in and remain as the record of our class. Sur class number now stood at twenty, but in the weols to follow we lost one member. One member of the Class was unable to attend school because of a serious illness, but took her courses at home and received her diploma under very difficult circumstances. We elected as our class officeng Harold Westerfield ----- President, Richard Gale - Vice President, Betty Charles - Secretary-Treasurer. Our class adviser was Hrs. Helen Hall. Many were the activities of this last year. The first was the traditional senior play. We chose Shirt Sleeves to be our production. This play, under the direction of Miss Jeanne Kendall was very successful. The experiences faced in pre- paring both our Junior and Senior plays is one that will long be remembered by both the directors and the students, All of our boys were athletic, and all but three olayed basketball. Our entire first team was of seniors and two served as substitutes. Athletics were not our only showing during this last year. Six of our seniors entered the disw trict music contest. Three winning firsts and three receiving seconds. For the customary Pikers Day trip,we travelled to Chic- ago and wtnt on a tour through museums and other places of educational value. ne were new faced with the last events--Class Night,Bac- calaureate, and graduation. These final activities oassed swiftly and We soon realized that our high school days had drawn to a close. we had turned the last page of our ledger, and had closed the door of one phase of life behind us. Our high school days are new over but we will never forget the faithfulness and patience of our teachers and parents as they strived to give us the education we should have. CLASS PROPHECY 1947 Every year there is a convention held in Florida Due to my complex, either inferior, superior, or normal, I will not mention it here. My story begins gust ten years after my graduation from high school, 1957. During these ten years I haven't done any great wonders, but in my own little world, which is really quite small, I ave worked myselfuptoaposrtion known as a nWorld Traveler. It was on one of these periodic excursions that I arrifed in a town that seemed to bring back botn fond and beautiful mem cries. I had seen manv towns in the past few yeazs, but this one appeared as one that had been in my dreams many times be fore. I wasn't sure of my thinking until I saw a large, six teen wheel trailer mulling up to a box car to unload cattle. At a distance I could vaguely make out the name on the truck, Westerfield As I drew nearer I saw that it readwesterfield Transfer, 'Anyth1ng, Anywhere, Anytime. After reading that and remembering that Ihad known a Westerfield boy while going to high school, I came to the conclusion that I must once again be in McLean, Illinois, Proceeding tnmediately to the cab of the truck, I opened the door and made a hearty gesture of welcome to the driver. After I had made all the formal greetings necessary for an old classmate seen for the first time in ten years, Harold said that he didn't recognize me, but that he might find a place to put me up. I admit that I was rather weary after a long trip from Florida, so I told him that if he wouldfbdd me some warm water and a razor blade, sharp on both sides, I could soon make a great difference in m appearance. He immediately produced the warm water, but I couldn't find any razor blades sharp enough to out through my heavy beard, so I came to the very fearful decision of going to a barber and getting a complete job. While I was debating this serious issue, Harold told me that one of the barbers in town was his cousin Bill Hindman. Remembering Bill quite well, I went into the shop without making any sign at all of knowing him. I climbed into the chair and said I would like a shave and haircut. It was 4:30 at that time, and Bill said that he quit at 6 for his supper hourg but that he would try to get me finished in that time. He very eagerly started in and not until a quarter after five did he discover that I almost did r 1 w , V we'p- J iff , ,.i fi 1 Aw S ka X-E1 L Q , F f F r 1 5 K -E!f'f3?I!. sf - F1 f?'f?'fT'fP'2Hf'4?: '::2'f'2'E??s?'i:f5'? ssiihfiiff5 :-2 2 ff: F355 'TW zxfilfgf-ff., EQI5 ,g,,3gq--?'ri'1,-,:rf..f:'3., :L 'f,f':f'Z',5j':':fTf'fA- -f-,:'::- Lf.-1-Q45,J-,...,. I wondered if that could, by any chance, be the Richard Gale that I had known in high school. I waited until the driver came out of the stand and asked him if he knew Richard Gale. He said that he was the man he worked for and that he had to go out to the garage where the cabs were kept to ee Richard. Having nothing else to do, I decided to ride out with him. After driving to the outskirts of town, we came to a building that looked like a hanger for a B 29 I 'went in and was nmnediately shown into the office of the boss Richard Gale. In the conversation, I asked him why he had ever started a cab company He said that when Orville Smith had come back from college and started an airplane factory employing 5,0 people and when a few other factories had started up, he de cided to start a cab oonnany and cash in on the goldnunethey would provide. I d1dn't have to ask him why he called it the mile a minute cab comoany, the driver had shown me on the way out. After an interestinr convor at1on,we got into one of his cabs and aroxe out to Orville' fac orf. Upon our entrance into the office, I immediately noticed a familiar face. I soon dis overod that it ras Alice Bomman, or rather, Mrs. Smith Ie th n had e hurried chat with Orville, but left soon because wc could tell that he vas a very busy nan After leaving OFV1118'S office, Richard told me that there vas arother person I would like to se He said that After that, ho d1dn't n ed to tell me that it wa Bill Buck The last ti e I had heard about Bill, he wa sta ring in a clay on Bro dvay in New York In fact, it had brok n all re cords for attendance and length of running time After talk ing to Bill, I could tell that he hadnft changed much and that he was doing quite well for himself. The day seemed to go quickly and while spending a quiet evening listening to the radio in my hotel room, I was nearl shocked into unconsciousness, when the announcer eaad,nNert , The Betty Curtis Show, which has replaced the Kate Smith Show! Aftez recovering, I cttled back and engoyed a very lovely selection of solo by Betty. In her day at high school she had been called Kate Smith becau e of her ability to sing I knew Betty would become successful with he vo1ce,but I didntt dream that she would step right in and take over Kate Smith' place. After the program, I decided that she was very d finitely equal to, if not more than, Kate Smith. 4 f . . r . - F . J!! r 'I r S ' Sy . . . - . . A K x , . . A . , 3 . W r . ' ' ' A A , . . On December 5, Hayworth came over to beat us 26-41 for our first defeat in the Kickapoo conference. One ofthe most exciting games ofthe year was when Beason came to our home floor to be beaten 55-55 in an overtime. We lost our second game in the Kickapoo conference when LeRoy defeated us 29-48. In the fourth quarter Wilcox suf- fered a blow on the head and was removed from the game. John was not able to play again until after Christmas. On December 15, we went to Armington only to be defeated 19-57. Even with the aid d'our cheering section, led by Carol Hildebrandt, Bill Buck, and Katie Crutohley, the boys could not get started. The next Tuesday, Waynesville came to our floor to see how our team was. Well, they found out when we beat them 69-41, Steffens was high scorer with 50 points. On Thursday 19th we traveled to Normal Community to be defeated 21-44. we were holding our own in the first half with a score of 16-24.but in the second haH'they held Stefbns down and we didn't make a field basket. Steffens got 18 of the 21 points. Maybe if John.Wilcox had played it might have been a different story. Our last game before Christmas was with Stanford on our floor. We won by a score of 51-50. This was our third win in the Kickapoo conference. Our first game after Christmas was at Atlanta. Mr. Craig said if we won this game with Atlanta and the next one later in the season it would be a successful season. Well, it was half a successful season because we won 58-55. J I 1 1 A Ll 'f-ai-1 Music Mrs. Sherwood, music instructor for the McLean schools organized the following high school groups during the school year: Band In late October, twenty-eight beginners started lessons on various band instruments. Seven of these nfell-by-the-- waysiden from various causes, but the remaining twenty-one performed at the annual basketball banquet April ll. Girls Glee Club --Tliis organization, composed of seventeen members worked hard on sal figgio exercises, voice placement, and song inter- pretation all year. They met only twice a week, but took part in several activities, one of which was singing at the Junior play. McLean County Music Festival On April 25rd the boys and girls glee clubs participated in the VcLean County Music Festival. The program was broad- cast in the evening, and all participated in the boys and girls numbers respectively. A mixed Octette represented us in the mixed numbers. 52553 5122 il This wus a small group of only eight boys, but they sang in the festival and gained good musical background during the year. District Music Contest On March 29 seven members of the glee clubs entered in the District Music Contest at Wbodford High School and Long- fellow School in Peoria. They gained honors of three Division I, three Divisions II, and one Division IV awards. The three students in the Division I went to the State Contest for all D class schools in Macomb on May 4 and 5. Although this was our first year in music work of this kind for quite some time, we feel that we have benefited greatly from Mrs. Sherwood's help and direction and hope that the community has enjoyed our work as much as we have.
