H I li Introduction. 4 1972-1973. 10 Faculty...••.158 Underclass.180 Seniors.210 Conclusion.256 Senior Index..266 Patrons.270 Index.272 3 Is not religion all deeds and all reflection, And that which is neither deed nor reflection, but a wonder and a sur¬ prise ever springing in the soul, even while the hands hew the stone or tend the loom? Who can separate his faith from his actions or his belief from is occupation? Who can spread his hours before him, saying, This for God and this for myself; This for my soul, and this other for my body? All your hours are wings that beat through space from self to self. He who wears his morality but as his best garment were better naked. The wind and the sun will tear no holes in his skin. And he who defones his conduct by ethics imprisons his song-bird in a cage. The freest song comes not through bars and wires. And he to whom worshipping is a window, to open but also to shut, has not yet visited the house of his soul whose win¬ dows are from dawn to dawn. Your daily life is your temple and your religion. Whenever you enter into it take with your all. Take the plough and the forge and the mallet and the lute, The things you have fashioned in ne¬ cessity or for delight. For in revery you cannot rise above your achievements nor fall lower than your failures. And take with you all men: For in adoration you cannot fly higher than their hopes nor humble yourself lower than your despair. And if you would know God be not there¬ fore a solver of riddles. Rather look about you and you shall see Him walking in the cloud, outstretching Him arms in the lighting and descending in rain. You shall see Him smiling in flowers, then rising and waving His hands in trees. from The Prophet by K ahlil Gibran I 1 ■; ' v 1 ; y • tfy t g tooVifiS - -’opcor D e aivutS G ooV. c s i PROM 72 Entering through the grin of an enormous clown, The Circus made its way to the 1972 Junior-Senior Prom. Maybe on a tightrope herself, Lenny Granger, escorted by Tom Seelinger, was crowned that year ' s queen. With the help of candy apples, peanuts, and joyous clowns, all aspects of the circus came to life. The ringmaster, assited by the balloon man, managed to keep the snakes and gorillas in their cages. With Prom 73 taking place at the Ramada Inn instead of the gym, the decorations held added meaning for those who attended in 72 . Under the supervision of Robin Con¬ nor and Steve Decker, the gym had been successfully transformed into a visual memory of our youthful in- noncence, innocence left behind not quite as eagerly as we had expected it to be. n POWDERPUFF The Junior Jockettes almost pulled one over on the Senior Sad Sacks at our annual Powderpu ' ff confrontation. Excited by Dorothy Shilling ' s running, Coddy Marx ' s quarterbacking, and the eagerness of their first-year Coaching Squad, the Juniors rose quickly to a 6-0 lead, which held until half-time. After half-time and finally ready to play ball, the Seniors erupted for a touchdown by Teri Norman plus two extra points by Joanie Monahan. Egged on by their cheerleaders and the brilliant tactics of their more ex¬ perienced coaches, the Seniors brought the game to its 14-6 con¬ clusion with a touchdown toss from Sally Johnson to Kim Walker. Once again, the Class of 73 . . . PEP RALLIES Cheerleaders, Songleaders, Band, and various members of the faculty joined their talents together to bring the spirit of the football season to the stu¬ dents of McLean. Classrooms were searched for hidden footballs and voices screamed out in pursuit of the Spirit Stick, but, their voices lost to the boys on the team and the pseudo-so¬ phistication of them, the juniors and Seniors failed to ever really join in. The Freshmen, always eager to try anything new, were constantly battl¬ ing it out with the Sophomores as even they, old hands at this business, were beaten more than once by the eagerness of the Frosh. •35 « •% W • - ' ■ ; ' 7! ? . VARSITY FOOTBALL The Varsity football team, under new Head Coach Periello, fought its way to an event-filled 2-win, 6-loss, and 2- tie season. The wins came over Mount Vernon and Madison, with the ties on Oakton and Herndon. Throughout the season, the team was supported by the colorful band and drill team, the enthusiasm of the songleaders and cheerleaders, and the fairly large crowds. In spite of this and the talent of tri-captains Randy Russell, Brad Schwarz and Gary Nel¬ son, the team was never able to come up with the really crucial points. Coach Periello, assisted by coaches Reeves, Dinan, and Mandes, worked hard to develope depth in the team and build for next year ' s team, while trying to bring victory to McLean this year. With 24 seniors leaving the team, there is great hope that his fore¬ sight will pay off next season. 1 flr ' gSr mm allff|l ® Is. ▼ -s-c. ■ Iffik ImHO ' ' i mi mt Rick kOfydaJ Randy Russel Brad Schwarz, Gary Nelson, Dave O ' Rourke, Dean Loizou, ick Mears Chris Little Tofrt Kuh. Along with the cheerleading sponsor, Mrs. Schupp, and the Songleading spon¬ sor, Mrs. Womble, the girls worked together to involve the student body in their enthusiasm for sports at McLean. As the year continues, the cheerleaders go on to cheer for bas¬ ketball, while the Songleaders support the wrestling team. Both squads work equally hard to encourage the guys, and the athletic department. Susan Artiglia, Laura Asendorf—Treas. Marching with perfect timing, they provided the spirit which was necessary in the events of McLean High. Adding to the color of the games, the Swiss Flag Corp held their banners high as twir- lers Barbie Gallagher and Jenny Shimitz were on hand to catch their batons. Acting as drill team captain was Martha Lubin and as drum major, Jack Jennings. Supporting the band in every step of the way were director Mr. Lenny Leard and drill team sponsor Mrs. Lindgren. Without a doubt the combinations of all these people led to the success of the McLean High School Band and Drill Team. m00 ' . HOMECOMING Statesmen are rotten to the core! shouted the little green worm atop the Senior float as Felicia Lloyd, es¬ corted by Charles Horne, was crowned this year ' s Homecoming Queen. Linda Starbuck, Queen 71, returned to crown Felicia along with Princesses Travis Horel and Joanie Monahan. The high-stepping High¬ lander Band and Drill Team outdid themselves during half-time while Cheerleaders and Songleaders des¬ perately tried to prove their prepara¬ tions worthwhile. With it not really their night and playing against a strong Marshall squad, McLean scored one touchdown, but was not able to hold off for a better than 28-6 loss. Undaunted, many relived The Days of Wine and Roses on the following night. Dancing amid an enormous wine bottle and glass, and upon a rose-strewn floor, the loss of the pre¬ vious night seemed to fade quietly away. t fW4 ¥ p ) pi ■ f wL 1 M J.V. Both Coach Parks and Coach Wood worked hard with the limited time available and the skills developed will prove immeasu¬ rable in their next three Falls at McLean. 29 CROSS COUNTRY The small McLean Cross Country team ran its way to a disappointing four loss and one tie season, the tie coming against Yorktown. Coach Le¬ vin, in his first year as cross country coach, has great hopes for future sea¬ sons as only three seniors are gradu¬ ating from the team. TENNIS The Girl ' s Tennis Team began the season with not only new players but new coaches, Mr. Robert Glenn and Mrs. Anna Schupp. With the help of the coaches the team went on to a winning season, which was five wins and four losses. Then at the end of the season five girls advanced to the Regionals: a singles player, Coddy Marx and two doubles teams, Karen Vetterling and Barbara Marsland and Debbie Furmage and Missy Metz. Coddy Marx ad¬ vanced to state. This year two new awards were given at the Fall Sports Banquet, to the most improved player and the most valuable player. Kathy Wieseman, a new member of the team, who played number four singles, re¬ ceived the first award and Coddy Marx, who played number one singles received the sec¬ ond. Although the team is losing several of their important senior players, Sally Johnston, number two singles, Rene Gertreu, number three singles, and Ann Thor and Christa Haf¬ fner, number three doubles, the team has great hopes for another winning season next year. iM mm : i ‘.s ' c . .... HOCKEY HOCKEY.to the 38 girls on the teams it was more than just a game. It was 10 weeks of hard practice, games and fun. With the advice and friendship of Coach Carroll the varsity season was a success. Lead by co-captains Robbie Connor and Sara Rosenbaum, the varsity held a 5-3-0 record. The defense held the opponents to 5 goals while the offense scooped in 11. With encouragement from Miss T. the J.V., boosted by co-captains Felicia Grable and Margie Conrad, increased in skill from day to day. Through the season they developed as friends and as a team. If it wasn ' t a sur¬ prise visit to the coach ' s house on Hallow¬ een with T.P. and costumes, it was corsages and horror movies. If all else failed they could always run extra laps to talk and plot their next attack. This year, more than any other, they were a team! Not individuals, but a team that worked, fought, laughed and cried together. Whether they won or lost on the scoreboard, they always came out ahead. ' V Tv TflllW MS •1 S5««y F . BACK TO SCHOOL Each year, a night is set aside for the parents to take on their children ' s roles as students. After a brief orienta¬ tion, they are “let loose —armed only with an “Angus Almanac , a copy of each of their children ' s schedules and the dilemma of choosing between them, and the optimism that this year ' s guides will be better navigators than last. % ■ i rf m ] IB | ■ ' |e V g jjp t fliiiHw IZ 2 1 IM 9 « CAMPAIGN 72 In the? form of two assemblies for the up¬ perclassmen, the major congressional can¬ didates of 1972 attended McLean, joel T. Broyhill eventually won the race, but it was Harold O. Miller who was generally fa¬ vored in McLean ' s mock election. Both as¬ semblies, while not really bringing anything new to the surface, did manage to bring the election a bit closer to home for those soon-to-vote juniors and Seniors. IT ' S ACADEMIC The It ' s Academic team competes on the TV quiz show each year with other three member teams from pub¬ lic and parochial schools in the Wash¬ ington metropolitan area. The money that the McLean team wins is put in a scholarship fund and in the spring is awarded to a college bound student. This year the team practiced with Miss Tankard and Mrs. Deverall two mornings before school and an eve¬ ning each week. They also practiced with a buzz board similar to the one used on the show. Partici¬ pation in these events extends to tournaments sponsored by the Wash¬ ington Forensic League, which admit¬ ted the team to membership for the first time in September, 1972; the Vir¬ ginia High School League, and univer¬ sity invitational meets. The team par¬ ticipated in twelve tournaments during the year, winning several trophies. Mrs. Kathleen Rixey is the individual events coach, and Dr. Paul Shirk serves as debate coach. m FIORELLO! The curtain opens to the sign of On the Air and Raul Grable, as Fiorello H. LaGuardia, is reading the Sunday funnies to the children of New York City. Flashing back from this scene to the earlier years of his political career, the play takes Mayor LaGuardia ' s life from un¬ known civil liberties lawyer to his unbelie¬ vable position as congressman. The play was directed by John Duncan with Lon Leard directing the orchestra and the combination of drama and band departments in Fiorello! provided for a truly enjoyable Home Ec 1 mm m i-.. . . 4 • imMri [ Art Assistants: Tricia Hart, Bobbie Blatchford, Diane Hart, Lisa Hoenig 45 WINTER FASHION 72 Every Fall, in co-operation with the Simplicity fashion company, the Home-Economics department orga¬ nizes a fashion show in which pupils from the department model new out¬ fits of the season. With the art depart¬ ment ' s colorful curtain design, the light music of the band, and the use of both male and female models, the show proved very enjoyable. ART SHOW In co-operation with the National Park Service and the art departments of McLean, Herndon, and Langley, what was commonly referred to as The First Annual Great Falls Art Show came into being. With almost total access of the information center building, the exhibition was so suc¬ cessful that plans were started imme¬ diately for an exclusively-McLean showing in the Spring. £ 5 mi I m wsm. Murals decorated the entranceway and put everyone in the mood as swans, geese and milk maid cardboard figures were scat¬ tered ' round the cafeteria. There even was a partridge in a Christmas Tree! Sitting under the mistletoe and armed with candy canes, Santa Claus, alias Randy Russell, added to the festivities. In spite of a name like Clean Pea¬ nuts , the band really was good and helped make for a very enjoyable evening for all. 63 PROJECT TOUCH Saturday mornings meant a lot to the participants of Project Touch, a pro¬ gram which brings elementary school children with emotional problems into close contact with volunteers from nearby high schools. Through active games of football and soccer, finger painting, gallons of Kool-Aid, the pounding piano, Santa Claus, and much hard work by tri-chairmen Christa Haefner, Robin Connor, and Frank Sturges, Project Touch proved to be both constructive and a lot of fun for everyone. s HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS This year ' s second quarter brought an experimental project for one of Mrs. Woodford ' s thematic English classes. Under the course offer, Human Relationships , grandparents were adopted from Powhatan Home For The Aged. In the spirit of Christmas, doors and wheelchairs were deco¬ rated, cookies and gifts were made, and the students presented a skit. Be¬ cause of the program ' s success, plans were made to continue it for the rest of the year. CHRISTMAS ABROAD mm. The tour group spent over 80 hours on trains, boats, and planes and ate an incalcuable number of pounds of meat and potatoes. In 17 days, they spent time in Helsinki, Moscow, Le¬ ningrad, Amsterdam and London touring the regular tourist places and spending free time as opportunity permitted. Some of the most enlight¬ ening times were spent conversing di¬ rectly with the people of the countries. The only let-down of the trip was the lack of Russian snow and London fog. On December 30th, the group returned tired and dying for some good American food, but richer from sharing an experience which we ' ll never forget. All this hard work is di¬ rected for one purpose; pinning the opponent. When a McLean wrestler accomplishes this goal, the referee raises his arm in victory, and he walks back to his teammates as if on air. McLean had it ' s share of good play but unfortunately did not produce as many wins as the fans wanted. In spite of a cheering Keyette Club, car¬ rots held at the end of a stick, and an audience which was predominantly in their favor, 14-8 saw the Key Clubbers go down to defeat by the coaching staff. COACHING STAFF HL (TTL me a ; m 1 iPfc w Also in its second year at McLean, is the basketball game between the Redskins and our coaching staff. The game proved very close as Coach Henry ' s fine shooting and the defen¬ sive moves of Coach Estes kept the Redskins down to a win of 54-46. The Redskins, always eager to please their fans, were forced to keep their minds on the ball game, but did give out many autographs afterwards. The McLean Girl ' s Basketball Team carried on tradition by combining in¬ dividual skills, determination, and teamwork to again come up with a winning season. Under the direction of coaches Call and Carrol, the Lassies hustled through their second season of five-man b-ball, drawing an in¬ creasing number of fans. To the beat of 250624, the girl ' s demonstrated their technique that was to be the downfall of so many opponents. The 72-73 season brought more than vic¬ tory for the Highlanders. The Varsity members became proficient cheer¬ leaders and songleaders, with the N.B.A. providing added inspriation and support. A major revelation for the year: Bright colors on game days are a no-no! To the six seniors, this season was the climax of four years of participation on the McLean team. The Juniors look confidantly to next year. And with the tremendous talent and potential demonstrated by the freshman and sophomores, the future of girl ' s basketball at McLean looks promising indeed. The higher degree of perfection in rou¬ tines displayed by the girls, showed that the ' baby of Sports ' in Faifax County had grown-up since the 1971- 72 season. The second indication of growth was the ever increasing num¬ ber of girls entered in the ' Optional ' category of gymnastics. In order for team to grow and survive the team must open itself to this tougher com¬ petitive category. This year ' s team, with the help of, Maggie McNeely, an out-going senior, and Patti Thomson, two of the team ' s important com¬ petitor ' s, had a very good season and has high hopes of continuing their good record in the coming year. INDONKKT AVYWY N.A.I.M.U.N ' rv With a halftime score of Juniors ' 25 and Seniors ' 22, it seemed as if tht? Ji¬ vin ' Juniors were going to pull it over on the Senior Sad Sacks. The Juniors were a bit too slow in the second half, however, and the aggressive defense of the Seniors began to dominate the game. The Jivin ' Juniors presented a very large cheerleading squad while the Sad Sacks had a smaller but more exhuberant group. One Junior made a Senior basket and high scorers Jim Stigamire and Gary Gray brought the game to the conclusion of the Class of 73 with 59 over the Class of 74 ' s 56. WINTER CHORAL CONCERT Traveling” was this year ' s Winter Choral Concert theme and at con¬ clusion one felt as if having just com¬ pleted a very intensive pleasure bruise. From up-up and away in a bal¬ loon, to the dreamin ' of California, to a cute aviation skit song, and to the reading of the maps, the show moved quickly along. The colorful costumes, variety of song styles, obvious enjoy¬ ment of the performers, and the dedi¬ cation of Ms. Anderson, all added up for one of the most entertaining of choral concerts. A pre-festival concert is one of the Band Department ' s major winter per¬ formances. Bringing in the ch ildren of neighborhood elementary and junior highs, it gives these youngsters, as well as McLean band students, the opportunity for a warm-up to the fes¬ tival. Playing for an enthusiastic au¬ dience of parents and friends, who will probably not see all the major portions of the festival, the young mu¬ sicians make great use of this concert in an attempt to finalize much of that which will be played in festival competition. WINTER BAND CONCERT pkM WE fflUSflM THE SEA As an experimental project to pro¬ mote and express the continuity be¬ tween departments, “The Sea , as it commonly was called, came into being. The program was under the guidance of Mr. Davenport—marine biology, Ms Young—artwork from and dealing with the sea, Ms Stone and Ms Best—literature of the sea, Mr. Bartlett—maritime politics, and Ms Donaldson—the sea in regard to the ecology crisis. With such subject mat¬ ter as the singing of sea chanties, Mobey Dick, the sea and foreign pol¬ icy, water color in seascapes, and the study of water pollution, the project proved extremely successful. It was just a beginning, however, and it is anticipated that a program of its type will be continued on a larger scale in the coming school year. f y. The third production of the McLean Drama Department was Agatha Christie ' s award winning play, Wit¬ ness for the Prosecution . This play, as with most of Christie ' s works, has many strange twists. The play starred a rising new performer, John Gore, who, sadly enough for the drama de¬ partment, is graduating this year, and was supported by a cast of such old hats as Sue Men Dittmar, Phil McDermott, Raul Grable, and Ann Hopkins. The play was one of the most successful productions of the drama season and was certainly full of turns which both stunned and enth¬ ralled the audience. WITNESS w FOR THE PROSECUTION The days between April 14th and 28th saw great prestige for the art depart¬ ment of McLean. Because of the pre¬ vious tri-school showing at Great Falls National Park, McLean was given time and space for an exclusive showing. Under the title of Art in the Park , the show covered much ground, both in subject matter and choice of mate¬ rials, and blended in well with the gentle surroundings of the informa¬ tion center at the park. The showing came to a climax at the barbecue which was shared by all the partici¬ pants and their instructors, Ms Ray and Ms Young, as even a drizzly day couldn ' t hold down the high spirits. Even though it was pouring outside, the spirits inside could not be dampened as the day proved an enjoyable and prosperous one for everyone con¬ cerned. Although many of the games were postponed due to.rain, wins over arch-rivals Madison and Langley proved only the beginning. The coaching of Miss Call and Miss Carroll provided the experience nec¬ essary for a winning team, while Var¬ sity co-captains Sally Johnston and Joanie Monahan and J.V. captain Debbie Parker provided the added incentive. That is why every man ' s story is important, eternal, sacred; that is why every man, as long as he lives and fulfills the will of nature, is wondrous, and worthy of every consideration. In each in¬ dividual the spirit has become flesh, in each man the creation suffers. I wanted only to try to live in ac¬ cord with the promptings which came from my true self. Why was that so very difficult?
