FOREIGN LANGUAGES Idiom drills, basic sentences, trans- lation drills, and substitution drills are familiar terms to most McLean students. These terms refer to courses offered by the Foreign Language Department in German, French, and Spanish. Students of Latin are well aware of the pitfalls of conjugations, declensions, and passive periphrastics. These courses not only enable the student to gain insight into his own language, but also give him common bonds with peoples of other nations. ‘ All eyes on the ceiling.”’ 17

Mr. John Duncan - Drama Department eter D iain sarpace The desire of McLean’s students to express themselves artistically in drama, music and visual art has expanded the fine arts department. The Highlander Choir and the Madrigals, both more highly select groups this year, thrilled their audiences in the Christmas and Spring concerts and combined their musical ability with dramatic talent in the production of ‘‘West Side Story.’’ The bands proved in their concerts that they could meet the challenge of new music and provide top-rate entertain- ment, while the visual art department has displayed in the halls the results of new graphic equipment and more fully developed art courses for advanced students. “Yes, yes, yes, yes, ... LIBRARY Mrs. Huckabee’s hideaway. No area in any high school or center of learning can exist without up-to- date library facilities. This includes not only books, but other material as well: audio-visual aids, periodi- cals, maps, films, filmstrips, etc. In our changing world of mass com- munication and increased knowledge, McLean’s library tries to keep abreast of the new publications in all areas. Teachers, administrators, as well as librarians, are constantly sub- mitting orders for new books and aids. This has allowed our library to become an excellent research facility where students are able to work with the most current findings in all fields of study. heserve Ba ocr Ke Mrs. Gloria Huckabee and Miss Norma Dektor.
