lt ee FOREWORD In the following pages you will once again travel the familiar highways and byways of McLean High School, observ- ing this year as the product of a corporation of education. In many ways McLean High School resembles a business corporation. It has a board of directors, executives, workers, unions, an assembly line, and even a coffee break. The faculty has guided the student in his studies, while the students themselves have organized and participated in extracurricular activities. The field of athletic endeavour has served as a focal point for school spirit, while social events have enabled the students to gain a cultural as well as an intellectual education. Thisis the year that you, the employees of this corporation of education, have produced. McLean’s administration keeps quite busy with the multitude of problems which arise daily in the operation of a large cosmopolitan high school. These duties include not only re such things as transportation, student-faculty problems, preparation of reports, scheduling classes, curriculum, maintenance of the school plant, etc., but also relations with the a community, state, and nation as well. Probably no department in McLean High School is more important to the students than the Guidance Department. From the moment a new student enters the school until he graduates, this department guides his academic and vocational pursuits. The primary function of the Guidance Department is to help the student realistically evaluate himself; this includes routine scheduling, progress evalua- tion, and individual direction in assisting him in accomplishing each day’s work. To facilitate these services, the county has established data proc- essing centers where report cards and other records are handled. Mrs. Mildred Lowe, DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE — Seated: Mrs. Fonda Simmons, Mrs. Mary Marshall. Standing: Miss Carrie Chapman, Mr. Palmer Ruther- ford, Miss Joyce Chapman. GUIDANCE 11 Sa ee cae oe Mrs. Winnifred Helmick, Mrs. Dorothy Wilgus, Mrs. Mildred Davis, Mrs. Dorothy Henry, Mrs. Eleanor Pickering. Mrs. Pickering Mrs. Paula Kleinfeld - Finance Officer AMERICAN CIVILIZATION Mr. Arthur Day and Miss Irene Adamusko American Civilization at McLean High School is a course of study in which seven academic disciplines are interrelated in order to: (1) see effects of philosophical and physical environment on the develope- ment of the American; (2) trace the parallel developments of the various’ sectional cultures; (3) create an understanding of the present-day American and a recognition MronE lea Cae of his common as well as his individual characteristics, values, and customs; (4) understand America’s present-day position as a major world power. Standing: Mr. Harry Maranian, Mr. Jerry Miller, Mr. Poling. 13 Miss Libby Auten, Miss Eleanor Ruddle, Mr. Al Ames Mrs. Mary Taugner, Department Chairman BUSINESS The Business Department feels that every student could supplement his academic wisdom with the know-how for temporary or permanent employ- ment. Courses offered in distributive education, typewriting, shorthand, bookkeeping, and office machines (COP-VOT) develop skills which are much in demand among the employers of the area. A number of students ben- efit, too, from actual work experience combined with their classroom training under the Distributive Education and Vocational Office Training programs. These and other students may also take Civil Service examinations for typists and stenographers and become certified for summer or permanent employ- ment after graduation. In addition, one-semester courses are offered to students who want typing and notehand only as useful tools to aid in their college careers. ENGLISH Seated: Mrs. Helen Krell (Dept. Chairman), Mrs. Janet French, Mary Cleary, Miss Sara Page, Mr. Dennis Osborn, Mrs. Charlotte Mrs. Sara Jane Catron. Standing: Miss Mary Ann Hughes, Mrs. Conger, Mrs. Martha Poling, Miss Beth Oakes. The courses offered by the English Depart- ment increase the students facility with the basic skills of the English language. English I and II provide a solid foundation in gram- mar, composition, and world literature, while English III and IV place emphasis on Ameri- can and English literature with continued practice in composition skills. These skills enable the student to express his opinions both in writing and in speaking. The student acquires a greater appreciation of the importance of English in his life. Mr. Van Wall Mr. John Duncan - Drama Department eter D iain sarpace The desire of McLean’s students to express themselves artistically in drama, music and visual art has expanded the fine arts department. The Highlander Choir and the Madrigals, both more highly select groups this year, thrilled their audiences in the Christmas and Spring concerts and combined their musical ability with dramatic talent in the production of ‘‘West Side Story.’’ The bands proved in their concerts that they could meet the challenge of new music and provide top-rate entertain- ment, while the visual art department has displayed in the halls the results of new graphic equipment and more fully developed art courses for advanced students. Left to right: Mr. Norbert Irvine, Mr. Jerry Miller, Miss Lillian Nunn, Mr. Phil Lester. cork Seated: Mrs. Jean Hanchette, Mrs. Terry Jo Sullivan, Mr. Brown, Mr. James Perry, Mrs. Elizabeth White, Capt. Bartlett, William Brown. Standing: Mrs. Catherine Deverall, Mrs. Elizabeth Mrs. Mary Cleary. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Idiom drills, basic sentences, trans- lation drills, and substitution drills are familiar terms to most McLean students. These terms refer to courses offered by the Foreign Language Department in German, French, and Spanish. Students of Latin are well aware of the pitfalls of conjugations, declensions, and passive periphrastics. These courses not only enable the student to gain insight into his own language, but also give him common bonds with peoples of other nations. ‘ All eyes on the ceiling.”’ 17 “Yes, yes, yes, yes, ... LIBRARY Mrs. Huckabee’s hideaway. No area in any high school or center of learning can exist without up-to- date library facilities. This includes not only books, but other material as well: audio-visual aids, periodi- cals, maps, films, filmstrips, etc. In our changing world of mass com- munication and increased knowledge, McLean’s library tries to keep abreast of the new publications in all areas. Teachers, administrators, as well as librarians, are constantly sub- mitting orders for new books and aids. This has allowed our library to become an excellent research facility where students are able to work with the most current findings in all fields of study. heserve Ba ocr Ke Mrs. Gloria Huckabee and Miss Norma Dektor. MATHEMATICS The Mathematics Department is sufficiently flexible to adapt itself to the changing needs of the student body. Although no new courses were offered this year, in the past few years the programs of study have been modernized to keep in line with the nationwide trend in mathematics. As a result, the student is now able to pursue his studies from General Math 9, to Advanced Placement Math, which con- sists of college level calculus. Miss Edith Elliott. Dept. A wide variety of physical education activities are taught at McLean, covering both team and _ individual sports. The team sports are taught to encourage physical skills, sportsmanship, and co-operation. The individual sports are stressed in order to provide’ students’ with recreational interest in later life. Besides contributing to the well-being of students through these programs, the Physical Education Depart- ment also offers courses in health, first aid, and driver education. PHYSICAL EDUCATION 20 McLean wins again! PRACTICAL ARTS Mr. Dale Larson and Mr. Paul Pence HE The good smells and the unearthly grinding noises heard from the halls are evidence that the Practical Arts Department is hard at work. In the Home Economics section, girls and this year boys, are being taught basic skills in Managing a home and are getting experience outside the classroom with trips to a clothing factory and Woodward and Lothrop’s China, Glassware, and Silverware Department. The industrial arts section trains boys in the basics of woodworking, metal working and printing; | preparing them for future job opportunities in the craft trades. ede Dorion 21 SCIENCE This year the Science Department has added another another ‘‘alphabet’’ course to the curriculum—ESCP, the Earth Science Curriculumn Project. In addition, the department offers BSCS biology, CHEM study chemistry, CBA chemistry, and PSSC physics. Complementing these standard courses is Advanced Placement Chemistry, offered to selected senior students. One of the most dynamic and important areas of study today, important not only to high school students but to every American as well, is in the field of Social Studies. As our world grows smaller it becomes even more necessary for everyone to better understand and know about other cultures as well as his own. The Social Studies Depart- ment is attempting to do this by offering a variety of courses designed with this in mind—World Civilization, American Civilization, Modern History, Geography, Econ- omics, Sociology, U.S. History, U.S. Government, World History and Ancient and Medieval History. Bi “ 3 “‘Pete was right, this isn’t work.”’ 23 SOCIAL STUDIES ie, No one will ever find me here.’’ Mrs. Irene Jones SCHOOL NURSE The school nurse is a valuable member of the professional staff at McLean High School. On duty most of the day, her job is to ad- minister the school’s health program as estab- lished by the County Health Department. Among her various jobs in this capacity are physical examinations for all students, work- ing with daily health problems, tuberculin tests, audiometer tests, dental checks, visual tests, first aid, and any major accidents which might occur. 24 VISITING TEACHER McLean is fortunate in having the services of a little known, but very busy person, the Visit- ing Teacher. Her job includes a variety of activities such as working with indigent fa- milies, working with potential drop-outs, help- ing students who have dropped out of school to obtain jobs, and working with families faced with major social and economic prob- lems. Mrs. Jones services are invaluable in helping to better the lives of these students. Mrs. E. H. Little CUSTODIANS HOStes eo | ae : Seated: Mr. Mason, Mr. Nichols, Mr. Collins. It grew this year to 470 members, all of whom participated in the many activities of the Senior Class. Along with a prize winning float, a victorious powderpuff team and a very successful Senior Dance, the class sponsored the Senior Banquet, the Senior Show, and an “‘in- teresting’’ class trip to Skyline. Besides athletic ability and talent, the Senior Class has academic ability as shown by the 12 merit finalists and 40 letters of commendation. We are all looking for- ward to graduation and a successful future. President seeks outside help—from Bobbi Miller to be exact. MARY A. NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS McLean High School can be justifiably proud of the record its students have compiled in the annual Na- tional Merit Scholarship com- petition. This year we have in addition to eleven finalists in the regular competition two finalists in the special Na- tional Merit program for Negro students. Also worthy of note is the fact that these thirteen students represent one of the largest aggregations of schol- arship at any one place in the country. Congratulations to these students on their outstanding performance. For the eighth consecu- tive year McLean High has had winners in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. Much to Mrs. Walsh’s _ relief, Geoff Hougland and Brian Carroll arrived on the scene with math projects which, coupled with good scores on a rugged comprehensive test, won honors in stiff competition. GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD Lyn Baird and John White are familiar figures around school, since both are active in numerous school _ ac- tivities. In recognition of their service to the school and exemplary character, Lyn, selected by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and John, selected by the Sons of the American Revolution, were select- ed to receive the Good Citizenship Award for 1966. To take its place in the class structure of the school, the Sophomores went all out to enthusias- tically support everything that happened at McLean. Not only did they provide eager and talented athletes for sports activities and interested members for organizations around the school, but they ran one of the most lively, spirited class elections in the spring that McLean has ever seen. With the prospects shown by this class, McLean will have no trouble in remaining a great school. WRESTLING Cheek to Cheek. 167 There are losers in every league and our wres- tling team fulfilled the quota for the Potomac District. Coach Swan, in his first year as coach, labored long hours to mold the team. Toward the end of the year evidence was found, in the persons of Jim Spore and Mike Farrington, to show that his efforts were not in vain. Both boys did well in the District and area matches. It is hoped that the returning lettermen will form the nucleus for a more successful season next year. In game after game, McLean set the pace, only to have victory snatched from them with seconds re- maining. So many things have happened, so many ex- periences since my first day in the U.S. when I tried to have a hamburger with fork and knife! Now I have finally succeeded in remembering the combination of my locker (although I cannot always open it), and have learned that the U.S. is something besides crew-cuts, chewing gum and peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches. It has been a wonderful experience and I have enjoyed it thorough- ly. I will miss McLean H.S., my North American family, sledding and McDonald’s, but I feel happy thinking that back at home I will be able to convey a more accurate concept of you to my people. I hope you will always remember that Urguayans are not tree-dwellers and that we do have T.V. and cars in Uruguay. Thank you for everything, Sincerely, Beatriz Garcia-Almandos (Uruguary - ’65-’66) ‘ And in my spare time ... MISS McLEAN 1966 MISS LINDA HILL 213 UNIOR SENIOR GAME ‘“ Hey Coach!
