Long before McLean High School ever opened its doors, the administration and the faculty met and debated the actual purposes of a high school. Ques- tionnaires were sent out to both students and their parents asking what they expected from their secondary education. New ideas were brought up, dis- cussed and thought over. 'From this a philosophy gradually emerged. Through the years this philosophy has necessarily been altered and broadened to meet the new problems that are constantly arising. Yet the basic aims have re- mained the same. In meeting the educational needs of the area youth the faculty of McLean not only instructs them in appropriate subject matter, but tries to develop in them the highest of moral, social and spiritual standards including love of democracy, personal integrity and human sympathy. McLean provides an organized program assisting students in solving their social and vocational needs by educating each student according to his interests and abilities. McLean tries to offer a wide, flexible curriculum which trans- mits cultural heritage, sharpens the esthetic senses, arouses the intellectual curiosity, developes the creative potential and fosters the physical well-being of each student. The faculty tries to encourage interest in local, state, national and World affairs by providing opportunities for active participation and training in civic life by stimulating a sense of social responsibility. lVlcLean aids in making the Americans of tomorrow meet the demands of the Americans of today and the ideals of the Americans of yesterday. A high school education is successful if it helps students cope with the ordinary problems of life in our complex society-earning a living, getting along with their families and extending cultural horizons so that as the years pass, they feel zest and courage, instead of despair.
