-digg can W A ,if ff p N, , f dxf 2 Q, l With our proud heritage as Virginiansga We of McLean High School have many responsibilities. The settlers of Virginia were prompted by a desire to improve themselves and to better conditions for their fellow men. We intend to carry on the traditions set forth by our forefathers and to keep alive their spirit as We enter institutions of higher learning or engage in various voca- tional careers. At McLean We have had the guidance of a highly trained and competent faculty, and the advantages of modern educational facilities Our proximity to the seat of federal and international government has enriched our under- standing of the world we will enter and the problems we will face. 4 We are fortunate in having a student body in which high ideals and moral standards are accepted as a way of thinking and a way of living. We know that the seniors of 1959 will take with them feelings of hope and confidence gained from their years at McLean High School.

With deep appreciation and great pride we dedicate the 1959 Clan to Mr. James Arthur Rich. Mr. Rich is well known to us all, and we will always remember him as the friendly person who has rendered great service to McLean through his determination, effort, and interest. With his help McLean has become a school of which we are all proud. Mr. Rich began his career with little education but Worked hard at night and in the summer to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University, his Master of Science degree from the Albany State Teachers College, and he is now working toward his Doctor of Philosophy- degree. This year will complete Mr. Rich,s forty-first year of work in the field of education. He was employed for many years in the New York State school system before coming to McLean in 1954. His first year at McLean was spent as a teacher of mathematics, and many of us remember well his conscientious effort in this department. The next year Mr. Rich was appointed our Assistant Principal of Instruction and has served in this capacity since that time. Mr. and Mrs. Rich live in Falls Church, Virginia, with their daughter, Margaret, who is a 1959 graduate of George Mason High School. Their son, James, is completing his sophomore year at the Rensselaer Poly- technic Institute. Frances, their older daughter, graduated last year from Syracuse University. This year Mr. Rich was a co-sponsor of our S.C.A. In the past he has been very active in his church and Rotary Club. At the present time he is Secretary-Treasurer of the Fairfax County Secondary School Princi- pals' Association.
