The settlers of Virginia were prompted by a desire to improve themselves and to better conditions for their fellow men. We intend to carry on the traditions set forth by our forefathers and to keep alive their spirit as We enter institutions of higher learning or engage in various voca- tional careers. At McLean We have had the guidance of a highly trained and competent faculty, and the advantages of modern educational facilities Our proximity to the seat of federal and international government has enriched our under- standing of the world we will enter and the problems we will face. 4 We are fortunate in having a student body in which high ideals and moral standards are accepted as a way of thinking and a way of living. We know that the seniors of 1959 will take with them feelings of hope and confidence gained from their years at McLean High School. illll WH? in E5 UL With deep appreciation and great pride we dedicate the 1959 Clan to Mr. James Arthur Rich. Mr. Rich is well known to us all, and we will always remember him as the friendly person who has rendered great service to McLean through his determination, effort, and interest. With his help McLean has become a school of which we are all proud. Mr. Rich began his career with little education but Worked hard at night and in the summer to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University, his Master of Science degree from the Albany State Teachers College, and he is now working toward his Doctor of Philosophy- degree. This year will complete Mr. Rich,s forty-first year of work in the field of education. He was employed for many years in the New York State school system before coming to McLean in 1954. His first year at McLean was spent as a teacher of mathematics, and many of us remember well his conscientious effort in this department. The next year Mr. Rich was appointed our Assistant Principal of Instruction and has served in this capacity since that time. Mr. and Mrs. Rich live in Falls Church, Virginia, with their daughter, Margaret, who is a 1959 graduate of George Mason High School. Their son, James, is completing his sophomore year at the Rensselaer Poly- technic Institute. Frances, their older daughter, graduated last year from Syracuse University. This year Mr. Rich was a co-sponsor of our S.C.A. In the past he has been very active in his church and Rotary Club. At the present time he is Secretary-Treasurer of the Fairfax County Secondary School Princi- pals' Association. Long before McLean High School ever opened its doors, the administration and the faculty met and debated the actual purposes of a high school. Ques- tionnaires were sent out to both students and their parents asking what they expected from their secondary education. New ideas were brought up, dis- cussed and thought over. 'From this a philosophy gradually emerged. Through the years this philosophy has necessarily been altered and broadened to meet the new problems that are constantly arising. Yet the basic aims have re- mained the same. In meeting the educational needs of the area youth the faculty of McLean not only instructs them in appropriate subject matter, but tries to develop in them the highest of moral, social and spiritual standards including love of democracy, personal integrity and human sympathy. McLean provides an organized program assisting students in solving their social and vocational needs by educating each student according to his interests and abilities. McLean tries to offer a wide, flexible curriculum which trans- mits cultural heritage, sharpens the esthetic senses, arouses the intellectual curiosity, developes the creative potential and fosters the physical well-being of each student. The faculty tries to encourage interest in local, state, national and World affairs by providing opportunities for active participation and training in civic life by stimulating a sense of social responsibility. lVlcLean aids in making the Americans of tomorrow meet the demands of the Americans of today and the ideals of the Americans of yesterday. A high school education is successful if it helps students cope with the ordinary problems of life in our complex society-earning a living, getting along with their families and extending cultural horizons so that as the years pass, they feel zest and courage, instead of despair. hmlniglvaiiun 1 I J ll 'nu I u-V90 O 4.4 Wiwf M15 .2 W, M .. BURKS Because of his tremendous ability to undersand the needs of young people and his great capacity of patience, Mr. Burks has made a place for himself in all our hearts-a place that will always be his. To see his kind face, to hear his calm voice, to know that he is doing all he can for you-the knowledge of these things is invaluable to us during this important period in our growth. His leadership and inspirational guidance have brought McLean High School successfully through many difficulties. f Mr. Rich has worked hard as the Assistant Principal of Instruction. His hard work and kind thoughtfulness have added much to our school. He helped the teachers and had a ready ear for students' problems also. His sincere in- terest in everyone meant much to us all. The spirit which Mr. Rich showed for McLean High was felt by all. He was willing to help McLean in any way possible. Mr. Lyons has done a commendable job this year as Assistant Principal of Administration. His industry added much to the cooperation between teach- ers and students. His was a hard role, and everyone appreciates all that he contributed to our school this year. Mr. Lyons showed a personal interest in working out the problems of students and faculty. This meant much to every- one who' came in Contact with him. PM Faculty i E LIZ S. N. ALGER, B.A. Mathematics RACHEL A AMES, B.S. English ALLEN BARROW, JR. Ed.D Social Studies OSCAR E. BAUGHAN, M.S. Guidance Staff McLean High School is extremely fortunate in having such an outstanding guidance staff. They are all dedicated men and women who are not only qualified counselors but also very capable teachers. They guide us, the students, through all our important decisions and help us to grow in maturity. The guidance program at McLean High School is a vital factor in the whole structure of the school. We all owe these guidance counselors a great debt of gratitude for a job well done. MRS. LEIGH Director of Guidance Counselors MISS HOFFMAN, 12th Grade MRS. It has more magazines and cur- rent information than in previous years. The audio- visual section has been expanded, and an effort has been made to make the library a comfortable, homey spot with greenery and flowers scattered throughout. The bulletin boards have attracted special attention and are enjoyed by students, teachers, and visiting parents. NORMA HELEN DEKTOR Librarian xi MBS. M9935 Despite the many problems our cafeteria sys- tem has been confronted with this year, Mrs. Moats and her staff have as usual performed beautifully. Aiming to please every student, they have continually prepared excellent va- rieties of dishes. As any student can tell you, they have given the cafeteria a pleasant atmos- phere, despite the mass of people that eat at each lunch period. Again June arrives, and a class leaves in the solemnity of graduation ceremonies. These seniors were outstanding students who achieved recognition for their leadership, their scholarship, and their service to the school. Through their efforts, tradition has been more firmly established to provide a heritage for the rising classes to follow. In each person's heart there are special souvenirs which will endure always: The excitement of a football game on a crisp day in early fall . . The enchantment of an orchestra's melodies at the first formal dance . . The color of tremendous dramatic productions on the school stage . . The mirth of a hilarious costume ball . . . The spirit of the school-Wide magazine drive . . . The blooming of fresh spring activities after the cold winter . . The sweetness of a tropical evening for the Prom . . . The memories of all the activities shared bind the school into oneness at the end of the year. The activities are the school, the school is the classes, the classes are the students, and the students are the activities. It is a cycle which exists because people are human, and because they are interested in other things and in other people. Like a little world,' the school revolves in an orbit of friendliness, honor, and pride. Tradition has set up high ideals which posterity must keep. 555 I rl 1 4 wi 4KV, Q u an Senior Class As We end our high school career, We look back with fond recollections of our senior year. First touch of foreign language F ,,, A number of students worked for many hours after school to contribute to our organizations at lVlcLean. lnnumerable projects and activities were com- pleted this year. Our clubs and organizations grew larger and added much to the activity here. Every student was given an opportunity to add to our school through the variety of clubs. Worth-while projects were sponsored by the clubs, and these projects aided the school while allowing the students to have fun as they worked and learned together. The clubs offered students a chance to exercise their interests in the intellectual, recreational, and creative fields. This year the Inter-club Council was put into operation by the S.C.A. for the first time. There was one representative to the council from each organization. To foster better cooperation among clubs and to aid new clubs are the chief aims of the council. All of our organizations added to the contribution which lVloLean High School made to the community. I44 Year by year more faculty members and students are beginning to realize the strategic role of the Student Council in the life of a high school. Our Student Cooperative Asso- ciationis activities have been more confined to organizing rather than dealing with coordinating activities and numerous other vital duties which it has assumed since its inception. This yearis administration has accented academic achievement by recognizing students for scholastic effort and for participation in extracurricular activities. A 'cstudy weeki' was conducted this year also. Its purpose was to allow extra time to prepare for exams and to encourage scholastic achievement. A big surprise for this student body was the coming of Arne Sundland, the foreign exchange student from Norway. With the efforts of members of the community under Mrs. David Anderson, and a student committee, a tradition was started which we hope to continue. This year, as in the past, F.B.L.A. is keep- ing the alumni files and sent invitations to the Homecoming Game and Dance to the graduates. Table: Mrs. Lucas, P. Hunnicutt, N. Holt, M. H K: ... 2 K Athletics at McLean mean many things to different people. To those who participate it means hard Work, joy, and despair. To cheerleaders it means practice and a strong voice. To those who are managers it means being the right hand of the coaches and the team. To the coaches athletics are both work and pleasure. But to everyone athletics are a tangible thing which make one proud to be at lVIcLean. For the majority of the student body who will never know the terrible feeling of being responsible for the opponent's score or the hard work involved in being a team member, it is easy to sit back and run the team. The McLean student body doesn't consist of people who sit back and talk but do nothing. It is made of people, many people, Who sell programs, play in the band, belong to Pep and Booster Clubs, and most important come to games and support their teams even when the going is rough. lVlcLean has had rewards for its hard work and support. County football and basketball championships have been ours. The girls' basketball team has had the county's best record for the last three years. Our athletic department is one of which to be proud. viii f vb f 'T T ,-1114 f A, mgmgfw? P- ' W Q V I l ,lvl x , f f X-W' ITMJ? f-Q, gif ,iff x l , 'L ,, ,iii ' iz:-2 ' j 1 J A 1 sr bl J!
