We of the yearbook staff hope each individual finds some of his own dreams of this school in the pages of this yearbook. One first was a football team which, though it didn t win any games, won some- thing more than what could be put on the scoreboard, It was an inner gain of the very first football team and the first call for student unity and school spirit. We all wanted those long standing traditions of other schools and so we drew upa Constitution. For weeks the halls and classrooms resounded with cries of “The election of S.C.A. officers should be unlimited,” “Ohno it shouldn't ...and then... We ought to adopt this Constitution now, No wait and correct it first. Finally we adopted the Constitution. Then came the election of our first Student Council officers with Bob John- son emerging from a din of campaign speeches, posters, and general holiday spirit as our first President of the student body. Along with Bob came Gracie Rosenbaum, Vice Presi- dent; Bonnie Ziegler, Secretary and Corbin Thompson, Treasurer; to lead McLean. With the election of Student Council officers under our belts, the road opened. A newspaper, class elections, basketball games and plays tumbled one after the other in rapid succession, Through all our efforts we felt secure with the knowledgethat Mr, Burks, Mr. Lyons, and our faculty had faith in our ideals and goals. And as we go to press we still are striving for those traditions, It is a job which must go on until our principles and beliefs stand steadfast and strong. CRAIGHILL STONER BURKS Principal B.S., Hampden-Sydney College M.A., George Washington University To those of us who have shared the challenge of establishing the McLean High School as a vibrant, dynamic influence in the life of our community, the 1955-56 school session has been a memorable experience. Thisfirst year has been difficult for we had to build from scratch, and some of us were impatient, butthe results of our efforts are encourag- ing. Our student body has developed from a thousand individuals with diverse loyalities to the closely knit community that is truly the McLean High School. The growth that we have accomplished is a monument tocooperative effort, to cooperationamong pupils, teachers and parents. It has been an inspiration to lead you and it is good to realize that our school is emerging as a vital part of the life of each one of us. se? ene JOSEPH J, LYONS, JR. Assistant Principal A.B., Woodstock College M.A., Georgetown University When in the early days of the policies and the traditions that were to shape the destinies of America and the young Republic of the United States were being formed, the pioneers of this great and glorious nation performed deeds and acts that were nothing short of he- roic and overcame obstacles that would even now be considered almost insurmountable, To these, our predecessors, fell the task of laying the groundwork of the constitution, establishing tradition and confirming by their blood and labor that this was their nation that was to be inherited by us. In like manner, though in a far smaller though not less important way, falls to us, stu- dents, faculty and administration of our McLean High School the onus of weaving to- gether those policies, philosphy, principles and traditions that are to be the bulwark and the foundation of all those characteristics which we want to be representative of McLean High School. This we can do by uniting together in a bond of friendliness, good attitudes and a school spirit which can be summed up in this manner - We believe in our school because we believe in ourselves, we believe in our faculty and administration and we believe in our own student body. Tohave faith in this credo is the message that I give to you and you in turn to the students who follow you. MRS, SIMMONS, MISS McMAHON, MRS, OLSON, MRS, LEIGH, MISS ELLIOTT. Darne, The Concert Band is the top performing instrumental group in McLean High School. It has many responsibilities to fulfill during the year. Its members recieve semiprivate lessons in school and twice a week there are sectional rehearsals, The Cadet Band is the training unit that supplies the Concert Band with members. This band is not a performing group but it does appear twice a year for con- certs as part of the music department. It is open to any students who wish to start on an instrument. The Dance Band is a voluntary organization. It meets once a week to re- hearse, and plays occasionally for the drama department. Eventually they will play for school dances and other activities. Under the excellent guidance and direc- tion of Mr. E. Morton, the Choral Music Department earned for itself a worthy repu- tation. Whether during classes, assemblies or concerts, to those who heard the voices blended in song, came a sense of well-being and happiness. But it was not just their listeners who derived this feeling, for the members of the group themselves, received something much more valuable - admiration of fellow students, faculty members and citi- zens of the school community. MRS, LAJEAN JENSON Dramatics Director Under the excellent direction of Mrs. LaJean Jenson, the Drama Department enjoyed a very successful season. The first play was Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” which was heralded as one of the best high school plays ever seen in this area. Next came Antic Spring, a hilarious one act comedy, presented at two school assemblies, This play will serve as our presentation for the district festival for contest plays. Each individual who has portrayed a character in the plays seems to bring to the stage his own interpretation of the part, therefore, leaving behind the usual triteness of high school plays. For this boon to the McLean stage we are ever indebted to Mrs. Jenson and her wonderful faculties of play direction.
