Coach Al Cano's varsity Highlander basketballers, led by juniors John Loyear and Dick Brainard, won four games and lost eleven to enter into a fifth place tie with the Madera Coyotes in the North Yosemite League standings. The Scotts could have done even better in this their first year in the big team NYL if not for injuries to key players Steve Mazzoni and Brainard. The former played only the first six games of the season before he was side- lined with a leg injury. A leg injury in the middle of the season limited Brainard to only 15 games. High scoring Loyear kept the team together in the scoring department averaging 12.2 points per game. He scored 258 points for an overall total. Brainard was the leading rebounder with 176 grabs in his 15 games. He scored 160 points for an 11.7 point game average. Larry Mai netted 150 points for third rurmerup spot in this department. Of the 12 players on the varsity squad, 9 will be re- turning next year. There were only three seniors on the team. Brainard, a player of honors, was chosen by his team- mates to be their most valuable player, and to be the recipient of the Harry Cohfee blanket award.
