WRE TLI G McLanes, first wrestling team, spearheaded by underclassman, Paul Gillis, finished out the sea- son in line style for a first year team. Though their season's mark C6 wins, 6 lossesj, isn't all im- pressive, the right, sweat, and de- sire behind that mark is some- thing to be proud of. Sophomore Gillis, with an out- standing record of 19 wins and 3 losses, took his teamis top wres- tling honors. He was awarded the outstanding wrestler by his fel- FRONT ROW: Clarence Meredith, Norm Brooks, Dave Gearhart, Sam Bradley, Fred Andrews, Eric Christensen. BACK ROW: Doug Cox, Ron Crain, Bart Sanders, Ron Argall, Ray Christensen, Paul Gillis, Mark La- low teammates and coaches at Joie- the spring awards banquet. Gillis won eleven of his matches by pin- ning his men, the others by de- cision. His losses were also by de- cision Among the many top honors that this first year team copped were: More places than any other team in the Novice Tournament, a fourth place in the North Yosem- ite League Meet, and twelfth in the Central Sectional Meet. They also scored in the Northern California State Meet. Gillis and Mark Lajoie won their respective weight classes in the NYL meet and qualified for the sectional, where the former placed second enabling him to go to state. They wrestled in the 191 and unlimited weight divisions, respectively. Ron Argall and Fred Andrews took a second and third at league while Brooks, Gearhart, Bradley, and Cox won fourth place honors. Coaches Francis and Bondietti will have the nucleus of this year's team back with them next winter. The junior varsity squad amassed a 4 win, 4 loss, 1 tie season's record. Ron Argall, a senior, was elected the captain by his teammates at the conclusion of the season. NYL Meet standings were as follows: Fresno, firstg Madera, secondg Roosevelt, third, McLane, fourth, Chowchilla, Hfthq Bullard, sixth, Merced, seventhg and eighth, El Capitan of Merced. SITTING: Larry Ditto. Joe Brucia, George Ruby, Ron Oaxaca, Dick Simmonds, Dale Evans. Art Bailey, Ron Santigian, Bob Patel. MIDDLE ROW: Coach Bondietti, Barlow Gor- don, Dick Wharton, Ron Moricks. STANDING: Dennis Sfetky, John Hansen, Perry Popovich, Dale Strong, Dennis Pusich, Carlos Cabrera, Cary Schmidt. and Caylardo, CROSS COU TRY lNIcLane's first cross-country team will prob- ably hold precedent over future Highlander harriers. because this team was one of many teams that relayed the XYinter Qlympic Torch on one of its legs in the journey from Norway to Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Games. This is held every four years and it is doubtful that high school runners in and around the Fresno area will be relaying another olympic torch for quite some time. Heading the varsity team as captain was Ray Freeman. He along with Perry Popovich and Roy Malone received awards at the fall awards banquet. Popovich for being the most persever- ing runner, and Malone for being the most in- spirational member of the team. The boys who participated in the carrying of the torch were: Beebe, Sanders, Cunning- ham, Malone, Freeman, McBroom, Cabrera, Coach jack lVilcox had a team full of desire and otential.
