X752 zzugxfmf Mrs. Eugenie De Land Saugstad. bom on historic East Capitol Street in Washington, D. C.. is a native daughter that the capitol city is proud to honor. She has resided almost continuously in the District until a few years ago when she moved to Virginia. During the greater part ol her lite Mrs. Saugstad has been a teacher of art in McKinley High School. and no teacher has worked harder lor nor added more to the prestige ol that school than she. li scenery is needed lor a play, il advertising posters must be secured, if a design for an honor award is wanted, one course oi action is uniformly followed. We'1l ask Mrs. Saugstad. and Mrs. Saugstad never fails. She takes particular interest in the display cases in the main corridor ol the school where by artistic color combinations. cheerful greetings, and memorable pictures she announces the approach of seasons and special holidays. Eighteen years ago Mrs. Saugstad. with the help of her husband. Mr. Olaf Saugstad, designed and made a llag for McKinley's own, the Second Regiment ol the High School Cadets Corps, which was replaced lour years ago by a new flag presented by Mrs. Saugstad. So striking were these flags that she was requested by both Eastern High School and Western High School to make appropriate llags for their respective regiments. Her further accomplishments include an oil painting of the late Louis W. Mattern which hangs in McKinley: the ceiling mural ol the Eastern Star Temple on New Hampshire Avenue: a memorial window in the Presby- terian church ol Riverdale. Maryland: a memorial decoration in Foundry Methodist Church: a copy ol the portrait ol Count de Grasse which hangs in the French Embassy in Washington: a picture ol George Wythe for the Supreme Court Building in Richmond, Virginia: a smaller copy ot the portrait ol George Wythe lor the lohn Marshall High School in Richmond: and the por- trait oi Mrs. Kate Waller Barrett ol Barrett Hall on the campus of William and Mary College. During World War I Mrs. Saugstad received several national honors for her Liberty Bond posters, because MRS. EUGENIE DE LAND SAUGSTAD ol which she had bestowed upon her by Mr. Isaac Gans the same District of Columbia medal which was bestowed upon soldiers. a distinction which marked her as the outstanding woman of the District of Columbia. During this World War II she has already had several ment. One ol these has been made into a post card lor popular use. Mrs. Saugstad is one ol the elect to whom live talents were given.
