Within, the long corri- dors are patterned with shadows. Like the sun dial these shadows measure Tech's days into signifi- cance for those passing through these corridors, pausing, casting shadows ot their own, then gone at the ringing of a bell. ln the lives of her students Tech's influ- ence will be a sun by whose light each will come to cast a greater shadow on the world. uso Tech's Windows dre ornoimentdl ond purpose- ful. Although you see them rarely, except in assem- blies, they stand ready as counsellors and guides Whenever you need them. WILLIAM C. MYERS MR MYERS was held in the highest esteem, by all who knew him, as a gentleman, an efficient admin- istrator, and as an earnest teacher. His kindly and sympathetic nature, his keen intellect, and his straightforward manliness won him the respect and affection of pupils and teachers alike. Mr. Myers will always be remembered as a gentle, thoughtful man with a fine philosophy of education. F. C. Daniel. o 0 1 1 HARRIS cmd EWING LOUIS W. MATTERN MR. LOUIS W. MATTERN, better known to Tech students as Uncle Louie, has passed from Tech's portals for the last time. He was a friend to every- one, and he was liked as Well in return. He was a keen observer of human nature, and his lectures on Chemistry were full of human understanding. They are presided over by the outstanding members of our faculty. The Athletic Department, which has gained much fame and honor for Tech, offers many varieties of sports, the most popular being football and track. Mathematics, an important high school subject, is taught in many phases from Algebra to Analytics, Mathematics being an essential subject for college entrance. The department which has the largest number of teachers is the English Department. English is required of everyone who wishes to graduate. The courses are divided into two: the College English course for those who wish to enter college, and the Practical English course for those who wish it only as a credit toward graduation. - For the students who enjoy reading, the History Department offers interesting courses of study, including World Problems, an advanced subject. The Science Departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Biology offer courses designed to stir the curiosity and lead to further investigation. The musical and artistic students can devote their time during high school improving their talents and enjoying themselves at the same time. For college-going students, Latin, Spanish, and French are taught. These subjects, cultural rather than practical, are a real addition to any student's education. The Commercial is the most rapidly growing department at Tech. There are never enough typewriters to meet the demand of students seeking admission to the typing classes. Instruction in all kinds of business machines is a part of the work of ad- vanced classes. On graduation Tech's students can secure work in various fields of the commercial world. The Practical Arts Departments are the most numerous at Tech, providing larger and more extensive courses in Home Economics for girls and Shop and other technical subjects for boys. It was because of these subjects that McKinley was given the name of Tech. E. I also MISS L. P. BAILEY English MR. B. T. ANDERSON Printing MR. I. W. ADAMS Physics MISS MR. C. A. BLUME Language B. Hereafter we will be only visitors. T'ech's doors admitted us three years ago to prepare for the future. We have enjoyed those years of suc- cesses-a few failures, but always cheerfully over- come. As these same doors close behind us we look for- ward to greater tasks, bigger accomplishments. We are now men and women, having our own places in the world. You may see many of us in the offices and stores downtown in the daytime, but at night you will prob- ably find us in some nearby university or business school, always hoping to rise higher in our chosen fields. lust as our elders were, we will be. Being leaders in government and politics, and many other tasks, we will continue from the point where they stopped. The rest of us will toil all day for several years more, having even higher ambitions and more time than our classmates. Where will our hard-worked- for high school diplomas be then? The boys have theirs in the bottom of a trunk, and the girls' are in chests with sachet. They no longer mean what they used to. Then we will be taking three-hour final exams for our college diplomas. Our class rings will give way to college rings-like the di- plomas. Will we have gained in wisdom as well as knowl- edge? 029: W 1 X Q A ii ,,,L, A Q A R x 'li ' 8 , f , vga J 4 s 1 Y . f YP 511- A . wr, kxmfiu- - ilif, :e N ,t'I'ivx.4 Z ' X 'PI-Q P' W M 3 JS X QA ,f as K ip ' fl 'QQ W , . The girls are taught to play basketball, tennis, volley ball, ping pong, shuffle board and baseball. Girls of all semesters may participate in these activi- ties after school in the girls' gymnasium. In gym classes the girls are shown many exercises by which they may improve their posture and build strong bodies. No girl leaves Tech without profiting by these hours in the gym. Frank Numbers, an alumnus, honored us by singing Holy Night. Phyllis Gustafson played 1-Xdeste Fidelis, on the violin with Mr. Nicodemus accompanying her at the organ. The assembly ended with each section carrying a gaily decorated basket onto the stage. When all the baskets were grouped under the Christmas tree prizes were pre- sented for the best. Thompson Adviser 166 CGD ESE HME 'ft' This year Tech has been fortunate in having so capable and willing a mili- tary committee. Showing a genuine interest in our organizations and acti- vities, they are like the shadow of our cadets, always there to lend a helping hand and give the push needed to get them over the wall. Miss Hart, as chairman, has done or great deal of appreciated work. Our thanks likewise are due Mr. Wondrack, Mr. Richardson, Mr. Schutte, Mr. Kreh- biel, Mr. Walten Cfor his willing assist- ance in the bandb, and our own mili- tary instructor, Mr. Benner. Encouraged by these gracious guides with the supervision of Lieutenant-Col- onel Sidney Clark and the splendid cooperation of Lieutenant Charles Wel- ler and Lieutenant Earl Davis, the Mc- Kinley cadet corps has again pioneered with the publication of the first regi- mental paper in Washington, the Tekadet. This paper has proved to be a very successful medium for the diffusion of knowledge and amuse- ment among the cadets. With such splendid direction and a will to win, Tech will surely play a victorious role. MILITARY COMIVIITTEE Lieutenant Benner, military instruc- tor of the Second Regiment, has long been of aid to Tech's cadets. The Sec- ond Regiment cadets have four compe- titions besides the War Games with the other Washington schools every year, the Battalion, the Regimental, the Com- pany and the Band. ln these Mr. Ben- ner has always given his fullest cooperation. I-le is respected by offi- cer and private alike who look to him for aid in all their military endeavors. lf luck is lacking, hard work and en- thusiasm never are. Mr. Benner knew how to inspire the boys to stick at their drilling until long after sunset many Monday and Thursday afternoons of l936 and l937. ff ff 'f- - Tk!-:J l:.:5.-34-:.':-:'.::?f.... After regaining their confidence the Maroon Men took a l3-O lacing at the hands of Episcopal High. With new effort the Techmen set back the Gonzaga gridders by a score of 31-6. Entering the Inter-High series as a question mark team, Tech beat Western by a small margin of 7-O. Central, Tech's bitterest rival and the favored champion, fell before a per- sistent onslaught to the tune of 6-U. Having practically clinched the title, Tech fought a U-O tie with the Eastern Blues. Tech concluded a successful season and gained the cham- pionship by easily beating Roosevelt's Rough Riders, l4-O. Tech's team was not a collection of brilliant stars, but eleven gallant boys Who played together, sacrificing personal glory for team honor, and they symbolize Tech sportsmanship.
