Of course, we were mere rookies,,' but just to be a rookie,' at Tech was a privilege and distinction. The big moment was the arrival of the football season in all its glory, and our introduction to the famous Hap', Hardell in a pep assembly on October 18. It was great to be sitting in Tech's stands and watching our heroes win five straight games in order to bring the championship to McKinley. And when we say our heroes, we mean just that, for Goss, Benner, Spencer, Nelson, and several others were tin gods lavishly worshiped within the portals of Tech that year. Although it may seem rather greedy, nevertheless Tech carried off the basketball championship, and the school went crazy with joy at obtaining two championships in one year. The semester ended with twenty especially blessed members of our class making the honor roll. The first thing of importance to occur at the begin- ning of our second semester at Tech was a school-wide G. O. election, by which Kenelm Herschel was elected to look out for the welfare of our class. On june the second and third came the big thrill for the cadets, who per- formed in their first competitive drill at Griffith Stadium, and following close afterward a select group of seven received a bigger thrill when, in an assembly for that purpose, they were awarded medals for being the best, second best, or third best inexperienced privates. Another activity of the school which attracted our attention about this time was baseball. Tech started out rather slowly in WW 3356. ' 7 M 'f'r' li . ll A fs. f ,lj 'f r K L r 5,1 . 0xfifIi.iipg,. N, tilt oats A gl A QANQED... fmt L1 this sport, being defeated by the two strong teams of Eastern and Western, but the finish was brilliant with victories made over Business and Central. After spring track events, we came to the end of our first year with seventeen of us on the honor roll. SOPHOMORES Whoopee! We were no longer rookies, but had taken on an ounce of dignity and become sophomores. The first thing of importance to occur in this, our second year at Tech, was the football season, and, needless to say, Tech again won the cham- pionship, thus creating five heroes in the persons of Reichman, Sachs, Nelson, Gormley, and Kolker. It was about this time, too, that we began to take notice of all the activities open to Techites, and many a club had its membership increased by us. There were also more of us this year, for throngs came in from junior high schools and helped to make an exceptionally large class. When our fourth semester began, honors came to the girls, for about twelve received Diamond T's.,' The favorite noontime sport was dancing in the gym, where the boys stood around and shifted their weight from one foot to the other in contemplation, while the girls danced. This year's tournament play, Sire de MdlFfT0if,S Door, proved to be a very good production, but we were still unable to gain first place. At the end of the baseball season, Karl Nau was awarded a Circle T, the first of our class to be so honored. Edward Scott, a member of the class, led this June's honor roll, and there were forty-six others whose reports totaled anywhere from twelve to twenty-one points. JUNIORS In the middle of September, 1931, we were all glad to get back to the teachers who give home work on the first day just to start you off right. To add to our delight, we realized we would no longer be stuck in odd corners of the auditorium, for at last we had reached that goal of becoming Tech upper classmen. In assemblies we listened to Hap with his usual pessimism concerning the football season and his famous quotation, Anything can happen in high school footballf' However, Tech managed, despite these direful predictions, to capture its fourth straight championship. The close of the semester now rolled around, and after a week of torture, during which we took semester tests, thirty-four members of the class made the honor roll. Early in February the Pharos took in a number of new members, and we were much honored when Alice Scott, George Bon Durant, and Howard Blaisdell were selected from the sixth semester class. In the G. O. elections Lucile Profe was our victorious candi- date for representative, and Doris Helm was chosen secretary of the organization. Our class was represented in the cast of the school's operatic production by Treva Cameron and Saverio Pisciotta. It was with much reluctance that we were forced to see Eastern take the championship from Tech in the play off in basketball, though Wheeler and Russell did some mighty fine playing in this series. The rest of the year showed one achievement after another by members of our class, which incidentally had organized and was planning a dance. The first honor was the winning of the tournament plays with the production of A Night ul an Inn. The time for the Oratorical Contest then arrived, and we were justly proud in having George Bon Durant attain second place among all the contestants from Maryland, Vir- ginia, and the District of Columbia. When the Pharos again went in search of new members, eight of us were chosen, and we were quite gratified to find that forty of our class had made the honor roll at the end of the semester. SENIORS With our heads high in the clouds we returned to school one September morning to take possession, for we were now SENIORS! The cadets were Hrst to realize their station, and gold braid glittered on all our officers. A goodly number of Hap's first team were likewise members of our class, and did we cheer those heroes who brought the Hfth straight championship to Tech! QYou just can't beat those McKinley High boys at footballq It now came time to elect seventh semester class oHicers H ' and we honored the following: Max Brinkman, President, . Rapid progress of the team is due to the untiring efforts of the boys who have spent four years in building up a representation worthy of Tech. The loss of Captain E. L. Though all were not full, the vacancies were sufhciently filled with the entrance of the February recruits. Through governmental orders, the Army officers, serving as military instructors for the high school cadets, were removed, and full responsibility for the Tech corps devolved upon Mr. French, chairman of the military committee and faculty military instructor. XVith the cooperation of the otlicers and untiring efforts of fvlr. French, the disadvantage suffered by the lack of an Army oilicer, as a military instructor, has in a large measure been overcome. The most notable event of the year was the participation in the Inaugural Parade in two mass formations, one commanded by the Lieutenant Colonel, and the other by Major Evans. Tech won the first inter-high competitive event of the year, when, in the inspections among the various high schools, Company E, commanded by Captain William Wilson, was selected to HCI as guard of honor at the presentation of commissions at the Annual Competitive Drill. ln the series of war games, eight contests were necessary to complete the elimination by which Company A, commanded by Captain Robert McRae, was declared the winner. In the second inter-high event of the year Company A competed with a representative company from each high school in the brigade finals at Franklin School. and triumphed to gain first place. Further honors came to Tech in competition at the Central Stadium, with all high schools represented. The Battalion Drill was won by the First Battalion, led by Major Evans. Techis Band, headed by Captain Krumke, won the band competition. W'e look with hope to the remaining contests to reward the work done throughout the year. -LT. Cox.. JAMES B. EDMUNDS. This year a slight change in the club pin was made by the introduction of a pearl guard. A football team was organized and a good showing was maintained throughout the year. The annual closed dance was held in February and constituted the most important social function of the year. The club formerly was supervised by the Army officer acting as military instructor, but since his withdrawal Mr. de Berriz has consented to act as adviser. Foley, M. Apperti FOOTBALL AT THE end of the 1932 football season the accomplished Tech team found itself again the seas0n,s champions. This made the fifth consecutive year that the team had been strong enough to defeat local school squads of equal strength. The squad, under the leadership of their captain, Allison Meiklejohn, and the splendid coaching of Hap Hardell, started practising on Labor Day, 1932, and by the end of November had a record of no games lost, no ties, eight wins, and only once scored against. TECH, 7-EASTERN, 0 The team proved its superiority to Eastern in the opening game of the inter-high series. The downfall of the light blue team started when a strategic play went wrong for them. When it was Tech's ball, Max Brinkman shot a brilliant forward pass to Meiklejohn, which he caught on the three-yard line, falling over for the touchdown. Gormley kicked the point. Both teams showed a marvelous defense throughout the game. In the last quarter Tech showed a great offensive, Apperti splitting the Eastern line for many yards. TECH, 14-WESTERN, 6 A lighting Western team, in the first half of the game, covered themselves with glory by stopping Tech's attack, and bringing to bear a crushing, bucking offense. Because of fumbles and mixed signals, a Western man recovered on Tech,s five-yard line, and with several line bucks, their team pushed the ball over the line. The second half brought the Tech team out, fighting for their fifth consecutive championship. Heatwole, playing his first inter-high game, crashed through for a touchdown, and with the goal kicked by Gormley, Tech was ahead. Late in the last quarter a series of rushes by Foley, Apperti, and Pisani, netted Tech its second and last touchdown of the game. TECH, l3LCENTRAL, 0 The Tech-Central game was a very active one. Tech received the opening kick-off, and marched down the field to the Blue's eight-yard stripe, where a fumble gave the ball to Central, who promptly punted back. Another drive with a Brinkman-to-Meiklejohn RIDEOUT pass for the climax gave Tech its initial score. At the beginning of the second half, Central, on an attempted forward pass, fumbled, and Tech recovered. A cross-field pass brought the ball to Central's two-yard line, and on successive bucks, Gormley scored the second touchdown. The stars of the game for Tech were Apperti, Howser, Meiklejohn, Gormley, Foley, Brinkman, and Pisani. Most of the men on the team were seasoned players. The majority of them, however, are seniors, leaving it up to future aspirants to continue their fine record. UI-Tap will have to handle this year's team alone, because Artie Wondrack, who had formerly aided him, has been sent to Eastern. Because of this, spring practice was held. It is the sincere desire of this class that Tech's football traditions will be carried on in the future. SCORES Tech Balto. City Tech Western College Tech Central Tech Episcopal Tech Swavely Tech Handley Tech Charlottes- Tech Eastern ville BASKETBALL BECAUSE Tech failed to carry away first honors in the inter-high series does not neces- sarily mean that Tech did not have a first-rate team. Most of the games were very hotly contested, and were lost only by a small margin, with the exception of the alumni game. Much to the school's regret, the team succumbed twice to the traditional rival, Central. However, the team broke the records of past years by capturing twenty-one contests and losing eight. Knocky Thomas, the best guard in the series, was chosen all-high for this position. The captain of the Tech team was Waverley Wheeler, and the manager, Harry Ehrlich. A few of the outstanding players were Daly, Olverson, Gillem, Nau, Billings, and Reichardt. SCORES Tech Western Tech Western Tech Central Tech Central Tech Eastern Tech Eastern Tech Roosevelt Tech Roosevelt TRACK THE 1932 track squad did not make such a formidable show in the inter-high compe- tition, but it did better in the other meets in which it participated. It is the good fortune of Tech to train Hne athletes for future careers. Two of these are Jake Edwards and Al Reichman. Edwards ran second on a mile relay team which broke the world's record, Reichman broke a record for the 440-yard indoor run at the Southern Conference. The stars on the present squad are Gormley, Esunas, Lank, Hartman, and Smith. Coach Hardell has been trying to get the younger men from the lower semesters to participate in track. Among the events are the sprint, hurdle, high jump, broad jump, javelin throw, discus throw, shot put, pole vault, and relays. Meets in which Tech has competed are the CH Club Meet, the Inter-High Meet, the Maryland Meet, the Penn Relays, C. U. Meet, and Meadowbrook. 1932 SCORES MARYLAND MEET INTER-HIGH MEET Tech ...,...,,... 53 X2 Central ,.,,,..... The team started early in March with five veterans as a nucleus, Vernstein, Turner, Nau, Wheeler, and Thomas. Though only these five regulars returned, nearly the whole second team was back to bolster the regular team. This year Mr. Foxley started a new system by putting every candidate who was in the first four semesters on a separate team, coached by Baxter Davis, a former player. If this plan succeeds, Tech will be supplied every year with experienced men. Twelve hard games were scheduled by Coach Foxley, many of which were out of town. This was necessitated by the bad condition of the Tech Held. The incentive for hard work this year was the magnificent trophy offered by Clark Griihth for the winners in the high school series. 1932 SCORES Tech 5 Eastern 6 Tech 3 W'estern 4 Tech 0 Central 13 Tech 7 Business 12 ALBIpIi'I'1X CARR GWIQNIIOLYN IIDDY DoRIs IWIFLAI SENIOR GIRLS' BASKETBALL MEMBERS IYIARJORII.
