While we do not claim to be the best class ever to leave the school, Q we feel that our classmates have done their part toward placing the name Tech high in the history of the Washington High Schools. When our class entered in September, 1927, we were known as rookies, a name familiar to all. VVe were starting a new adventure, and with that Tech Spirit in our blood, we set to work with a determination to follow in the foot- steps of the former Techites. The members began at once to take part in the various activities. Our sophomore year, to a great extent, resembled our freshman year, but we were better fitted to work, and our members were becoming better known in their numerous activities. ln the sixth semester we organized, elected class officers, and began to plan for the future of our class. We were well represented in practically every line of endeavor. Among these are the G. O., both boys' and girls' athletics, and the various school clubs and cadets. Now, as Seniors, our greatest triumphs have been gained. We have com- pleted our own tasks with a will, and the progress of Tech has been marked by the leadership of Seniors. The following class officers have been elected for our last semester at Tech: Carl Estabrook, President 5 jack Kemper, Vice-Presidentg Martha Baker, Secretary, Samuel Lank, Treasurer, and Oliver McDorman, Sergeant-at-Arms. The officers of the class have also been members of the Senior Court. The Senior Service Committee is made up of members of our class. The eight line captains are members of the june class. Publishing the Tech Life and the TECHITE are two other tasks for which seniors are responsible. Some of the outstanding events in which members of our class have partici- pated in the last two semesters are: a Seventh Semester Dance, held at the National- Press Club, and attended by a large part of the class, a Scholastic Pub- lication Convention in Lexington, Va., attended by Doran Platt and Schuyler Donnella of the TECHITEI staff, and another in New York attended by Gordon Horsnellg Captain Applejackf' in which the leads were played by Eugene Castle and Amy Veerhoffg and the G. O. elections, in which Harry Sembekos was elected President and Sid Kolker eighth semester representative. Among the other things which may be credited to the June Class are the number of students who made the Pharos and the Honor Roll. About forty-five were on each of these. Rowland Kirks won the Oratorical Contest at Tech this year. The leads of the spring play, Iolanthe, were held by Joe Yznaga, Thelma Nielsen, Frank Daniel, Edward Brown, and Gynnette Willis. The athletes in our class are almost too numerous to mention. It is sufficient to say that most of the members of the championship football team of last fall are in our class. A large number of the boys on the track and baseball teams are also graduating in june. Class H1StOfy influence of Tech, which it has experienced for the last four years. i F ' ' 26 ROBIQRT ,l. .XL'Hli'l'li'1'TER A FH.-XRLO'l l'E Llili ALLNUTT I-'irst in the tight and every graceful She was ever fair and never proud. deed. Class of February, 1932 Q1 FEBRUARY 27 we entered Tech at the old building f to enter as rookies in the old school We completed ou1 NPT I f h th b ld Q ,J res man year in e new ui mg As sophomores, we began to assert ourselves in the life of the school. From among our ranks voices were already beginning to be heard in various organizations about school. Then we became juniors. The thrill of being an upper classman and the importance of our new class organization caused many to forget that there could be something higher. We are now in the seventh semester, Seniors, with but one short semester between us and graduation. Among us are the great and the small, the strong and the weak, but the whole class is of such texture that its memory will linger long in the halls of Tech. The president of the class is Paul Oehmann, who is also promi- nent in school athletics. In our class also are several boys who have made enviable records on the football team, and a large number of our boys are on the track team. Tech's dramatic activities have also been well represented by members of the February graduating class. Twelve of them have been elected to the Pharos, among whom are Paul Oehmann, Henry Lepper, Jeanne West, Beatrice Kendall, Wilbur Robb, and Marie Preston. There were thirty-four students from this class on the honor roll last semester. Some of these who had high ratings were Leonard King, Paul Oehmann, Wilfred Page, John Robb, and Dorothy Weber. The e1ub's purpose is to better the Second Regiment by keeping it at a high level and to maintain co-operation among the officers. The club is a medium of exchange for ideas which will help in the improvement of the regiment. In their meetings the members discuss all problems which relate to the welfare ol their companies, such as transportation to and from the extended order area and methods for raising money for the activities of the club. ln order to meet this last situation they gave a dance in the Tech Gym on January 9, 1931, which was highly successful in a financial and social way. Although Colonel Maish has been very ill and unable to instruct the boys, they have en- deavored to maintain the highly beneficial service for which they have always been noted. Mr. French, who was in charge of the Regiment during the Colonel's absence, has done a great deal in assisting the officers. 104 5-Achevrons The Chevrons Club of McKinley High School was started in 1929, by a small number ot' fadet uon-coins. Under the tutorship of Colonel Maish and the President ol' the Sabre Club it progressed rapidly. William Schuyler was its First president. The club was open to all non-coms, and dues were fixed at a quarter a month. A constitution was drawn up and voted on by members of the club. The Chex'rons has been a brother to the Saber Club, helping it in all of its dances and other social activities. The 1931 club has been limited to sergeants of the companies and staffs. 'l'ne club is taking rapid steps toward success under the leadership of the present president, Klason llart, who is assisted by Frank Allwine, vice-presidentg George E. The property room is full of various objects, all made at different times for some play. The lvoys acquire a very practical knowledge of stagecraft by their work here at Tech. At the showing ot' lolanthe, the stage crew gave a very interesting demonstration ot their work between the acts. 1lU I I Girlsi Stage Crew The Girls' Stage Crew was organized hy Mrs. Ola llay Rush, Head of Home liconomics Department. This organization is an outgrowth of the Home Economics Department, and is composed of a group of girls who have given voltintarily, much of their time after school in order to help with all productions given hy the school. This organization applied to the G. O. for a charter early in March, and has been recognized hy the whole school. No new memliers are allowed to join unless charter mem- lwers resign or graduate, then the Faculty Adviser and otlieers of the organization select those who will take their places. The girls design and make all costumes needed for productions, and are studying the art of eostuming. Satisfactory and meritorious work may he rewarded hy a credit toward graduation. The girls were very husy during the first part of the semester making costumes for the operetta, Iolanthe. 111 . H1- Y President .... .... The principle purposes of this club are to advance the interests of the Business I'ractice Department of the school and of the individual students taking part in the activities of the club, and to make it possible for each member to gain a First-hand under- standing of business through field trips and inside programs. Nlembership in the Commercial Club is open to all pupils who are taking, or who have taken one or more subjects in the Business Practice Department. Business meetings are held on the first VVedncsday, and Field trips are taken on the third XX'ednesday of each month. During the past winter the club has visited a number of well organized otiices in the city, including the Fox Theatre, The Capitol, Senate, and House OH'ice Buildings, and the Chevy Chase Dairy. Plans are being made to visit the VVhite House, NVar Department, and Treasury Department during the month of April. This victory was a much needed stimulant to the spirit of the regiment. Each company is striving to do its best and overcome the greatodds over us. Tech had only two battalions, five companies, four years ago. Now it has three battalions of three companies each. This shows that during the past three years the Cadets have not been idle in securing new recruits. Due to the illness of Colonel Maish, the regiment has encountered serious ditliculties this year. However, the oflicers have co-operated to the utmost, and the regiment has not suffered to any great extent. The War Game Team of Company C won the final War Game Series at Franklin School, on March 10, 1931. This team won at Tech only after a very close game with the team of Company A. The captain of the team was Second Lieutenant Hugh Chapman. The otiicers and men of the Second Regiment are deeply grateful to Lieu- tenant-Colsfvnel Craigie for the aid rendered by him in the absence of Colonel Maish, , The S cond Regiment as a whole has worked hard the entire year and has hopes of p acing when the final drill comes around. -LIEUTENANT-COLONEL THOMAS E. Turn to the next one and you'll find more memories F Baslcetlaall The past season for thc Tech llackethall Team was a hard luck season. liastern, which is in haskethall to Tech as Central is in foothall, tied with Central for first place lweeause of a technical error. This error, the ineligibility of a Maroon and Gray player, deprived Tech of a lirst place tie with Eastern and placed Tech in third place. However, the team cooperated very well and played real haskethall all through the series. That Tech Spirit, which has more than once made a Tech team champions, kept the hoys in there until the last lmlast of the whistle. The team was rarely beaten hy more than at few points. This year's team was marked hy the steady playing of captain Ev Russel at forward and Artie VVillison at guard. These players were elected for the first and second All High teams respectively. Practically all of this year's regulars will he retained next season, so Artie Boyd, the tutor of lmaskethall should expect an all-star aggregation to develop under .his coaching. We hope next season will witness the comeback of Tech into the Championship class. SCORES Tech Fastern Tech .... .... 2 6 Central Tech Vklestern Tech Business Tech Eastern Tech Central Tech Western Tech Business Track Track, the sport for which Tech was justly famous in past years, is a competition which demands individual ahility rather than teamwork. Tech was long considered a sure winner in this hranch of school athletics, hut with the graduation of the last of the '29 team. it seemed that track at Tech had suttered a serious decline, This year, however, a return to the old spirit has heen evident. More than one hundred hoys turned out for spring training and under Hap's coaching, they have developed into an array of stars who will have undoubtedly proved their worth hefore this hook is issued. The reason for the decline of Tech's teams on the cinder path has heen due, no douht, to the hesitation ot' the lower classmen to go out for them. They should rememher that although they may not get a Cl12il1CC to do their hit at first, they will have to carry Tech's colors next year and the training they get this year will he of great value to them then. l Q , +1 - aselmall lfrum zllmnt sixty cancliclatvs who tnrncrl out when thc first call was issncrl for playa-rs, Xlr. liclwarmls has clcvclppcrl a tvani which has lm-cn carrying our colors in thc- championship strngglc.
