The plosterer and the machlmst strlve for smoothness of the fmlshecl product The arm of the plastenng course IS to provlde rntellugent and thoroughly schooled apprentuces to a newly revnta llzed plasterlng lndustry The need for fnreproof constructnon rn schools and homes IS becomrng Increasingly ev: dent rn vnew of the many dlsastrous fures In recent years un varuous local: tles and the plasterung helps greatly rn satusfyung thus need The plasterlng trade has made great strndes In the past few years with the untroductlon of lnghtwelght materlals These make the plasterer s work much easier Wnth the llghtwenght materrals we can put up a lighter stronger and a more fnreproof wall that as cheaper than ever before and vlrtually crack proof The materlals we use most un thus shop are Gypsollte moldung plas ter and Ilme The former IS used for the basecoat whsle molding plaster and lrme are used for the fmnsh coat After many years Mr Massve has retured as plasterung Instructor and hrs successor now us Mr John McCarthy Another change rn the department ns that the nught school apprentices have come back to McKmley after a two Top Mrtermg a cornuce Runnnng a cornrce mold on a dome Celllng Bottom Applyung cast ornament to a fireplace years absence Mr McCarthy and hrs assocuate Mr Bates Vuce President of the Plasterers Local No 9 teach these nrght school apprentnces The plasterung shop ns dlvrded unto two sectlons The back room has en closures wherem the upperclassmen practuce the varrous phases of the plas ternng trade The front room IS used for practice un wall work A few of the decoratuons and deslgns made are frreplaces arches domes and other artostlc creatuons of the plasterer s craft 14 . . . . . , . . . . . . Both the brlcklayer and the machnmst work to the square Thus Year nn the bncklaymg shop under the expert supervuslon of Mr Grundon the enture class has done re markably well The Sensor class has completed a combmatnon outdoor pa tuo wuth provnsnons for a barbecue The patio has an 8 concrete block wall runnmg along each slde and a I6 foot foreplace along the back Thus closes off three sides guvung the benefut of prrvacy The enture fnreplace wuth nts two storage buns IS made of red wnre Top Bulldlng a stack bond panel Bottom An outdoor barbecue patlo an the maklng Erectung a Flermsh bond wall cut bruck To fnnlsh off the proyect the patio has a flagstone floor and a curcular flower box The Junnors were engaged In buuld :ng panels to gave them the experience of workmg wlth color schemes and bruck patterns One of the panels they built was a stacked bond employing ten dvfferent colors and textures An other attractuve panel was one havung a basket weave lnterlor with an out sude trlm of celo crete blocks guvung at a very good color scheme Chumney constructlon was another aspect of brlcklayung that the Juniors had work ed on The Sophomores just beginning theur study of the trade have con structed smaller and slmpler labs such as 8 Inch l2 unch and l6 Inch cor ners and plers Thus gave them experl ence and enabled them to get accus tomed to the terms of the trade They experts In learnung bonds Equally am portant they learned to appreclate the Importance of their every motlon I cddltlon they have learned the portance and use of the plumb rule nn a trade where constant attention must be pand to keeplng the work properly alngned ' f I - 1 .
