Elmer Clabeau THE PATTERNMAKER A patternmaker is an industrial worker who makes models from Wood, plaster, or wax, which may be molded into specially prepared sand or other materials into which molten metal and other materials in liquid state may be poured, which, when cooled or set, form castings to be used industrially. Samples of these uses are: for parts of en- gines, automobiles, machines, etc. The pat- ternmaker works with a large variety of hand tools, and also with machines, includ' ing the lathe, band saw, circular saw, joiner, etc. There is a wide range of types of pat- terns and pattern work, such as solid pat- terns, split patterns, shell patterns, sweep and skeleton patterns. Sample products from these types of patterns are: split patterns Qiron dumb bellsjg shell patterns Qsteam or hot water radiatotsjg sweep patterns flarge pipe or large kettlejg skeleton pattern fmedium size cast iron pipes ranging from 12 to 1s J. P There are two types of pattern shops'- the jobbing shop, where patterns are made for other firms, and the industrial shop con- nected with a manufacturing plants Industry is dependent upon the pattern- maker for the many castings of various types which make possible the assembly of modern machinery.
