We trust that We have helped you in many ways -in acquiring desirable information, developing useful skills, forming Wholesome attitudes, building good habits. But above all we trust that We have helped you de- velop a set of values that are not altogether materialistic. Unless you believe that sharing is the keynote of happi- ness, that duties and responsibilities must be met, that honesty with ourselves and others is absolutely essential, that iaith in man and God is the only sure foundation for a good lite, we have fallen far short of our duty to you, and may God have mercy on you and us. You have our heartiest good Wishes tor your continued growth. Most sincerely yours, N. B. DEE, Principal. M4- Our .f455i5fanf ,Qincilaa A For he's honorable And doubling thot, most fair. SARAH A. Thot is why we seniors ore especially dnxious to dcknowledge here our grotefulness to the stdft of McKinley High School tor their helpfulness in guiding us through four iinportont yeors ot our youth. 7 ,., eniord lt is difficult to find words to show my appreciation for what McKinley has done for me not only in my last term as president of the senior class of Iune 1953, but also during my four years as a student. I know that our class will never be forgotten for all the con- tributions its members have made in sports, academic achieve- ment, the arts, inter-school activities, and general school spirit. When we leave these memorable halls and go out to the dif- ferent crossroads of life, we shall always remember the hours that we have spent here. Who could forget the good times in the corridors, the lunchroom, and the narrow stairways? Or the institution where we spent four of the best years of our life? Let me speak for the rest of the senior class to thank Mr. Dee, Mr. Weld, Miss Connor, our sponsor, Mrs. Clarkson, and the faculty for what they did in helping to better mold our lives. At one time or another they have helped us when We needed help the most. In graduating, may each one of us always remember that we couldn't have spent four better years than those at McKinley. -loe Stone. jg. 4-' , ,M 3 ,ii . 3 - 7 ' 4 .-41? Ukio Jychoggica .fdcfiuifiea Loyalty to any school can be shown in this Way-participa- tion by the students in school activities. Out-of-class activities can determine the love of the pupils for their school. The lead- ers as well as the followers in life are often discovered in a simple thing such as a school club or organization. The best times a student will ever have and the most helpful education in life will be learned in these organizations. Here is one place where the character of a student is built. For it is in these groups that a student's real personality is revealed. To Work together and cooperate with people is one of the best les- sons leamed, and if it is learned well it will make a firm founda- tion and success in business. As We look back in later years, the fondest memories of our school days will be those which linger on from extra-curricular activities. The good times spent there will remain long after the English and history lessons conned in class. The words of our school song remind us that LOYALTY is a part of McKinley: As We journey down life's path our hearts will ever turn to you. Qusfffsjn R' B U s H Each year at McKinley we hold the Coronation of our Queen. lt means to us what Mardi Gras means to New Orleans-what the Royal Coronation means to the British. lnto our everyday school chores it brings some pomp and glory, a little mystery, and a lot of excitement. Every McKinley girl dreams of being queen and each year the Goldbug carries on our fine tradi- tion of making one of these girls' dreams come true. At that eventful time one night last November, the lights were lowered, the room was filled with suspense as the most beautiful Coronation ever witnessed at Mc- Kinley began. When the girls came down the aisle on to the stage and took their places, we were reminded of a beautiful rainbow the way the girls were arranged with their lovely dresses blending perfectly. As the moment for the little girl to bow to the new queen approached the suspense mounted. Then, just as our new queen t Sherry Bush was crowned Queen of Love and Beauty, a burst of wild applause rose from the audience. To the strains of the Recessional the queen and her lovely maidens departed from the auditorium to attend the ball. Thus another Coronation was added to the history of McKinley. 6337, First Row: Phyllis Groves, Lila Sanders, Dolores Ward, Doris Corey, Nina Groves. The students gain great benefit in announcing, interviewing, public speaking, as Well as directing. Audio-visual service was founded in an endeavor to enrich classroom experience. ln 1904 plans of our first audio-visual school service took form in a small institution housed in one room and a school corridor that began by loaning collections from the St. Louis World's Fair. Silent motion picture films became part of the school-loan service in 1917, sound films in 1938. Class- room radio became an integral part of teaching with the establishrnent in 1950 of KSLH, the public school FM station. Recognized as the third largest field of endeavor in the United States, retailing and merchandising offers the high school grad- uate an opportunity to attain the proper social and financial balance neces- sary to success. Students enrolled in Distributive Education are able to receive business training preparatory to store operation or management, gain selling techniques, and obtain merchandise information. Students may enter the DE program in the 7th term and continue through the 8th term, earning a total of four credits. Each semester one credit may be earned for class work and one credit for successful part-time experience. Problems in retail merchandising are presented during the class period, and in the afternoon and evening each student has a chance to secure practical experience in a retail or wholesale organization where he works a minimum of 15 hours per week. For this work he receives the same wages as other new employees in comparable jobs. Mr. Layne works with the merchants in setting up a training schedule for each student in an effort to individualize instruction so that the knowledge learned in school is directly related to the part-time job. Retailing offers high school graduates many opportunities for developing and using their talents. Wherever these talents may lie-in the selling of goods, services, and ideas: in the selecting and purchasing of merchandise: in the training and supervising of retail employees: in the dramatizing of merchandise through words, pictures, or displays: in the recording and inter- preting of statisticsg or in some other skilled activity--retailing provides un- limited possibilities for interesting and profitable careers. This club is composed of McKinley girls who are especially interested in pro- moting school spirit and good sportsmanship. They attend all the interscho- lastic games, sell tickets for these activities, and support all McKinley doings in general. Besides this, the girls of the Squad enjoy good fellowship at their meet- ings. Some life-long friendships have been made in this manner. They work joyously together in preparing a party for our Championship Teams. Every now and then they engage in friendly rivalry seeing how many Goldbug buttons they can sell. Come up to 314 at any meetingegeneral or specialeand you will see fifty or more girls living up to the meaning of those letters P-E-P. T544 , ' ' f r Wg NQJOJ U if M Sanrio Sports--what does it mean? A group of boys playing to- gether as a team, sportsmanship, school spirit, the will to win, a lot of hustle, confidence,-in fact, everything leads up to the word sports. In our student body and faculty you will find school spirit. For if there was no school spirit, we surely wouldn't have had the football team, basketball team, and baseball team that we had in the past year. A group of boys playing together as cr team-what does it mean? ln athletics there is no athlete who is the whole team. lf that line man misses throwing that block, then the backfield man would be tackled, but with a perfect block he runs over the goal line for the touchdown. There is no one individual who is the team, but everybody working together makes the team. The athletic program here at McKinley teaches the boys how to co-operate with one another in a sportsmanship manner. The sportsmanship which the boys receive from playing athletics here at McKinley will help to make them better men in this busi- ness World of ours. ln our McKinley boys we will always find that will to win and that hustle that lasts until the whistle is blown. In no player will you find a lack of confidence to win. IR . nv The most popular page in autumn sports is football. No game demands more teamwork, strength, courage, and altertness, or provides a more thrilling spectacle. lt is played by teams representing cities, playgrounds, and industrial organizations. It is the chief sport in most high schools and colleges. But its many players are but a handful in comparison with its spectators. The boys playing on the B-Team will eventually go to make up our Varsity Team. Considering the good showing that they did this year, we certainly should have one ot the best football teams next year. Hickey, our superintendent. With so much to be learned by so many in so short a time we can be proud that our mothers have banded themselves together to extend a helping hand wherever they tind an opportunity. They bring the home a little nearer to the school. They take pleasure in our pleasure, have joy in our success, and express sympathy in our misfortune. We are reminded ot Longtellovtfs verses: How beautiful is youth! How bright it gleams, With its illusions, aspirations, dreams!
